Personal Style | Dress with Pockets & a Matching Set

Wearing a dress with pockets is every girl’s dream. Well, it’s a dream for me. I absolutely adore dresses with pockets. Especially if the dress is already flowy and has a pretty print. So it’s safe to say today’s outfit is a dream, lol. Of course, there’s a story behind the outfit. Now that I think about it, pretty much all my outfits have a story behind them. Want to hear this one? OK, here goes…

OOTD - Wearing Sets

Remember when I purchased this kimono on a trip to Nordstrom this summer? It was back when I was searching for summer items that could easily transition into the fall. This one was perfect! I was so smitten with the print and fit I knew it would get a lot of wear. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, hubs and I ventured to Nordstrom Rack to return a few things. I was looking through the sale dresses and found an item that looked familiar. It was a dress with the exact print as the Sejour kimono! What are the odds? Without hesitation I found my size and threw it in the cart. Hubs chuckled when he saw it and asked, “don’t you already have that?” I explained everything to him and proceeded to purchase the dress.

I didn’t think to style the items together until one Sunday, I started looking for a dress to wear to church. Because it was a short sleeved dress I wondered what I could wear to make it appropriate for the season. Reluctantly I pulled out this kimono, tried it on, and the outfit was complete!  I’m not oppose to wearing items that are “matchy matchy”, but I thought wearing them both together would be TOO MUCH. I was wrong – the prints blended perfectly. In the end I was able to wear a dress with pockets and my favorite kimono. Go, me!

Personal Style | Styling Leather Leggings

I’m back and I’m SO thrilled to continue sharing my personal style outfits with you all! Today’s outfit is the kind I’ll definitely be styling all fall/winter long. This style is simple, functional and chic; the main elements that make up my personal style. The leather leggings are a bit outside of my comfort zone, but I made them work with my style aesthetic by adding a flowy top, a pair of nude pumps and minimal accessories.

Styling Leather Leggings

I wore this to church on Sunday and I’ve even figured out how to make the outfit work for my 9 to 5 – adding a pair of cute flats and a chic work tote will do the trick! If you’ve been reading for awhile you know I’m all about functional and transitional style. This is the perfect example of both.

To be quite honest, I was a bit unsure of the leather leggings at first. I’m not that into trendy pieces, however if I can work the trend into my wardrobe I’m good. I suggest trying trendy pieces here and there during each new season. Don’t be scared to have fun with clothes by stepping outside of your style comfort zone; your wardrobe will thank you!

Again, it’s so good to be back! Thanks for engaging with me on social media during my blogging break and to all those who completed my Reader Survey, I truly appreciate it! There are so many great things coming for WNJ, thanks to your feedback. If you’d still like to take the survey feel free to do so here (it’ll only take 3-4 minutes).

One more thing! Don’t forget to linkup your recent OOTD below and be sure to link it back to this post. And in case you’re wondering, yes…I cut my hair. I wanted something new for the season so the short cut did the trick! Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Personal Style | Summer Personal Style Recap, Part II

Hey there! I hope you all had a marvelous holiday weekend. I spent most of my time organizing and cleaning up our new place, swimming, and cooking with hubs. All in all, the weekend was a great one and I’m so happy we have a short work week! Before I get into fall style, I want to take one last look at my favorite summer style outfits from the blog. I had so many I wanted to re-share so I figured a Part II post was necessary. Let’s take a look!

This summer was probably one of my favorites style-wise because I finally became 100% comfortable with my personal style. I know what colors, prints and styles work for me and I know how far I’m willing to step outside my style comfort zone. After much experimenting, donating old clothing and shopping around, I’m very comfortable with the clothes in my closet. That’s such a great feeling!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I now know the stores and brands are my go-to’s and for the most part, I don’t stray from those places. I’ve become very adamant about wearing clothing that’s comfortable and practical for my lifestyle. So much so that I’m in the process of creating a How-to Find Your Personal Style post and webinar for the upcoming season. Be sure to sign up for my mailing list so you can be the first to find out when that goes live!

