Quick and Easy Summer Snack Ideas

July 20, 2020 by Whitney 2 Comments

I’ve always been a snacker. I love a good crunch and I’m also partial to the taste of something sweet and savory. So, while I’m working from home it’s imperative that I have some tasty food to snack on.

Although I still love a good chip and candy moment, I’ve moved away from making those my go-to snack choices. As I continue to refresh my healthy habits, I’ve been more conscious of what snacks I eat. If you’re looking for a few quick and easy summer snack ideas, below are three of my favorites:

Fruit Salad

I eat some version of a fruit salad at least once a day. If you follow me on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve seen me share one on Instastories. While I mostly eat my fruit salad without any toppings, sometimes I add honey or Cool Whip. Both toppings give the not so sweet fruit a boost and the already sweet fruit an extra kick.

Mini Charcuterie Board

I probably eat some form of a mini charcuterie board at least 3 times a week. To keep it interesting, I try to change up the variations here and there. However, the two ingredients that are always on my board are cheese slices and olives. Everything else is negotiable. Even when I’m the only one eating it, I make sure my charcuterie board is neat and pretty. The way you present food, even to yourself, is important.

Quick and Easy Summer Snack Ideas

Mediterranean Salad

I’ve only recently started making this salad on my own. I used to purchase Mediterranean Salads from the grocery store pretty often, so it’s been nice to save a little money. Prepping this snack ahead of time helps “making” it super easy. Below are the ingredients I use:

  • Cucumbers
  • Feta Cheese (sometimes)
  • Tomatoes
  • Olives
  • Olive Oil
  • Himalayan Salt
  • Pepper

Summer Reading List: 5 Books to Read this Summer

July 16, 2020 by Whitney Leave a Comment

Books to Read this Summer

Reading has always been one of my favorite past times. In the past, I’ve opted to listen to books using Audible. While I do love audiobooks, it’s sometimes difficult to comprehend or even remember what I’ve read. So these days, I’m making an effort to physically read more books.

When I read, I like to highlight, take notes, and refer back to certain sections. You can’t really do (all) that with audiobooks. And while I haven’t read as many books this year as I planned to, I’m making time to read and finish a few books this season.

Here are five books I plan to read this summer:

1. The Origins of Others, Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison is one of America’s most beloved and most notable Black female authors. According to a few reviews I’ve read online, The Origins of Others is essentially six lectures given by Morrison at Harvard University in 2016. She touches on race, fear, belonging, and an array of other topics in relation to literature.

2. No Disrespect, Sista Souljah

From the first time I read the line, “I came busting into the world during one of New York’s worst snowstorms, so my mother named me Winter”, I’ve been a fan of Sista Souljah. Her remarkable first novel, The Coldest Winter Ever, was a staple for every young black girl’s bookshelf. No Disrespect, published in 1994, is also said to be remarkable and riveting in its own way. Each chapter is devoted to someone who made a difference in her life and also gives a real-life look at how Black people are being treated in America. Although this book was written 20+ years ago, I’m almost certain the lessons and experiences she recounts are eerily relevant today.

3. The End of Me, Kyle Idleman

I started reading The End of Me thinking it was a normal chapter book, but it’s much more than that. Idleman brilliantly weaves Bible stories and scripture into each chapter to show how we must come to the end of ourselves in order to experience the full life Jesus has to offer.

4. Woman of Color, Latonya Yvette

Woman of Color explores motherhood, sisterhood, beauty, style, loss, and resilience from the author’s perspective. After thumbing through the pages, I can already tell this six-chapter book, part memoir, part lifestyle guide, will be a refreshing, intriguing, and heartfelt read.

5. More Myself, Alicia Keys

Since elementary school, I’ve been fascinated with autobiographies. So reading More Myself, part autobiography, part narrative documentary, has been a treat. Keys is a great storyteller. On the one hand, her life seems very normal. Then you start reading about her experiences working in the music industry and you see that her “normal life” is also extremely compelling.

