Style | Wearing Shorts on the Weekend + Style Linkup

July 6, 2015 by Whitney 38 Comments

This weekend was absolutely wonderful! It was also humid, very busy and rainy, but nonetheless it was wonderful. I spent most of the days with family, which is always a great thing. Knowing that I was going to be busy I decided to wear shorts and a lightweight tunic on Saturday. Hubby and I joined my family at the River Hill 4th of July Parade. My little sister rode in the parade while representing her title, Miss American Teenager, Preteen. It was a lot of fun and she, of course, had a ball riding in a drop top white mustang. 😉

Summertime-Outfit

Wearing shorts is something I haven’t always been a fan of. But over the past few years, I have embraced my body and shape and wearing shorts has been part of that journey. Regardless of your size, shorts during the summer months is a must. As long as their appropriate and fit nicely, I say go for it!

Regardless of your size, shorts are a summer wardrobe must have. #wnjstyle

Speaking of wearing shorts, my favorite linkup from last week was Cheryl of Oh to Be a Muse.  I love Cheryl’s easy breezy outfit, and not to mention her hair! She always styles herself perfectly, head to toe, regardless of the season. She’s true to her personal style and looks great in these Zara shorts!

So tell me, are you a fan of wearing shorts during the summer months? Let me know!

Don’t forget to show off your personal style by linking your recent OOTD pots(s) below. Be sure to link your outfit back to this post. Also, visit the other bloggers who’ve linked up and say hey. I’ll be sharing my favorite linkup next Monday! Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Amy Arnold of Straight A Style

July 1, 2015 by Whitney 14 Comments

I’m sure you know this by now, but I’m constantly inspired by fellow creatives and entrepreneurs. So today I’m pleased to introduce you to yet another one of my #FearlessWoman inspirations, Amy of Straight A Style. I’ve been a blog reader and fan of Amy’s for months. Aside from her effortless and fashion forward style, I’m also intrigued by her blogging consistency and transparency in her posts. She’s more than just fashion; she’s a wife, an entrepreneur in the making, and someone who makes the latest fashion trends work for her. I’m always impressed and inspired by style bloggers who can do that. Be sure to check out her interview below, as well as her latest post on the blog. Enjoy and be inspired!

Amy - Straight A Style

What’s a typical day for Amy?

I work as an Admission and Enrollment Coordinator at a local university. I have a degree in secondary mathematics education, so although I no longer teach high school math, I love that my job keeps me in education and connected to students. I really enjoy it. Of course I often blog at night or in the morning before work. If it’s a day I need to take outfit photos, I will meet my husband during lunch or after work. I love to cook, so we eat at home most nights. In general, we are pretty boring and normal.

What inspired you to create Straight A Style?

My blog started as a personal one called The Real Arnolds. I never intended to be a fashion blogger. I have always loved clothing and style, and so I incorporated it into my personal blog. It just slowly evolved into what you see now, culminating in a recent name change and site makeover.

Who are 3 of your top women inspirations, famous or non famous, and why?

What a hard question! I know this may sound cliche, but my Nana and my mother are definitely two of them. My Nana was an artist with very distinct and amazing style. She influenced us all, especially my mother. I was very close with her and am very close with my mom. They are both amazing women, style aside, and inspire me every single day. I really don’t know that I can pick just one more woman. In general, I admire women. I love how we build each other up and relate to one another. This blogging community has been such a great example of that for me, and I am really thankful to be a part of it.

Straight A Style - #FearlessWoman Feature

One piece of advice for women entrepreneurs.

One thing that sticks out as the most helpful to me in this blogging journey was a conversation with a dear friend. I was expressing worry over whether or not my thought life was out of balance in relation to blogging. The reality is a fashion blog is all about you, so you kind of think about yourself a lot. It’s strange, and I was struggling with it. She told me that my blog was sort of like a part-time job, and it was okay for me to think of it that way. I spend a lot of time thinking about my job, so it would be natural for me to spend time thinking about my blog too if it was a job. Thankfully it’s a really fun job with lots of perks, so it doesn’t even feel like one, but her words helped me put it into perspective.

