Personal Style | Wearing All Black + Taking a Moment to Slow Down

June 15, 2016 by Whitney 11 Comments

During the summertime I’m constantly on the go. I’m actually preparing for a few trips in July and August as we speak. However, before travel season kicks off, I’ve decided to take the next few weeks to slow down a bit. Weather it’s a walk in the park, scheduling an extra massage or facial or dining lakefront for date night with hubs, I want to take some time to enjoy the weather and scenery here in Columbia (Maryland). That’s exactly what I did the evening I wore this outfit. Hubs and I headed to the Lakefront in Columbia after dinner to eat some ice cream, walk around and of course, snap outfit pics.

Plus Size All Black Outfit

I decided, for the 200th time this year, to wear an all black outfit. I added my faux leather leggings due to the cooler than usual temperatures that night. Not only did I look cute, but I was also cozy and covered up. I’m also glad I wore these leggings because those mosquitoes by the lake are no joke!

If you wear a lot of all black, be sure to keep your accessories bold & exciting! #wnjstyle

You’re probably thinking, “you’re wearing all black again, Whitney?!” Well, yes…and why not? As mentioned in this post, I often gravitate to all black outfits, especially during this season where I’m building my minimal wardrobe. I always keep in mind that as long as my accessories are on point, wearing all black outfits can be exciting!

Be sure to add your latest outfit to this week’s linkup – I can’t wait to see what you’re wearing! By the way, don’t forget to keep up with me over on Snapchat. #WNJSocial | 7 Must Have Apps for Bloggers and Entrepreneurs

December 24, 2015 by Whitney 20 Comments

As mentioned in this post, being a blogger and entrepreneur keeps me on the go most days. I absolutely love what I do and as of this year, I fully understand what it means to be an entrepreneur and an intentional blogger. I’ve also learned which apps help to make navigating through the world of entrepreneurship and blogging a bit easier. Below are the 7 Must Have Apps for Bloggers and Entrepreneurs, according to little ‘ole me.

Apps for Bloggers and Entrepreneurs

1. PayPal | As an entrepreneur and blogger there are several times a month I hear the PayPal chirp go off. That means I’ve gotten paid for a sponsored post, from a social media client, or that I’ve gotten paid for an item sold on eBay. I can also accept payments on the go by using my PayPal card reader. This app, and the reader, are definite must haves for all entrepreneurs out there!

2. Mint | This is a great app to help track your spending. I like to know what I’m spending the most money on and how much I have left in my account at the end of the day/week. The app sends alerts when you’ve reach a “low balance” and tracks pretty much all your purchases, made from your linked bank card & accounts. Very helpful!

3. Mailchimp | Although you cannot create a newsletter using this app, it’s a wonderful tool to track your newsletter openings, clicks, new subscribers and unsubscribers. I send out 2 newsletters a week (WNJ & #FearlessWomanIam), so I find this app very helpful.

4. Evernote | I use this app to record my daily to do lists for my 9-5, as well as for my personal business needs. Thanks to Mattie, my mentor in my head and play cousin, I use Evernote daily. I’m very thankful she introduced me to this app and created an easy to follow “how to use Evernote” post on her blog. It has helped keep my day to day activities in one place and it also allows me to send my to-do lists to someone else (i.e. an assistant, intern, co-worker, boss, etc.) With the app, you can also create separate lists and notes and even add images and links to each list.

5. Buffer | This is how I schedule all of my tweets for @whitneynicjames. Each week I plug in and schedule certain posts I want to share via Twitter, including the images and links. Once added, I don’t have to think about it anymore. I know the tweet will be published at the right time and I can even check the stats of a particular tweet.

Try a few of these apps to enhance your blog and business in the New Year! #wnjsocial

6. WordSwag | I share at least 4 or 5 inspirational quotes or scriptures weekly via Instagram as part of my brand. Because I’ve created a certain “look” for my Instagram feed, I like everything to look a certain way, even quotes. I use this app to create the quote image and it’s so simple. The different fonts, backgrounds and sizes help make each image different or the same, whatever your preference.