The Perfect Summer Playlist: Black Girl Magic Edition

July 9, 2020 by Whitney Leave a Comment

Black Girl Magic Summer Playlist

While scrolling Twitter the other day, I came across the link to Gabrielle Union’s “Black Girl Magic” Playlist on Spotify. Of course, I clicked the link almost instantly. The playlist was on point, just as I suspected. I mean any playlist that includes Mary J. Blige and Brandy is already on point.

After listening to the playlist, of course, I was inspired to create my own. My playlist, the “Summertime Fine: Black Girl Magic Edition”, includes 40 songs. From Janet Jackson to Chloe x Halle, this playlist is guaranteed to be on heavy rotation all summer long. It’s one of those playlists where you won’t be tempted to skip a song. Just select the shuffle feature and let it play.

As I’ve shared many times before, music is my solace, a safe place. I also believe that music can be healing. With so much turmoil and misfortune happening in our country right now, it’s safe to say that we can all use some healing. So, I’m confident this summer playlist will ignite joy, happiness, and a bit of nostalgia for all of us.

Enjoy!

The “Summertime Fine: Black Girl Magic” playlist is the perfect soundtrack for the summer!

Personal Style | How to Casually Style a Sleeveless Vest this Summer

July 11, 2017 by Whitney 19 Comments

One of my favorite items in my closet is this black sleeveless vest. Whenever I wear it I feel chic, on trend and well put together. Like my collection of kimonos, a having at least one sleeveless black vest in your wardrobe is a must. This kind of vest is a timeless garment that can be dressed up or down. It can also be styled year-round.

On this particular day, I styled the vest with one of my go-to summer tops, as well as my favorite pair of jeans. Becuase I was headed out for a day date with hubs, I decided to wear a red lip. A nice pop of color on the lips is the easiest way to kick a basic outfit up a few notches. Adding an armful of bangles or beaded bracelets is also another way to amp up a basic outfit. So, I pulled out my beautiful Kambaba Jasper bracelet, c/o Joseph Nogucci, and layered it with a pair of bronze beaded bracelets I’ve had for years.

Every wardrobe needs at least 1 sleeveless black vest. It’s a timeless and classic piece. #wnjstyle

Hubs was happy that I finally decided to style my latest pair of platform flats. He picked them out for me a while back and I’m so glad he did. I LOVE them! I’m telling you, platform flats and oxfords have become “my thing” this season. As I mentioned previously, I don’t wear heels that often. However, I like to have a little height every now and then. Opting for a pair of shoes with a slight platform is a nice compromise.

Personal Style | How to Incorporate Prints Into Your Summer Wardrobe

June 13, 2017 by Whitney 6 Comments

With temperatures reaching above 90 degrees, for 3 days straight, it looks like summer is making it’s way to the East Coast. I’m not a huge fan of scorching temperatures unless I’m on a beach or near a pool, but I’m trying my best to prepare for the approaching season by adding some summer pieces to my wardrobe. As I mentioned in this post, I’m still shopping while in between sizes. This goes for my clothes and shoes so it’s a little frustrating at times, but I’m making it work.

Over the weekend I decided to pull out my favorite pair of pants. I was skeptical about how they’d fit; after all, it’s been more than 2 years since I’ve worn them. Once I figured out they fit, it was on! I paired the flowy pants with one of my new sleeveless tops and threw on the most comfortable pair of sandals, EVER. My black Birkenstocks. Can I just tell you that I’ve been dying to have a pair of these sandals? For years I couldn’t fit shoes/sandals with straps of any kind; even if they were adjustable. They just weren’t comfortable. Fast forward 2 years and I’m down a 1/2 shoe size and I no longer suffer from swollen feet and ankles! #WontHeDoIt

Pardon my excitement… Let’s get back to the outfit, shall we? Pairing 2 loose-fitting clothing items can sometimes make you look heavier than you are. However, if your top has a flattering hemline like the one here, it works. Also if you’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate prints into your summer wardrobe, start with a pair of pants like this and add a solid top. Simple enough, right?