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

I would say that a #FearlessWoman is not one who doesn’t have fear, but instead she is one who doesn’t let her fears have the final say. We all have fear. I don’t think we can say we don’t. It’s what we do with them and how we handle them that make us fearless.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I hope to have a family. I’m so happily married. My husband is an incredible man. We are currently experiencing some difficulty having a baby. It’s funny because I was never a woman who saw myself as particularly motherly. We were not in a rush to have a child. After dating long distance all through college, we wanted to enjoy being married and take our time having kids. Infertility is not a road you ever imagine walking down though. Yet, here we are. Whether we are able to have a child naturally or we ultimately adopt, we are open to whatever God has planned for us, and I look forward to seeing it unfold. I have fear about it all for sure. So I’ll keep you posted!

#FearlessWoman Feature | LaQuisha Hall of Couture’d Confidence

June 17, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

When I met LaQuisha Hall, I knew she was destined for greatness. There was no doubt in my mind that I had met a #FearlessWoman. This strong willed, intelligent and lovely survivor is the CEO of Couture’d Confidence and has had much success in the world of pageantry over the past few years. She is also a highly sought after speaker and confidence coach.

I look to her for inspiration on many endevours, and have worked side by side with her or several occasions. LaQuisha is an educator and takes shaping the minds of our young women and men very seriously. She’s my sister in the spirit and someone I know will be in my circle for years to come. Enjoy getting to know LaQuisha a little more and be inspired!

LaQuisha Hall - Couture'd Confidence

What’s a typical day for LaQuisha?

I get up before the sun daily (even on the weekends!) to pray, blog and answer emails. I am an English teacher by day in Baltimore City Public Schools. After school, I can be found mentoring a group of girls via my Queendom T.E.A. program, in a rehearsal or bible study for church (Open Door Fellowship in Randallstown, Maryland). I also enjoy spending time with my handsome husband, reading books, especially novels by Jodi Picoult, writing and eating a pint of Talenti icecream, lol.

What inspired you to create Couture’d Confidence?

I was inspired by all that I have been able to achieve. I wanted to create an overarching umbrella for all that I do. I am an inspirational speaker, a mentor via my Queendom T.E.A. program, a fashion stylist inspired by my blog, Corner Curl Girl, and an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence implemented through my annual ceremony, SheRose Awards. In all three of these areas my ultimate goal is teach Couture’d (custom-made) Confidence (self-esteem and self-empowerment) which is the name of all 3 of these in one.

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

Angel Richardson, CEO of Life Coaches Rock, is a personal friend of mine. She inspires me because she successfully acts on any dream or idea she has and encourages others to do the same. She cheers me on with sincerity when I achieve my own goals. I love her spirit, smile and fierce fabulousity!

Stacia Pierce, CEO of Life Coach 2 Women, is a millionaire entrepreneur who has successfully trained others. Angel (who I just discussed) told me I should follow her. When I did, I fell in love! Soon after following her on social media, I met her in New York. She had no idea who I was but after talking with her she agreed to send me package. About a week later, I received a box full of her some of her coaching materials. Shortly afterwards, I won one of her contests which allowed me free entry to her Florida Success Tour this year. I am looking forward to her annual Women’s Success Conference this summer!

I know you asked me to only choose 3 individual women, but my final choice has to be all women I have encountered who have survived and conquered sexual abuse and domestic violence. These women inspire to keep moving forward with strength and power. They encourage me because sometimes I feel that the stories of abuse have been told enough. Then, I meet another woman who has not yet shared…

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

As Kris Kross used to sing, “jump, jump”! Often entrepreneurs will stand by to contemplate and entertain a variety of thoughts. Should they pursue their dream? Should they invest in publishing a book? Should they call someone for advice or help? Is now the time to start a new project idea? The answer to all of these questions is an emphatic yes! Jump, with or without a parachute because even if the landing hurts, you will learn how to do a better jump the next time.