7. Rituals | As an entrepreneur and blogger it can be difficult to find a few moments to yourself. When I do get a moment of downtime, I like to either read, take a nap, listen to music, or meditate. The Rituals app is great for training your mind to meditate throughout the day. I usually use the app early in the morning when I wake or when I get home from work. I’ve even used it during my lunch-breaks. The app guides you through different types meditations for 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. The app also shows short videos (and descriptions) of different yoga techniques. This really is the perfect app to have on deck when you need just a few moments to regroup and refocus.

So tell me, do you use any of these Must Have Apps for Bloggers & Entrepreneurs? What’s your favorite app? Let me know!

I hope you’ve found this post helpful. Let me know if you’ve tried any of these apps and also let me know which apps help you find helpful as an entrepreneur and blogger. As always, thanks for reading! Have a happy and joyous Christmas and until next time, be blessed and stay safe.

Personal Style | Minimal Styling with an Asos Kimono

September 14, 2016 by Whitney 12 Comments

When it comes to personal style, I’m all about no-fuss, yet chic, outfits. Throwing my braids in a bun, wearing a pair of leggings, a kimono and a pair of big hoops is “my thing”. It’s the kind of look that’s perfect for someone trying to achieve a minimal sense of style. You maybe looking at this outfit and thinking, “is she wearing another kimono?!”  I’m guilty. But this time it’s a kimono from the men’s section. That counts for something, right?

So, how did I end up shopping in the men’s section? After seeing fellow Lifestyle Blogger Sam – AKA my kindred spirit – style a black and white men’s kimono, I had to know where I could find it! I frantically searched the ASOS website, found it in the men’s section, yet fell in love with the simplicity and versatility of the kimono worn in this post. I knew that I’d get more wear out of a solid kimono, so I opted to purchase this one instead.

Ladies, don’t be afraid to shop in the men’s section for certain wardrobe items! #wnjstyle

The material of the kimono is heavy enough to be worn throughout the fall and versatile enough to be styled multiple times. It can easily be styled over a casual dress, a tank top, or a light weight t-shirt as shown in this look. This minimal style purchase is certainly one I do not regret.

Style | Summer Style Recap, Part I

August 31, 2015 by Whitney 32 Comments

Tomorrow is September 1st. Just typing that feels weird. I mean my goodness; the summer has come and gone like that! I do love the fall season, so I’m not complaining. However, Summer 2015 has been quite a memorable one and I’m a little sad to see it coming to a close. But I’m sure September, and the fall season, have plenty of greatness in store! Before we sashay into a new month, let’s take a look at my summer style recap.

Summer Style

Shift Dress & Sunnies // Floral Tunic & Backpacks

I mentioned that I was all about being casual and chic this summer, so I gravitated towards black and white, tunic dresses and jumpsuits (one-pieces). I also play with accessories and hair; always fun to do! I knew this summer was going to be busy, so I styled lost of pants, leggings and practical shoes.  From pageants to road-trips, comfort was my #1 priority.

My summer style was casual and chic; lots of tunics, leggings and shift dresses! #wnjstyle

Always a fan of statement necklaces, I tried to style as many different ones as possible. I mean after all they sit on my dresser begging to be worn, so why not?! My summer style also included backpacks. I’m so glad I gave this trend a try because I honestly LOVE wearing them. Yes, they’re on trend and super cute, but also functional and practical for trips, weekend errands and even casual days at the office.

Personal Style | Elements of a Cohesive Personal Style

August 3, 2015 by Whitney 33 Comments

I had a lot of fun with my personal style in July! From the curly hair to the several prints and patterns I wore, I found myself excited everyday to get up and dressed in the mornings. I also had fun styling different accessories and lengths, like the short black and white tunic dress. Personal style in July was definitely fun and a bit experimental for me, so check out 4 of my favorite outfits!