So tell me, how would you define your personal style in 3 words? What do you struggle with while trying to create your personal style? Let me know!

As always thanks for stopping by! Don’t forget to show off your personal style by linking your recent OOTD pots(s) below. Be sure to link your outfit back to this post. Also, visit the other bloggers who’ve linked up and say hey. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Style | Year 28 Personal Style Evolution + My Go-To Shopping Stores & Sites

As my 29th birthday approaches tomorrow I thought it’d be fun to take a look back at my personal style evolution over the year. When I turned 28, I promised myself to get in tune with my personal style. My goal was to find  and wear clothing that was practical, in style, comfortable and chic. Also if the clothes made me feel good, I was sold! I gravitated towards black and white, neutrals and prints. I also made sure my accessory game was on fleek, LOL!

Style | Wearing Dresses Over Pants

I’m all about wearing dresses over pants and have been for years. It’s very boho chic, comfortable and easy; key elements to the perfect outfit. Needless to say when I saw this ($12) dress at Macy’s, my immediate thought was how cute it’d look over a pair of jeans. The paisley-floral mixed print and lightweight material also helped in winning me over.

A friend told me that I pull off this style very well. She then went on to let me know that not everyone can wear it the right way. That got me thinking; are certain styles and trends really only for certain people? After much thought, I came to the conclusion that if worn with confidence and if it fits a persons style aesthetic, anyone can wear anything.

If you, like me, plan to wear this trend throughout the spring/summer here are 3 simple styling tips for making this trend work:

1. Preferably skinnies. When wearing the dresses over pants trend I tend to go for skinny jeans/pants. I like the sleekness of a tighter pant over a flowy dress. I also find wearing skinnies under dresses is more flattering.

2. Accessorize. It’s no secret that I love to accessorize. With this trend I like to add statement necklaces, big earrings, or even statement cuffs.

3. Make it personal. As with any outfit be sure it fits your personal style. Have fun with colors, prints, and lengths when deciding which dress to wear over your pants.

Style | 5 Tips for Wearing a Casual Winter Outfit

Casual winter outfits have taken over my closet! Thanks to yesterday’s snow fall, this past weekends snow storm, and the cold weather in general, that’s all I think about when getting dressed in the mornings. Although I had to snap these pics in the evening, I was determined to show off one of my latest outfit, as well as share 5 easy tips on how to curate the perfect casual winter outfit.

Casual Winter OOTD

Plus Size Casual Winter OOTD

1. Play with prints. I opted for stripes with this look and I’m glad I did. Adding prints to a casual look gives an outfit instant personality. Sure, I could have gone with a solid color top (like I do a most times), but for this look I wanted to do something different. Playing with prints was that something different and I’d like to think it worked. 😉

2. Play with accessories. Accessories are more than just jewelry items; hats and scarves count too. Adding a cute tam or a beanie is the perfect way to style a casual winter look. Not only does it look cute, but it will also keep you warm!

3. Go for leggings or stretch denim. I’m partial to leggings, as I’m sure you can tell, but I’m also a fan of stretch denim. During the winter months it’s so easy to want to reach for something less appealing, like sweats or baggy pants. Quality leggings and stretch denim are easy to find at stores like Nordstrom, Marshalls and Macy’s. The two options also make for a nice smooth finish and are the perfect paring for casual winter pieces like tunics and over-sized sweaters.

4. Wear a pair of cute boots or booties. The perfect ending for a causal winter outfit is your shoe choice. Keep warm and wear a stylish pair of booties or combat boots. You can also throw on a pair of cute sneakers.

5. Stay warm. No matter what you decide to wear, be sure to stay warm. Casual winter outfits are fun to style, but don’t forget to choose pieces that are both stylish and practical.

