Lifestyle | A lot has Changed

November 20, 2019 by Whitney

A lot has changed since my last post. The biggest and most noticeable change? I’m pregnant! That’s right. Darrius and I are expecting our sweet bundle of joy in April 2020. God has been so good to us and we are incredibly grateful for this blessing. We decided to share the news via social media on the date of our 10-year dating anniversary, October 18th. So, of course, I had to spread the word here too!

Because I plan to document (some) of this journey on the blog, I asked my Instagram followers if they had any pregnancy related questions. I took the most asked questions and decided to post a brief “Pregnancy Q&A”. I also shared some of my beginning and current thoughts about being pregnant. Read more below!

pregnancy announcement

PREGNANCY Q&A

1. What was your reaction when you found out? I was in shock, only because 2 weeks ago the test I took was negative. I remember looking at the test, shaking my head, laughing hysterically, then crying hysterically. I Facetimed Darrius and of course, service was bad on his end. I could see him but he couldn’t see me. Ha! I was crying and shouting, “Babe, I’m pregnant!” He too was in shock, and just started laughing. Once I sent him a picture of the pregnancy test, He just texted back, “Wow.” Once I got myself together, a wave of emotions came over me – happiness, nervousness, fear, and if I’m honest, disappointment. Although Darrius and I are very grown and we know what it takes to make a baby, we weren’t “officially” trying nor did we feel “ready”. Our plan was to start trying in December 2019. Obviously, God had other plans. And now, several months later, I’m finally at peace with that.

2. Who did you tell first? My husband, of course. Then my younger sister, Taylor. I told her a few days after I took the test and she was elated! She kept it a secret until Darrius and I told my parents, a few days later.

3. Did you have morning sickness? Yes. While I never threw up, thank God, I felt nauseous just about ever day (most of the day) during my 1st trimester and the early part of my 2nd trimester. I also experienced carsickness during the end of my 1st trimester.

4. Do you have any names picked out? We do! We’ve gone back and forth, but we’ve narrowed it down to one girl and one boy name.

5. What has surprised you so far about pregnancy? The symptoms. Yes, I knew I’d experience pregnancy symptoms. But never did I imagine which ones and how intense. From the extreme exhaustion to the sore tailbone to the excruciating nipple pain, I was NOT prepared! Thankfully, naps, certain prenatal yoga poses, and nipple cream has made those symptoms more bearable.

THE BEGINNING | Weeks 8-17

In the beginning, being pregnant was awful. I felt like crap, I barley ate, I was extremely exhausted and on the verge of tears 24-7. I was also a nervous wreck because around 8 weeks, I was put on pelvic bed-rest for a week due to overdoing it at work. I was terrified. My faith was definitely tested and it wavered quite a bit. I remember praying, daily, that everything would be OK. Thankfully, it was. The baby’s heart-rate went from 109 to 164 by our next appointment.

While I was extremely grateful to get over that hump, the symptoms (still) proceeded to kick my butt. Let’s just say weeks 9-12 were just flat out rough. There were a lot of tears during those weeks, but I trudged through. Looking back, I know it was nothing but God that got me through. I remember telling my Mom that I just didn’t enjoy being pregnant. I felt guilty about admitting that because saying it out loud made me feel ungrateful. My mother reassured me that it was OK to feel that way. She even let me know that a lot of women feel the same way.

It’s OK to be grateful and to feel depleted and defeated at the same time. You’re human.

Click To Tweet

As I continued to pray and eventually journal my way through the first trimester, I began to realize that just because I don’t like being pregnant doesn’t mean I’m not grateful for the blessing. I’m eternally grateful that God chose me to carry life and it’s something I don’t take for granted, at all. I just needed to be reminded that one,  I’m allowed to feel human emotions and two, carrying a baby ain’t easy. It’s mentally, physically, emotionally and sometimes spiritually draining.

Smiling at 17 Weeks

CURRENTLY | 18 Weeks

Now that I’m almost 19 weeks and almost halfway through, I’m settling into my pregnancy. My second trimester has presented a new set of symptoms, but I’m taking it all in stride. I’m moving my body more, (finally) getting somewhat better sleep, and I’m in the process of tweaking my morning and afternoon routines. I’m also becoming more aware of when I need to take a break, ask for help, eat, say no, etc. The one thing I’m most excited about is feeling more connected to the baby. I talk to the baby all the time, I sing to the baby in the morning, and we even listen to music together, thanks to the pregnancy headphones I ordered from Amazon.

As the holiday season quickly approaches, Darrius and I have decided to focus on getting our home organized and baby ready. Our home office will eventually become the baby’s room, so we have a few minor projects lined up. Going from a family of 2 to a family of 3 excites us both, and I’m just really looking forward to be on this journey with him. I’m also grateful for my family and close friends who’ve kept me sane during this transitional period. It’s a lot to embrace, but I’m doing my best to take each day as it comes while reaming grateful through it all.

Let the journey to parenthood begin…

Personal Style | Wearing Printed Bottoms

March 21, 2019 by Whitney 13 Comments

Leopard print is a bold, fun, and fearless print. It’s also a timeless print, and some, including myself, consider it a “neutral color”. Wearing leopard print makes me feel confident and, of course, fashion-forward. As I’ve shared before, my confidence took a slight hit when I cut my hair. Since then, I’ve been paying close attention to how clothes and certain prints make me feel. It’s important to me now more than ever to wear clothes that make me feel confident.