Personal Style | Melissa McCarthy Floral Tunic and Denim

November 28, 2016 by Whitney 23 Comments

At the beginning of the season, I decided to browse the Nordstrom Rack website for some new tops to add to my fall/winter wardrobe. Knowing that I’d probably find a lot of spring and summer items on sale, that’s where I looked first. After only browsing for a few minutes, I spotted this vibrant Melissa McCarthy floral tunic. I didn’t care how much it was, I just knew I had to have it!

I’d already figured out how to wear the top at least 3 times and thankfully, it was in my size. There was nothing left to do but add it to my cart! I knew the item would fit, thanks to trying on a few Melissa McCarthy items before, so I was very pleased when the floral masterpiece arrived at my front door. I tried it on immediately and of course, it was perfect.

Have you ever had an item of clothing that you just KNOW you’re going to wear constantly? Well, that’s how I feel about this tunic. It’s the most comfortable top I own and the oversized fit is perfection. Anything that’s flowy and not tight to my body, I’m a fan. The fact that it was on sale for less than $40 is also a major plus!

If you don’t love it and if you can’t wear it at least 3 times, don’t buy it. #wnjstyle

These days I’m very particular about what I purchase. If I don’t love it and if I can’t see myself wearing it more than 3 times, I’m not going to buy it. Of course, I make exceptions for accessories, shoes and some one-of-a-kind pieces, but for everyday wardrobe items that’s my rule.

#WNJBeauty | 6 Must Have Summer Beauty Products, Part I

May 27, 2016 by Whitney 10 Comments

Taking care of my skin – face and body – is something I don’t take lightly. Even as a young girl I understood the importance of skincare, thanks to my mother. Over the years skin care has remained a priority and I’ve found some products that work well with my (combination) skin. It’s been a lot of trial and error, but I think I have a good grasp on what works.

Related: Favorite Beauty Products + Beauty Secrets

Although most of my daily products stay the same, I often swap out and add in a few products here and there when the seasons change. I share a lot of my skincare favorites over on Snapchat, but in case you missed it here are 6 Must Have Summer Beauty Products that I’ve been using for the month of May (and some even longer).

whitneynicjames.com

The Body

1. Village Naturals Aches + Pains Muscle Relief | This body wash is perfect to use in the shower or bath after a long day. The eucalyptus tingles and awakens your skin, all while relaxing and de-stressing your muscles. You can literally feel your pores opening up and I’ll be the first to say, it feels AMAZING!

2. Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex Hand & Body Scrub | After purchasing curlBOX Body last year,  I fell in love with this body scrub. I ended up going through the entire jar in a few months time and repurchased it earlier this year. It smells divine and really makes your skin silky smooth. I use this scrub on my elbows, the back of my neck and on my heels especially. It works wonders, trust me!

3. Carol’s Daughter Body Jelly | This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned this product; that’s because I love it so much. Once I get out of the shower, while I’m still damp, I rub the Body Jelly all over my body and pat it into my skin. Once the products soak in my skin is smooth as a baby’s bottom. No seriously, it’s that smooth. When I do my self-care pampering routine, I use this in conjunction with the Shea Moisture body scrub. It’s magical!

The Face

4. Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser | I switched up my facial cleanser to this a few months back and I’ve been very pleased thus far. It’s an oil-free and hypoallergenic gentle cleanser that I use it day and night. It’s very lightweight and doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry or irritated. I’ve also heard that it’s great for removing makeup as well.

5. Carol’s Daughter Acai Foaming Face Wash | Awhile back I won a Carol’s Daughter giveaway on Instagram, so I decided to give this face wash a try. This product helps control the oily areas on my face without stripping my skin and making it feel dry. And by the way, I’m not the only fan of this face wash. I caught my husband using it a few times as well, lol!

6. Biossance The Revitalizer | This product is probably one of the best I’ve used in years. After researching the product I agreed to accept the sample of The Revitalizer; I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s paraben and gluten free, hydrating, and vegan. I use this serum day and night, on my face and neck, and it’s given my skin such a healthy glow. Even my mother and little sister noticed!