Style | Styling Neutral Colors

There’s something about styling neutral colors that makes getting dressed in the morning a breeze. As a fan of black and brown, my love for neutrals should come as no surprise. Neutral colors are so easy to style and I think most of my style blogger friends would agree. Every time I browse Pinterest for outfit inspiration I see so many bloggers (and celebrities) wearing these colors. Some may see this neutral thing as a trend or fashion phase, but I think it’s here to stay.

Styling Neutral Colors

Neutral colors are a huge part of building a chic and simple wardrobe. You can easily create a plethora of outfits with a few good neutral pieces. Take the neutral queen herself, Kim Kardashian, for example. Her style has drastically changed over the years, thanks in large part to dating and marrying Kanye. Whenever she steps out, she’s usually dressed head to toe in neutrals. Her looks are so well put together and she looks undeniably chic and effortlessly stylish.

Aside from Kim K., one of my favorite style bloggers, Shirley, does this neutral styling thing so well. When I made the decision to transition to a more simple wardrobe, I immediately began drawing inspiration from Shirley. I admire her simple and minimalist take on personal style, as well as her ability to master being feminine and a bit edgy so perfectly.

The Best of 2014 Personal Style Edition | What I’ve Learned About Personal Style

Happy Monday, everyone! This weekend was such a great one. Not only was I able to spend some QT with hubby, but we also got a lot of things done around the house. It’s that time of the year when I start cleaning out closets, drawers and everything in between. So, we did a little bit of that on Saturday and Sunday. By next weekend, we should be done….I hope. 😉

Today’s post is a recap of my favorite outfits from my Personal Style Monday posts. I started this linkup as a way to express my personal style and of course, I wanted to give you all a chance to do the same. I started out by having just 8 or so links for months and now I have 30+ linkups almost each week. I LOVE it and I thank you all for linking up and sharing my links each week. Check out some of my favorite Personal Style Moments of 2014, as well as some things I’ve learned about my personal style along the way.

Clearly I embraced my curves, wore a lot of dresses, and had no problem showing a little bit of skin earlier this year. I enjoyed experimenting with different looks, hairstyles and trends; all while staying true my personal style. I feel like my style has grown, yet has remained simple with a touch of uniqueness that only I can bring. I’ve “found myself” as far as personal style goes, and I’ve pushed my limits when it comes to what I will and won’t wear. Daring to bare my legs in certain outfits, like the black Jessica Simpson dress (above), was liberating and wearing shoes other than flats and sandals was huge for me.

I enjoyed wearing a bit more color this year and I wasn’t afraid to go bold with my outfits. I also learned the importance of knowing your body type. I know what looks good on me and what works for my body; 2 very important things to know when figuring out where to go with your personal style. Something else that’s important to learn while curating your personal style? Trying different things with makeup. For me this was tedious task, but I must admit that it was fun. Weather it was a lip color or a bit of mascara, I took myself to another level in terms of my day to day beauty routine. From makeup to skin care, I’ve re-learned the importance of taking care of my skin as well.

One of my favorite personal style posts this year involved statement jewelry. It was fun sharing my favorite pieces with you! Wearing statement pieces this year saved a lot of my outfits form being boring and blah. It was rather enjoyable styling different pieces and my collection has grown a lot since I published that post. I’d planned to do a separate post on how to shop for statement pieces on eBay, but I didn’t get around to it. No worries; it’s on the top of my to-blog-about list for the new year.

Of course I’ve stayed true to my love for thrifting. Showcasing different outfits with several of my thrifted purchases has been a personal style highlight. I’ve been able to influence others to try thrifting, as well as teach people how to successfully thrift for certain items. Thrifting is a huge part of my personal style and it will continue to be…forever. From thrifted accessories to sweater coats, I’ve had fun showing how to stay on trend without breaking the bank.

So tell me, what did you learn about your personal style this year? Are there any your favorite personal style look from 2014 above? Let me know!

Since this is the last of my Personal Style posts of 2014, I’ve decided to leave today’s linkup open until the last day of the month. Feel free to post as many looks as you’d like from now until then. Thank you all SO much for linking up with me and I look forward to seeing your outfits in the new year. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