Wearing Printed Bottoms

To be honest, when I first saw these pants hanging on the rack at Lane Bryant, I was unsure how they’d look on my body. As much as I love wearing prints, sometimes I shy away from wearing them on the bottom. Nevertheless, I grabbed this pair and whisked off to the dressing room, silently praying these pants would look and make me feel A M A Z I N G. Prayer, answered.

Wearing prints on the bottom can be tricky, regardless of your size. Something I keep in when wearing printed bottoms is to wear tops that cover my bottom, or tops that are mid-thigh length. Such tops can include:

    • Tunics
    • Long/mid-length cardigans (worn over a tank top, cami, bodysuit, or fitted t-shirt)
    • Over-size sweaters (this works best with leggings or straight-leg pants)

I also suggest, if at all possible, trying on printed bottoms before you purchase them. If you’re really feeling bold, create different looks while in the dressing room. This will give you a better idea of how you can style your printed pants for future outfits.

Personal Style | Casually Styling Platform Converse Sneakers

March 18, 2019 by Whitney 7 Comments

Converse is my favorite sneaker brand. Their sneakers are always comfortable, stylish, and affordable. They seemingly last for a lifetime, so the cost per wear is never an issue. For years, these classic sneakers have been a wardrobe staple. The platform pair worn here have quickly become one of my go-to pair for everyday outfits.

When styling an everyday outfit, or any outfit for that matter, I keep the following in mind:

  1. Comfortability
    • The fabrics must be soft and breathable
    • I shouldn’t have to constantly rearrange my clothes throughout the day
  2. Functionality
    • I should be able to walk, bend, stand, etc. in the outfit
    • My movements shouldn’t be restricted due to my outfit choice
  3. Personal Style
    • The outfit must be true to my personal style
    • I have to feel good about myself when wearing the outfit

Lifestyle | Building Confidence & Wearing Leopard Print Pants

March 5, 2019 by Whitney 7 Comments

For the past few months, I’ve been working on building confidence in certain areas of my life. I’ve added different colors, textures, and brands to my wardrobe, become more vocal about topics I’m passionate about and I’ve said “YES” to certain opportunities I’d normally say no to. There’s less second-guessing, and very little discussion with outside people before I make a decision.

Related Post: Leopard Print & Faux Leather

I also find myself less timid when asked to try something new. As a result, I’m genuinely more happy, less stressed, and more content than I’ve been in a while. I’m learning to trust my gut, have faith in my capabilities, and most importantly, I’m learning to trust and recognize the voice of God.

“Confidence is an inside job: it’s about how you feel about yourself regardless of what anyone else does or thinks. It’s a knowing that you’re human, you’re flawed, and you’re awesome in your own way.” ~ Jen Sincero

Building Confidence - Leopard Print Outfit

Building confidence isn’t easy. In my case, I believe wholeheartedly that cutting my hair was the catalyst for my confidence boost. While not an easy one to make, that decision changed the trajectory of my life. Months prior, I was stuck in a rut. My wardrobe was boring me, I was extremely indecisive about the simplest things, and I compared my life to (some of) my peers more times than I’d like to admit. So, when I found out I had Alopecia, I decided to cut my hair not only track my regrowth but also as a way to revive some things that had been lying dormant in my life.

The quickest way to acquire self-confidence is to do exactly what you are afraid to do. ~ Anon

After the cut, things started falling into place in the most seamless way. It was and still is, uncanny. The way my faith is set up, I know that’s nothing but God working. Cutting off my hair, AKA my security blanket, literally catapulted me outside of my comfort zone. Sink or swim, like it or not, my new normal was happening with or without me.

By the grace of God and some cute items I’ve added to my closet, I’m becoming the most confident version of myself. Do I still get stuck in my own head? Absolutely. Do I get scared sometimes and revert back to what’s comfortable? For sure! However, I make it a point not to stay in those places too long.

Over time, our relationship grew into a beautiful friendship. I’ve watched and supported Tiona’s growing business, Proverbs 31 Boss, and I couldn’t be more proud of her success. Personal Style | Leopard Print + Faux Leather

February 26, 2019 by Whitney 6 Comments

At the beginning of the year, I knew I wanted to continue refreshing my wardrobe. I started this process a few months back. First, I figured out what items were missing from my closet. Next, I gathered personal style inspiration; finally, little by little, I started shopping around for certain pieces.

Related Post: Wardrobe Refresh

I knew I wanted to add color, (more) prints, and different textures to my wardrobe. That said, purchasing these leopard print pants were a no brainer! I tried them on in the fitting room of Lane Bryant and immediately fell in love! I was more than pleased with the fit and length, and the slightly fringed hem made this pair of denim even more appealing.

Turbans and hats were also on my shopping list. Both are the perfect accessory for just about any outfit and, because I’m not 100% comfortable with wearing my semi-bald head out in public just yet, stocking up was a must. So, I purchased two handmade turbans from Emijaa Jaaemil during the holiday season: a black faux leather and a multicolored leopard print one. Wearing these turbans not only makes me feel comfortable in public, but it adds an effortlessly stylish touch to my outfits.
