Personal Style | Tunic and Black Pants + a Bad Hair Day

October 26, 2015 by Whitney 21 Comments

Some days my hair just doesn’t want to cooperate. On those days I grab one of my caps, turbans or tams and keep it moving! That’s exactly what I’ve been doing for the past few days. I love wearing hats during the fall/winter months. I tend to get lazy sometimes with styling my hair, so they come in handy very often. This weekend while hubs and I saw a movie I reached for a comfy and cute outfit, and of course, the outfit included a hat. A tunic and black pants are the perfect go-to look for casual weekends.

Because the weather hasn’t been brutally cold, I figured wearing these ankle length joggers would be OK. I can probably style them a few more times before the weather drops drastically. The tunic, a thrifted purchase, is actually heavier than it looks. The thick cotton material kept me warm in the theater and thankfully, I didn’t have to reach for a jacket or scarf.

Casual, comfy and cute weekend outfits are the best! #wnjstyle

I can’t talk about this outfit without mentioning the gorgeous scenery. I was taken aback at the beauty of the fallen leaves and trees. As hubby and I rode through the neighborhood, he insisted we stop and take a pics. I couldn’t argue that the scenery was indeed beautiful. Seeing the burnt orange and yellow leaves on the sidewalk literally made me smile and marvel. When seasons change you have to get out and enjoy, even if it’s for an outfit shoot. 😉

Personal Style | I’m a Sucker for Oversized Sweaters

October 13, 2015 by Whitney 13 Comments

Yes, this outfit reminds me of Christmas too. LOL! When I put on the red sneakers and looked in the mirror, I had to laugh to myself. “Someone’s ready for the holiday’s” hubs said. Regardless of my Santa’s helper outfit, I’m more than happy to wear and style another one of fall’s fashion must haves – oversized sweaters. I’ve worn this thrifted sweater before and everytime I do I feel GREAT!

Styling Oversized SweatersI just love a big, comfy, roomy sweaters during the fall and winter months. Oversized sweaters are comfort blankets in a way. They’re great to wear if you want to conceal a little unwanted bulge and depending on the style, oversized sweaters can be worn for several casual occasions.

Big, comfy oversized sweaters are another fall fashion must have! #wnjstyle

Being casual and chic as become a huge part of my personal style aesthetic. I’m sure you’ve noticed this throughout my spring and summer outfits. Adding a pretty statement necklace and a bright lip color help make a casual outfit like this chic and stylish. Also, purchasing oversized sweaters with a bit of sparkle or embellishments adds a little something extra to what could have been a drab and boring garment.

Personal Style | Styling Leather Leggings

October 5, 2015 by Whitney 32 Comments

Today’s outfit is simple, functional and chic. Those are the main elements that make up my personal style. The leather leggings are a bit outside of my comfort zone, but I stayed true to my style aesthetic and paired them with a flowy tunic, a pair of nude pumps and minimal accessories.

How to Wear Leather Leggings

Styling Leather Leggings

I wore this to church on Sunday and I’ve even figured out how to make the outfit work for my 9 to 5. Adding a pair of cute flats and a chic work tote will do the trick! If you’ve been reading for awhile you know I’m all about functional and transitional style. This is the perfect example of both.

Trendy pieces are great, as long as you can work them into your personal style aesthetic. #wnjstyle

To be quite honest, I was a bit unsure of the leggings at first. I’m not that into trendy pieces, however if I can work the trend into my wardrobe I’m good. I suggest trying trendy pieces here and there during each new season. Don’t be scared to have fun with clothes by stepping outside of your style comfort zone; your wardrobe will thank you!

Style | The Perfect Lounging Outfit

August 24, 2015 by Whitney 40 Comments

This weekend was a bit hectic because hubs and I are in the process of packing to move to our new place next Saturday. While packing can be very overwhelming, I was thankful my family came over to lend a hand. Because of their help, I know the rest of the process this week will be a breeze! With all the packing and whatnot I really needed a brief change of scenery. Thankfully, hubs was able to whisk me off to The Mayflower Hotel in D.C. for a relaxing overnight stay, which happens to be my post-birthday treat. I was thrilled; anytime I can throw on a lounging outfit and relax for a bit, I’m down!

I made sure I packed my favorite lounge item when I found out we were headed to D.C. This thrifted moo-moo is a staple lounging outfit. If I don’t thrift them I head to Marshall’s, TJMaxx or Ross; their prices and selections are always on point (starting at $9.99). Wearing this makes me feel like I stepped back to the 60’s or 70’s. I love those eras style wise so anytime I can channel that through an outfit, I’m a happy girl!

The perfect outfit for lounging and relaxing during the weekend. #wnjstyle

I like to wear garments like this because to be quite honest, it makes me feel FABULOUS. Wearing something flowy, pretty and feminine just while lounging always makes me feel good. Just because you’re in the house (or relaxing at a hotel) doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look and feel fabulous. Plus, your husband or significant other will appreciate it. I learned that from my Mom. 😉

Style | Black Maxi Dress & a Statement Necklace

August 17, 2015 by Whitney 42 Comments

I’ve had this thrifted black maxi dress for years now. I’ve worn it to a few events and every time I style it I remember how comfortable and versatile it is. It’s one of those all purpose dresses that I’m so glad I have in my closet. Every girl need an all purpose dress (or 2) in their wardrobe, right?