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

A #FearlessWoman is one who can encourage and empower other fearless women. She gives compliments to other women as she passes them on the street. Fearless women overcome past catastrophes with present triumphs and educate others how to do the same. She wears her crown daily and knows how to pray if it begins to tilt. She apologizes when she is wrong and is empathetic to those who are not in the same place she is.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I will be a retired teacher doing what I love full-time: instilling confidence in women and girls. I will successfully launch the Couture’d Confidence clothing and accessory line. I will have at least 3 published books and maybe 1 child (lol).

Personal Style | I am a Fearless Woman + OOTD Linkup

June 8, 2015 by Whitney 31 Comments

If you’ve been following along with me for a while you may have seen the #FWIAM hashtag floating around. I actually introduced the series back in March to celebrate Women’s History Month. To my pleasant surprise the series was a hit! Since then I’ve been asked when I’m going to do another series like that. Well, the wait is over. I’m bringing back my #FWIAM series for this summer! I have a plethora of women entrepreneurs, bloggers, educators, mothers, wives and single women lined up and ready to share their fearless stories with you all. I cannot wait!

#FearlessWoman - Plus Size Style

I am a #fearlesswoman

Why is this movement so important to me? I feel it’s imperative to celebrate, uplift and inspire women, as well as show that being fearless in today’s society is the only way to achieve your goals and reach your fullest potential. Ever since I turend 28, I’ve really been embracing my fearless journey. The journey has been paved with many bumps, u-turns and lessons, but I’m fearlessly determined to continue living a life full of purpose. I want to be an example to all women that adapting a #FealressWoman attitude does wonders for your confidence, productivity, and others.

As women, it’s our responsibility to uplift, celebrate and inspire other women. #FWIAM

I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by such amazing women growing up. My mother and grandmother are the source of my fearless inspiration. They’re women of faith and distinction, but above all they’re women of purpose. Watching them throughout the years has helped shape me into the woman I am. I only wish I can be half of what they’ve been to me to my children one day. My younger sister is also one of the main reasons I’ve vowed to live this #FWIAM lifestyle. I want her to see me as an inspiration. I want to show Taylor that living a purpose driven life is the only life to live.

I’m a sucker for leopard print and gold, so their outfits stuck out to me for sure. I love seeing Sandy’s outfits and when her little princess gets in on the stylish action, I love it even more. How cute are they?!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Marie of The Curvy Fashionista

March 31, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Today is the last day of my #FearlessWoman series. It’s been such a joy introducing you to 9 fearless, dynamic and inspirational women who have and continue to inspire me daily. My final feature is none other than the plus size blogging diva and mogul in the making, Marie Denee.

Founder of The Curvy Fashionista, this Atlanta based full-time blogger is a go-getter, a patient mentor, and genuinely sweet person. Marie is a girl’s girl and strongly believes in girl power and women empowerment. She wants to see us all win! Her authenticity, drive, and confidence serves as inspiration to many and it’s my honor to share her interview today. Enjoy and thank you for embracing this series in honor of Women’s History Month.

Marie Denee - The Curvy Fashionista

What’s a typical day for Marie?

Being a full time blogger is nowhere near as glam as it may seem! LOL Most of the time, I am at home, in my scarf, with some type of maxi dress on! Bra definitely off! I am glued to my desk, researching, writing, strategizing, and plotting! There is hardly any off time for me! Although I am trying to get better at leaving the office before 7 pm! LOL I try!

But my day? I am usually (or I do try) to be up by 7 a.m. and checking my posts to see if it went live as scheduled, go into promo mode, then I check my emails! I probably have a few calls scheduled for the day. From there it is a toss up! Depending on what is trending on social, what I have planned for the week, each day is a new one! I kind of have learned to love that.

What inspired you to create The Curvy Fashionista?

It was actually random. I started it with a completely different goal in mind. I just finished my MBA in Marketing and just KNEW I was going to have a physical store and work it out! Well, with various turns of events, I launched a very short lived online store, and then my blog started to take off! Over the years, it has evolved into its own, and I have been along for the ride! Talk about a walk of faith. When I lost my job, I dove head first into growing it, not knowing where it would lead me… from there, it has become a business, an entity, a community, a destination! I am grateful for this!

