WNJ Beauty | Beauty Tips from Your Favorite Style & Beauty Bloggers

August 4, 2015 by Whitney 15 Comments

I always find summertime beauty tips and tricks helpful. I often look forward to the beauty issue of certain magazine just so I can read about the latest products, tips and beauty findings. I thought it’d be fun to invite 9 of my favorite style and beauty bloggers to share some of their summer beauty tips and tricks with you, along with a few tips from me too.

One thing we all have in common, we follow some kind of daily beauty regimen – it’s a must! I’m sure you’ve heard of most, if not all, of these fabulous ladies from somewhere on the internet. You may have even read about them here on WNJ. Either way, you’re in for a real treat; check it out!

@brownstrings
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BEAUTY TIP LEARNED IN YOUR 20’s, 30’s & 40’s?

Whitney (WJ) – In my late 20’s I understand the importance of washing my face, every night, before bed. My mother taught me this early on, and she was right! She also taught me not to use/put everything on my face; read labels and know what works for my skin type.

Cheryl (CV) – I’m 29 so I haven’t gone through all the beauty tips for various age ranges, but I can say that a good tip would be to continue to moisturize and wear sunscreen. Great makeup starts with great skin care!

Alison (AL) – Now that I’m in my 40’s, exfoliation is my new best friend. Cells don’t turn over like they used to when I was younger, so my skin tends to look dull. I exfoliate twice a week with St. Ives Apricot scrub to keep my skin glowing.

Adrienne (AR) – Summertime heat and/or working out at the gym can cause body breakouts on your back, shoulders, and chest. Using a body wash that contains Salicylic Acid keeps my body breakout-free.

Must read beauty tips for your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s! #wnjbeauty

Chakayla (CT) – Less is MORE! I have finally become comfortable with sporting natural makeup or no makeup at all. I am totally channeling my inner Parisian.

Antionette (AB) – In my 30’s, I started having babies, so exercise was very important for me to get my body back in shape. However, I should have started exercising earlier because unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. My baby is now 19 and I am still carrying “baby fat”. Eating right and exercising before, during and after pregnancy is vital and don’t buy into that “eating for two” jazz because it will be harder to take the weight off afterward.

Glenda (GH) – Now in my late 40s, I have discovered to embrace my natural beauty. I’m free from hair dyes and I use very little makeup. The less I place on my skin and hair, the better it feels and looks. Also, because I exercise 4 to 5 times per week, I drink lots of water and herbal teas. In my 40s, I learned to embrace my natural beauty.

Molly (MS) – My FAVORITE beauty tip is to fill in your EYEBROWS and put on mascara! Your eyebrows and eyelashes are absolutely the best way to really make your face POP and seem more awake!

Ashley (AC) –My favorite beauty tip I recently learned is the power of face serum. Serum not only clears up dark marks on your face, but it can add an amazing glow and some formulas even decrease wrinkles.

Vivi (VN) – A great beauty tip I learned in my 20’s and 30’s is to use lukewarm water (leaning towards cold) to wash your face and cool water to rinse. Helps with the skin elasticity.

Beauty tips to get you ready for summertime! #wnjbeauty

Q: FAVORITE BEAUTY & STYLE MAGAZINE?

VN – In Style Magazine.

AR –   Lucky Magazine.

AB – Essence and In Style are my favorite beauty and style magazine.

GH – For beauty, Darling Magazine because it talks about beauty apart from vanity. For style, I’m beginning to really enjoy Porter Magazine.

WJ – Essence for beauty and style because the magazine represents women of color, all shades, complexions and sizes, and showcases us in a positive and beautiful light.

Q: FAVORITE BEAUTY ICON & WHY? (blogger, celeb, etc.)

CV – Although I focus more on fashion and style, when it comes to beauty, I would have to say that Mila Kunis always brings it — from her makeup to her hair. And Lupita Nyong’o knows how to work her beautiful skin as well.

AC – My mother is always the woman I look to when it comes to beauty. Everyone always guesses that my mother is at least 20 years younger than she actually is because of her clear skin and little to no wrinkles. She taught me from the time I was a child to drink water and wash your face day and night.