Black Maxi

I love how flowy and free this dress is and the lightweight material is an added bonus. For a Sunday afternoon filled with errands, a walk in the park and possibly dinner with hubs, this is the perfect outfit. The sandals give the dress a more relaxed feel and the gorgeous necklace, purchased this weekend at a jewelry fair in Gaithersburg, MD adds the perfect boho chic element. When I saw the necklace hanging there, I knew I had to add it to my collection. Before I could even think to purchase it, hubs had surprised me and purchased it as a birthday gift. How thoughtful?!

Add a gorgeous statement necklace to any plain maxi dress for instant pizzazz! #wnjstyle

The dress is also perfect for year round styling. With a cardigan and closed toe flats, or even a pair of ankle boots, this dress is fall-ready. I can even picture a ankle length duster or kimono being worn over the dress. While that may hide the ruffle and lady-like detailing, it’s still adds style and functionality to the garment.

National Thrift Store Day 2015 | 5 Must Shop Thrift Stores in Howard County, MD

August 17, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

In case you didn’t know, today is National Thrift Store Day 2015. Of course I had to share something thrift worthy, hence today’s (thrifted) outfit post. But I also wanted to share my favorite thrift stores here in Howard County, MD. I know many of you live in the DMV (DC/MD/VA) area so I hope this list is helpful. If you’re not from the area but find yourself here one day, be sure to check out the following thrift stores!

5 Must Shop Thrift Stores in @HowardCountyMD, according to @whitneynicjames!

Top Thrift Stores in Howard County | national thrift store day 2015

1. 2nd Avenue Village Thrift (Columbia, MD) This location is my go-to spot for just about any and everything! The staff is always friendly and familiar, the store is very well organized, no bad odor, and they have an amazing coat and purse section. I’ve been shopping here for years and they haven’t disappointed me yet! Location: 6515 Dobbin Road Columbia, MD 21045

2. 2nd Avenue Village Thrift (Laurel, MD) When I want some really unique jewelry pieces or hubby is looking for work shirts, we head here. It’s the same chain as the first, just a much larger selection and even more amazing finds. This location is great for housewares too! Location: 201 Fort Meade Rd. Laurel, MD 20707

3. Laurel Thrift (Laurel, MD) The store is a bit smaller than the first two locations, but their sections are plentiful. You have to really examine items very carefully while shopping here. Sometimes, like any thrift store, the items look to be in good condition but at a second glance there maybe a stain or missing button. If you’re up for the challenge, visit Laurel Thrift and I’m sure you will find something great (to keep or add to your vintage shop). My favorite thing about this location is the prices and sales. They have AMAZING price points and there’s a sale on a certain color every day of the week. Location: 9880 Washington Blvd N, Laurel, MD

4. Goodwill (Columbia, MD) I’m not really thrilled with the selection for plus size shoppers at this location, but when hubby or little sis wants to thrift this is where we go. The men’s section is decent; a lot of nice slacks and button ups. The regular size/junior sections are nice too. At any given day you can find GREAT deals from Mossimo, Style & Co. and Old Navy just to name a few. Location: 9097 Snowden River Pkwy, Columbia, MD 21046

5. Savers (Owings Mills) This location is not in Howard County BUT it’s close enough, and the store is AMAZING! I ventured here last month and I think this location has become one of my favorites for books, housewares, and plus size garments. The store is brand new so it’s organized, clean, and the staffers are all very pleasant. The prices are moderate, but I don’t mind spending a little more if need be because the quality of items here is exceptional. Check out my thrift haul video (above) and see what goodies I purchased from here last month! Location: 9800 Reisterstown Rd. Owings Mills, MD

So tell me, will you be thrift shopping anytime soon? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by and until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

June 1st already, huh? I cannot believe it! Of course, we must take a peak at my favorite outfits from last month. Looks like I wore a lot of thrifted goodies, huh?! From dresses to menswear, my May style recap is quite thrifty. I also made sure my style was comfy and chic; key elements to the perfect spring/summer outfit!

I must say my favorite look is the “Wearable Art” shift dress. Whenever I wear this dress, I feel amazing! I also LOVE the Egyptian inspired print, and it’s perfect for styling for any season! I also like the hair I added to the look, lol. Something about curly hair just makes me feel sassy and extra confident. During the spring and summer months, I’ll definitely be wearing more fun styles like that!

Style | Styling a Vintage Dress + a Style Linkup

April 27, 2015 by Whitney 39 Comments

It’s been while since I’ve purchased a vintage dress, but there was something about this black and white floral number that caught my eye. At first glance, I thought it was more of a moo-moo than a dress. I still think that actually, lol. I mean let’s be honest, styling a vintage dress can be tough. Nonetheless I threw it in the cart, determined to make it work.

When I got it home, I tried on the dress (again) and wasn’t all that impressed to be honest. But I figured adding a pair of heels and a statement jewelry piece would make this moo moo fly! I like patterns, especially floral and animal print, bt I’m not one to style an item like this. The dress has a lot going on, but that’s what’s fun about fashion. You can make pieces fun by adding your own personal touches  here and there.

Hiring a seasmstress to recreate certain wardrobe itmes is a must! #wnjstyle

I decided to wear this outfit to dinner with hubby one night. It was fun to wear, I was comfortable in it, and he thought I looked lovely. Works for me! However the next time I style this piece I’ll probably add a belt. This will give the dress a different shape. I’m also toying with the idea of making the dress into a top/tunic. Of course I’d take it to my seamstress. A trusty seamstress is a must for recreating pieces like this!