Personal Style

Comfy Travel Style // Thrifted Tunic

As I’ve said several times before, my goal is to have a #CasualSummer. I think I’ve been on the right track when it comes to being casual and chic in my personal style choices. The clothes I’ve been purchasing and styling have 3 things in common:

1. Comfortability

2. Wearability

3. Versatility

Style should be comfortable because you’re going to wear these clothes all day, everyday. Being comfortable and able to move in any garment is key. Wearability is also important because you want to purchase clothes that you’re able to wear often. If the material is a soft cotton and has some stretch, we’re good! Versatile clothing is the last piece to the puzzle. I’ve preached this message several times, but I’m passionate about stressing the importance of versatile clothing to women shoppers. My rule of thumb is if you can wear a garment at least 3 times, it’s a smart and versatile purchase.

Personal Style in July

Black & White Tunic // Nordstrom Rack Kimono

There have been several bloggers who’ve linked up and I’m so grateful for your participation! 2 ladies in particular have really caught my eye throughout the month of July. These ladies below definitely embrace the 3 elements (mentioned above) of a cohesive and stylish personal style.

Cheryl of Oh to be a Muse has been one of my favorite style bloggers for such a long time. She too has a good handle on personal style and what clothing works for her lifestyle and body type. I love it! Lastly, Monica of GlamVolution has her personal style down to a science. She dresses with such ease and clarity and her outfits are always inspiring. I love her boho chic and feminine style.

Personal Style | How to Wear a Tunic Dress

July 27, 2015 by Whitney 41 Comments

Let’s get into today’s outfit! This black and white tunic dress was hidden in my closet in a Nordstrom Rack bag, with a few other goodies. After digging through the bag and realizing how amazing the items were, I knew I HAD to wear them ASAP. I mean, who doesn’t love a good tunic dress during the summertime?

Black and White - tunic Dress

Tunic Dress - Nordstrom

Tunic Dress: West Kei, Nordstrom Rack (Sold Out // ANOTHER OPTION)

Nude Heels - Kenneth Cole

For my taste, this outfit is a little on the sexy side because of the length. But it’s still appropriate and hubby gave me the seal of approval so I figured, it was a go! The tunic dress is the perfect outfit for an evening event like a wedding, business cocktail function, a possible blogger event, date night, and the list goes on. While it does reveal my legs more than I’m used to, I feel GREAT in the dress; very confident. I actually love my legs and I’m beginning to enjoy showing them off every now and then – this tunic dress allows me to do just that.

Whatever you wear, be sure to feel confident. #wnjstyle

Bloomingdales - Kenneth Cole Heels

Heels: Kenneth Cole, Bloomingdales (Same) // Crystal Bracelet: Charming Charlie

The heels, an early gift from my grandma, are the perfect heel height which makes them very comfortable. The nude-grey color can be paired with several outfits, so these heels are definitely an item I’ll be rotating. I’m all about investing in versatile pieces like nude color heels, accessories and certain clothing items. Your wardrobe should be fashion forward and stylish, but also versatile and  practical. If you can’t wear an item at least 3 times (or 3 seasons), be really sure that you want  make the investment.

Your wardrobe should be stylish, versatile and practicle. #wnjstyle

Style | Styling a Vintage Dress + a Style Linkup

April 27, 2015 by Whitney 39 Comments

It’s been while since I’ve purchased a vintage dress, but there was something about this black and white floral number that caught my eye. At first glance, I thought it was more of a moo-moo than a dress. I still think that actually, lol. I mean let’s be honest, styling a vintage dress can be tough. Nonetheless I threw it in the cart, determined to make it work.

When I got it home, I tried on the dress (again) and wasn’t all that impressed to be honest. But I figured adding a pair of heels and a statement jewelry piece would make this moo moo fly! I like patterns, especially floral and animal print, bt I’m not one to style an item like this. The dress has a lot going on, but that’s what’s fun about fashion. You can make pieces fun by adding your own personal touches  here and there.

Hiring a seasmstress to recreate certain wardrobe itmes is a must! #wnjstyle

I decided to wear this outfit to dinner with hubby one night. It was fun to wear, I was comfortable in it, and he thought I looked lovely. Works for me! However the next time I style this piece I’ll probably add a belt. This will give the dress a different shape. I’m also toying with the idea of making the dress into a top/tunic. Of course I’d take it to my seamstress. A trusty seamstress is a must for recreating pieces like this!