MS – Audrey Hepburn. She was always full of class and style and looked beautiful with OR without makeup!

Solange Knowles is the queen of a beautiful and natural face! – @chakaylajtaylor

CT – Solange Knowles! She totally understands that her face and skin are a canvas for her amazing ensembles. She is the queen a beautiful, natural face.

AL – Kate Middleton, she’s such a natural, classic beauty.

WJ – Besides my mother and grandmother, I’d have to say Jennifer Lopez. Her skin is supple, always glows, and she doesn’t wear a boat load of makeup. Her skin looks gorgeous and healthy, with out without makeup.

Monthly Favorites | Bath and Beauty Favorites

May 15, 2015 by Whitney 5 Comments

Although I don’t claim to be a beauty girl, I am a product junkie who will try just about any beauty (and bath) product once! For the month of April I had several beauty favorites, but I narrowed it down to a few of my April must haves.

Beauty Favorites

As I mention in the video below, I have used these beauty products for months. I suffered from really dry skin on my neck a while back, and the exfoliating scrub and Aloe Vera Gel have been life savers! On Facebook and Instagram I shared that I’ve been researching a lot of skincare products in my late 20’s. I finally think I’ve found the tools to keep my skin looking AND being healthy and vibrant! Some of the products I talked about in the video are listed below.

1. Jolie Bloom Caribbean Coconut Salt Scrub

2. Nyx Lip Pump Nude Gloss

3. Olay Pro-X Brush

4. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Toner

5. Aloe Vera Baby Oil

So tell me, what are some of your beauty favorites? What have you been using lately? Leave a comment below or on the video and let me know!

Be sure to follow my Youtube Channel and catch up on some other videos I’ve posted. I hope you have a great weekend…stay blessed and be safe! XO!

Beauty | #BeautyBesties Recap with SPANX & Clinique

May 5, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

This weekend I had the pleasure of heading to Nordstrom at Towson Town Center (MD) to find my Power Pair of SPANX, as well as test out Clinique’s latest spring must have foundation + concealer. Both consultations, free of charge, were part of the #BeautyBesties event they had going on all weekend!

I haven’t worn a pair of SPANX in a while, but after my consultation, I was ready to try a pair of the power shorts! This pair goes perfectly under spring and summer dresses, skirts and even jumpsuits. Wearing SPANX ensures smooth lines and no bunching; I can get with that! I can’t wait to show you all the before and after pics when I wear mine. I’m all about clean, smooth lines!  By the way, the sales associate also let me know that SPANX offered knee highs too. Never knew that!

#BeautyBesties - SPANX

After browsing and learning about SPANX, it was time to head to the Clinique counter for my next consultation. I was a bit skeptical because I’m not really a makeup girl. But the associate (Jessica) was extremely patient with me and very helpful and knowledgeable about the product. The new Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer was so smooth, lightweight and perfect for my complexion.

Jessica used number 18 Sand and the color matched my skin tone perfectly! I took her advice and wore the foundation for the rest of the day; just to get a feel for it. I was nervous about sweating and rubbing it off, but I didn’t have any of those issues. I literally forgot I had it on! To me, that’s good makeup.

So tell me, did you go to the #BeautyBesties event at Nordstrom this weekend? Have you tried the new Clinique foundation + concealer or any of the SPANX products? Let me know!

It’s safe to say that I’ll be purchasing the foundation + concealer ASAP, and I can’t wait to show you my smooth silhouette when I wear my SPANX. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO

#FearlessWoman Feature | Jhéanell of Jolie Bloom & Belle Jhéanell

March 27, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

I’m always inspired by working women who are also mothers and wives. Juggling it all is not easy, but a #FearlessWoman gets it done! Jhéanell Adams is the creator of Jolie Bloom, an eco-luxe brand specializing in hand crafted beauty products that are simply divine! I’ve tried the Caribbean Coconut Body Scrub (review coming soon) and immediately fell in love! This working Mom is also the creative blogger behind Belle Jhéanell.