The Curvy Fashionista - Marie

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non famous, and why?

Three? You know, this is hard to answer, only because I pull inspiration from sooo many women- known and unknown, family and friends, mentors and new women on the scene! I would have to say that what they all have in common is moxie, drive, and some form of strength and the audacity to chase their dreams or persevere through life’s challenges! THIS is what inspires and drives me. I love networking and supporting other women- it is sooo awesome and inspiring to find women who make it work! They motivate me to do the same!

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Find your own path/lane/purpose and do not look to others to compare, check for, or to imitate. We all have our own path, purpose, and walk. We also do not know what they are dealing with and have struggled through to get to where they are. Nor does anyone know YOUR story. While things may look ro seem to be soooo fabulous on the outside, they could be dealing with things and keeping a brave face. Also, checking for others is a waste of time and energy that you can be using to build your own dream and empire! When you learn this, supporting others, helping others, and mentoring others comes easily and without pause!

Marie Denee The Curvy Fashionista

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

You know what? I have a few ideas and goals around that, but God willing, I see myself and my brand growing to levels I have dreamt. I see my personal love life develop into something tangible and exciting! I have buried and busied myself in my work that now, I am ready for love and life and fun, in different ways. So honestly, that is something I find myself thinking about a lot! Who knows where the brand will be! I have plans, but I have learned that when man plans, God laughs… so who knows! LOL.

Keep Up With Marie

#FearlessWoman Feature | Lacey of A Lacey Perspective

March 26, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

Being a blogger in the DMV, I’ve met many stylish and ambitious like-minded creatives. Lacey Faeh is one of those people. When I decided to start blogging I was beyond excited to join the DMV blogging group, CapFABB. Meeting Lacey, the co-founder of the group, was a joy. I admired she and her colleague for creating a group dedicated to bringing area bloggers/creatives together to “collaborate, learn and grow”.

As the years went on, I began to follow A Lacey Perspective and through her posts and attending the CapFABB meetups/classes, I found myself learning so much about both style and blogging. She’s an excellent content creator and has a knack for helping bloggers reach their full potential. I’m sure you’ll find her interview interesting and motivating. Enjoy!

A Lacey Perspective - Feature

What’s a typical day for Lacey?

There is no such thing as a typical day for me. From A Lacey Perspective to my consulting to CapFABB each day there is something new that I need to tackle. Most days start with a latte and reading through blogs. Followed by emails galore. Second half of my day is dedicated to my clients whether it is logo/site redesign, photography, meetings on site or digital strategy. The last steps of my is dedicated to my blog and CapFABB. Last but definitely not least… wine. Lots of wine.

What inspired you to create A Lacey Perspective, CapFABB & ALP Consulting?

The blog is about to hit its 5 year anniversary and I cannot believe it! I started the blog because I felt like DC needed help on the style front and I was in need of a place to feel creative back in my politico days.

CapFABB just turned 4 and we now have over 500 members! It is insane! Shameless plug… you should definitely join! CapFABB was something I felt the DC blogging community needed, a place where we can all come together, learn from one another and show the world that DC has style bloggers with unique voices.

ALP Consulting is my newest baby. Almost 3 years old and was created when I realized there are so many small businesses here in DC who don’t know of the power a social presence can have. I worked in the digital space in politics for over 5 years so my experience has translated beautifully to restaurants, malls and boutiques. One other arm of ALPC is helping bloggers make their blogs a business. This part is such a blast! I love brainstorming with clients about how to take their blog to the next level and share my experiences. Lastly, one of my favorite services, is styling. There is nothing better than helping a woman realize the potential in her closet or find a that perfect dress for an upcoming event.

A Lacey Perspective - Blog Feature

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mother for her strength. Michelle Obama for her perfect blending of fashion and leadership. Olivia Palmemo for her impeccable style.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Just jump! Whether you are looking to blog or start your own small business they only way to see if it will work is to give it a shot. So stop over analyzing all the ways it can go wrong and dive in head first!

