#WNJInspired | The Importance of a Solid Starting 5

October 7, 2015 by Whitney 11 Comments

I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying, “you become like the 5 people you hang out with most – choose carefully.” This is actually one of my favorite sayings and one I’ve been taking rather seriously these days. I’m a firm believer in having a close, tight-knit group of people you can depend on, bounce ideas off of, and learn from. I call these people in my life my starting 5.

Let’s think about basketball for a minute. The starting 5 consists of the following players – (1) Point Guard, (2) Shooting Guard, (3) Small Forward, (4) Power Forward, and (5) Center. Without these key players, there would be no foundation and to be honest, there would be no game. So in the “game” of life, having a solid lineup is essential to your growth and success.

Having a Solid Starting 5

Success means different things to everyone. For me, success is living a purpose-driven life, while making a living inspiring women to be stylish, influential and fearless. Therefore I need motivating, honest, and direct people around me. I need those people who push me when I want to give up, those who are honest (and tactful) in helping me tweak or even change some of my ideas, and those who aren’t afraid to tell me when I’m in over my head or that I may need to set more realistic goals.

In the game of life, having a solid starting 5 is imperative for your growth. #wnjinspired

What you need from your starting 5 may be different, but having honest and motivating people on your team are traits that should be consistent. Whatever your definition of success, you cannot be truly successful (and happy) if those around you are negative, draining and unmotivated. It just won’t work. Think about the 5 people you spend most of your time with; are they helping you get to where you want to be? Also, are you helping them reach their goals?

Having a Solid Starting 5

So tell me, do you have a solid starting 5? Are you playing on the right team? Let me know your thoughts!

As always thanks for reading and commenting. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Great post, Whitney! My starting line-up is God, the Holy Spirit, Christ, my intuition, and my husband. As I moved into my true calling, the friends I thought I had are no where to be found. Crazy how folks want to keep you at level that’s comfortable for them.

Thank you, Glenda! I LOVE YOUR lineup! AMEN! And you said something that hit home; “…folks want to keep you at a level that’s comfortable for them…” WHEW! Thanks for sharing that. I’ll be sitting with that for a while. Needed to hear that. 😉

Very interesting way of looking at success and team building. I don’t believe I have a solid 5, but it does have me thinking of those I had in the past and I would say while in college I definitely had a network of 5 or more that spurned me forward and believe me it works.

Thanks, Rachel. I’ve been learning how to form a solid team this year. It’s a process, but I think it’s necessary for sure.