With a heart of gold, a strong business mind and a passion for beuaty, Jhéanell is definitely an entrepreneur on the rise. Enjoy her interview below and be inspired!

belle jheanell - feature

What’s a typical day for Jhéanell?

Morning: A typical day starts with me seeing my sister off to school and then trying to get as much work done as possible before my son wakes up. This usually consists of responding to emails, sending out tracking numbers or finishing up a blog post that I may have started the night before. Once my son is up, we shower, eat breakfast and usually he wants to play, cuddle or have me read books to him.

Afternoon: One a good day he’ll take his afternoon nap and I’ll try to get some blogging done or make products to fulfill orders for Jolie Bloom. If he doesn’t take a nap, I give him about an hour of tv time while I continue to work. Afterwards we do some learning activities and do a few educational sing a longs.

Late afternoon/Early Evening:  I leave to get my sister from school and drop Jolie Bloom packages off at the post office for delivery that have been packed the night before. If I happen to have a cute outfit, I’ll also ask my sister to photograph it for me during this time of the day for a Lookbook post on Belle Jheanell.com

Evening: Once we’re back home, I start dinner and check my sisters homework before we sit down to eat as a family. However, if I have a shift at my part time job, I make dinner and then run out for a couple hours.

Night: Once I return from work, my husband and I stay up packing boxes in preparation for me to ship them the following afternoon. If we don’t have any orders, I do research for upcoming blog posts before getting some “me time” (catching up on my favorite shows) after everyone goes to bed.

What inspired you to create Belle Jhéanell & Jolie Bloom?

I originally started blogging back in 2008 as a way to organize my wedding inspirations (pre-Pinterest days) and journal through the process. Once my wedding was over, I continued to use the space to document my life. Having been blogging for most of my adulthood,  I’ve shared many things from the preparation of my wedding, to life as a newlywed and my excitement after learning that I was going to be a mother for the first time.

Unfortunately, my daughter was born prematurely and passed away shortly thereafter. It was the hardest time of my life and through sharing my experience on my blog, I was able to gain a great addition to my already amazing support system. Thankfully, I went on to had my son but I felt as though my site had become somber as I’d been writing through my grief. I eventually decided to rebrand it as Belle Jheanell where I regularly share outfit posts as well as my knowledge of beauty and passion for natural living.

After gaining back my confidence and wanting to do something meaningful to honor my daughters short life, I then created Jolie Bloom which is a brand of eco luxury personal care products. Having gone through such a traumatic experience, I have to say that it feels amazing that so many people know Jolie’s story and understand how huge of a role she plays in my life although she’s not physically with us any longer.

Jolie Bloom

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My top 3 women inspirations are my mother, Oprah Winfrey and Myleik Teele. All of these women have been knocked down many times but have made the choice over and over to keep going.

My mother was the person who inspired me to become an entrepreneur after witnessing her from her own business during the earlier part of my childhood. She believes in me more than I believe in myself at time and is such a cheerleader for Jolie Bloom.

Oprah is self explanatory but the fact that a poor little girl from Mississippi has built such an a billionaire dollar empire is nothing short of incredible.

Myleik’s work ethic is unlike anything I’ve seen in a while. Having met her when Curlbox was only two months old and seeing where it is now is mind blowing!

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

“Leap and a net will appear”, it’s my favorite quote by John Burroughs . You don’t have to have every single detail in place to start your business. Do you research, get started and you’ll be surprised how things start to line up.

belle jheanell - jolie bloom

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I imagine that Jolie Bloom would have grown substantially and will be housed in headquarter facility containing our office, production and shipping space. I’d love to be a couple hundred retail stores around the world by then. My dream ever since I was a little girl has been to be an author, so I’d love to have at least two books published within the next 5 years. I haven’t shared this publicly as yet, but I’m currently working on my first children’s book.

As for Belle Jheanell, I still imagine that I’ll have it as a creative outlet and journal. Most importantly, I love that people go back in my archives and are able to see my growth and how I decided to use my pain to fuel my passions and help others.

In my personal life, I’d love to have another child or two by then. Ultimately, I see myself continuing to be family oriented while building my empire and growing even closer to God.

Keep Up With Jhéanell