A Lacey Perspective

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see ALPC growing to a medium size digital firm with clients of all varieties and sizes.

Keep Up With Lacey

#FearlessWoman Feature | Dionne of Styled by Dionne

March 24, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing today’s #FearlessWoman on WNJ a time before. Dionne Dean is the brains and beauty behind Styled by Dionne and author of  ‘Make Your Closet Pay‘. Not only is her energy and smile infectious, but her wanderlust nature and passion for life is incredible. I admire her spirit, pay it forward mentality and above all, her tenacious work ethic. This thrift, vintage and “never pay retail” queen should definitely be on your radar, if she isn’t already. Enjoy her interview below; I’m sure you’ll be inspired to travel and live a fabulous life just as Dionne does!

10397017_813710242001732_2548099400086606762_o (2)

What’s a typical day for Dionne?

Is there such a thing as a “typical” day in the life of any entrepreneur, LOL! I wake around 4 or 5 to spend time in prayer. I find that if I don’t spend that time in prayer and meditation to get focused and centered on the purpose for my business, I’ll be rocked to and fro by the days events. Once the hubs is out the door, I head into my office and spend about an hour checking emails and social media. I work on getting all my eBay orders and thrift boxes together the night before so that I can be ready to hit the post office when it opens at 9:30. After the post office, I head to 3 or 4 thrift stores and am done by noon or 1 pm. If I have a client, I head to whichever store I’ve chosen for them an hour prior our appointment to set up their fitting room and alert the sales staff that I have a client coming. If not, I head home to upload items in eBay or spend time reaching out to potential clients.

Now, if’s it’s a morning when I have my ‘Good Morning Texas’ beauty segment, the day goes a bit different. I’m still up at 4 or 5, but I usually check on my models, go over my product details (pre-playing the segment in the bathroom mirror LOL) and selecting my outfit. I’ve tried getting my look together the night before, but I’m one of those people who has to see how I feel before I get dressed 😉

2. What inspired you to create Styled by Dionne & publish Make Your Closet Pay?

My undergraduate is in Clothing, Textiles and Merchandising and my goal was to become a buyer and travel the world purchasing beautiful clothing. However, after volunteering at various community agencies in Atlanta, I decided to switch gears. I moved to Chicago, completed an AmeriCorps Year of Service and got my Masters in Cultural and Educational Policy. I spent 6-7 years preparing high school, college-aged and graduate students for entry into the world of work and realized the one thing we didn’t spend enough time on was how to dress when you actually GOT the job. There was so much out there on interviewing skills and dressing for an interview, but nothing on building and maintaining your personal brand AT the job. So, I decided to launch a business styling new graduates, new entrepreneurs and basically anyone looking to re-brand themselves for promotion.

I published ‘Make Your Closet Pay‘ because I want people to help people get rid of the items their not wearing and reinvest that money into themselves, whether it be in paying off debt, going on that dream vacation or purchasing clothing that they WILL wear. I’ve had an eBay store since my early days in Atlanta and now that I use it to sell my thrifted items, I’ve used the profit to pay down debt, go home to London for 2 weeks and buy $45 Jimmy Choos!

Styled By Dionne Dean - Feature

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mommy. The older I get, the more I realize what an awesome woman my mother is. She was widowed at the age of 25 with 3 young children, in London, thousands of miles away from her family and friends in Jamaica and somehow just made it work. She met my dad in her late thirties and created this fabulosity that you see today 😉 But listening to her hard earned wisdom on life has made me a better wife and one day mother.

Violette Sproul, Founder of Femfessionals. I met her at a conference a few years back and was immediately in awe of her honesty when it came to managing business and life. I asked a question pertaining to timing and when to have children and she flat out told me, “There’s no good time…just do it. You’ll make it work somehow.” She’s been one of my mentors and sounding boards ever since.

My business coach, Kimberly Pitts is my idol. She is operates her business, marriage and motherhood in such excellence and is just an all around phenomenal woman. She is able to look at my business in such a different way and makes sure that I have all the tools necessary to be successful. She goes above and beyond what I pay her for because she believes in me understands that my success is her calling card. When I’m successful, SHE’s successful. Amazing woman

4. One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Go for it! I chose this road because I saw something missing in the marketplace. I believe the world is as nuts as it is because the people who are called to make the necessary changes are chained to the wrong job. If you have a desire to something, do it. The world needs your gifts, talents and abilities!

Feature - Styled By Dionne Dean

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I’ll be traveling the world with my husband and babies buying beautiful pieces for my online store. I’ll have a show produced by the Property Brothers where we go to run down stores and smelly thrift stores and turn them into high end boutiques (think the British show ‘Mary Portas-Queen of Shops). Probably have a daytime Emmy and be back home in South Florida with a condo on Biscayne. My heart’s desire is to be an ex-Pat and spend half the year in London or Dusseldorf and the other half in South Florida.

Keep Up With Dionne

#FearlessWoman Feature | Krystal of The Feisty House

March 17, 2015 by Whitney Leave a Comment

Today’s #FearlessWoman feature comes from the lifestyle blogger and budding entrepreneur, Krystal Scott. The author of The Feisty House lives with her husband and new baby girl Maya in New York. She’s been a virtual source of inspiration for me for a while now. Her lifestyle blog has several motivational posts, natural hair and makeup tips, thought provoking interviews and more.

Check out this Fearless Woman Feature with Krystal Scott, author of @thefeistyhouse. #FWIAM

Click To Tweet

Krystal has a natural zest for life and it shows through her writing, photos, and how she lives day to day. Her entrepreneurial plans are inspiring and I can’t wait to see what’s next for her! Find out more about Krystal in her interview below.

The Feisty House Feature

What’s a typical day for Krystal?

My days are a bit insane! I’ve been trying to wake up earlier in the day (so I can exercise), but my average wake time is about 7:30 AM. Then I get ready for work, grab breakfast and pack a lunch. I try to be out the door by 9:00 AM. I arrive at work at 9:30 AM and I work nonstop until my lunch break. I use that time to check my blog emails, do a quick check-in on social media, etc. I schedule my blog posts, blog-related tweets and Facebook posts as well as my blog-related Instagrams because I don’t really have the time at work to do all of that.

I have been leaving work between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM, which is great. I head home and spend some time alone before I start dinner and do some chores. After dinner I’m usually blogging and checking email, and I do that between8:00 PM and 11:00 PM. I try to write two posts within that time, but some nights I only get to the post for the next day! Blogging and having a full-time job definitely isn’t easy, and I’m constantly adjusting my schedule so that I can blog and also have time for friends and family.

What inspired you to create The Feisty House?

I started The Feisty House in graduate school when I was learning about how to take care of my naturally kinky hair. I’d been natural my entire life (never used chemical straighteners or even hair dye), but I quickly learned that I was doing everything the wrong way! I used The Feisty House to share what I was learning about my hair with other women. Fast forward five years, and The Feisty House is much bigger than natural hair!

The blog has involved into a space where I discuss and share inspirations related to lifestyle (personal style, home life, beauty) and entrepreneurship (including my DREAM JOB Interviews with Black female entrepreneurs and blogging tips).

The Feisty House Feature

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

I could say my aunt and grandmothers and be done so easily! These women work so much. They’ve worked hard my entire life. It’s been amazing to see with my own eyes what women can do for themselves when they put their minds to it.

I’m also inspired by Arianna Huffington (I’m reading On Becoming Fearless for the second time this year), and all the entrepreneurs I’ve interviewed for The Feisty House. It’s amazing to learn from women who have looked fear in the face and started their own businesses (and become successful!) in spite of being afraid.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Share your stories. Because you have no idea how your experience is going to affect someone else. You may be just what another woman needs in order to make the leap into entrepreneurship. Those stories are so valuable and such an important source of strength for me and other women who are considering working for themselves.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’ll probably still be living in New York, but also living in either South Florida or Jamaica for half of the year. And I’ll be working for myself, FULL-TIME! The Lord has yet to reveal to me exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’m on the right track. I’m excited about the future!
