Lifestyle | 11 Ways to Have a Better Day

November 18, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Since the move, I’ve been trying to get my morning routine down pat. It’s been about 3 months in the new place and I’m beginning to get better with it. Although I can go with the flow, I’m such a stickler for routine. I’m much more productive when there’s a set routine in place. I’ve been working on ways to make my mornings and days a bit easier and I think I have a good grasp what works for me. Here are 11 easy ways to have a better day and a great morning!

Ways to Have a Better Day

1. Pray and express gratitude. | As soon as I open my eyes, I whisper or say “thank you, Lord”. Expressing gratitude for a new day is the least I can do. My husband and I also pray together before he heads to work. It sets the tone for our day and I’m so thankful we’ve made this a morning ritual. Afterward, I take a few moments to myself and say a personal prayer as well. Some days I’ll read a scripture or my Daily Bread instead. Either way, I start each day with prayer and expressing gratitude.

2. Find and repeat a positive affirmations/quote. | Every morning I find an affirmation or quote that fits my mood and I repeat it 3 times. I sit with it for a moment and if it’s something I feel compelled to share, I’ll post it to my Instagram. Positive words make me feel good and if I can share a small piece of that positivity with others, I do it.

3. Drink cold water or a cup of hot tea. | Depending on the day, I’ll opt for a cold glass of water or a warm cup of tea in the a.m. If I need a burst of energy, I go with the ice cold water. It’s a great way to jump start and wake up the rest of your body. If I know I have an easy-going day ahead, the hot cup of tea does the trick. It calms, soothes and gets me ready to for a nice relaxing day.

4. Eat something. | I haven’t always been the best at eating breakfast, but I now make it a point to eat something about 30-40 minutes after I wake up. Even if it’s a piece of fruit or a 1/2 a bagel, I make sure something is on my stomach soon after I wake up. Nowadays I usually make eggs, grilled peppers and a piece of toast or a bowl of oatmeal. Both meals are hearty and keep me full until lunchtime.

5. Take a cold (or lukewarm) shower. | I usually shower after eating and I LOVE those moments. The bathroom is like my sanctuary. All my ah-ha moments and brilliant ideas happen in the shower, lol. After I wash my face and complete my morning face/teeth brushing routine, I hop in the shower. At first, I make sure the water is warm, but a few minutes before I get out I turn the water to cold or lukewarm. That burst of cold definitely wakes me up!

6. Take a moment. | After my shower, I like to take a moment to myself and sit on the side of the bed. Here I usually just sit in silence to gather my thoughts. It’s moments like this I just breathe and try to pay attention to my breath. I’m trying to ease into meditation so this helps get me used to sitting still, if only for a few moments.

7. Listen to Music. | Still on my bedside, I’ll reach for my phone, scroll through my music and turn on my Morning Playlist. I may even turn on an audiobook or podcast, depending on my mood. Mostly, music is my #1 choice. I listen for a few moments, while still sitting on my bed, hook the phone to the speakers, then continue getting ready.

8. Stretch. | While getting dressed, I stretch a bit in between putting on my clothing. Moving and stretching help continue to wake up my body. I’m the worst at stretching, so I try to do this while listening to music. I’m usually already moving and dancing around so it’s perfect!

Do these 11 things and instantly have a better day! #wnjinspired

9. Make your bed. | My grandfather drilled this in my head at a young age and thankfully, I carried this good habit over into adulthood. Making the bed every day creates a calm environment in your bedroom. Plus, it looks nice! When I come home after a long day the last thing I want to look at is an unmade bed. Seeing the bed made and neat gives me peace of mind. In our household, it’s a must. Being the passionate hospitality professional he is, hubs really appreciates that I’ve made this a habit and he too makes the bed if he leaves after me. #TeamWork

10. Leave a few minutes early. | This is something I constantly work on, but leaving the house a few minutes early eliminates a stressful commute to work. Leaving early leaves time for those out of nowhere traffic jams or unexpected accidents. It also allows you to arrive a few minutes early, giving you time before you head to work to breathe, say a quick prayer, and get ready for whatever craziness might come.

11. Smile. | Throughout the day I smile, at strangers, those I work with, and even myself. It’s just so much easier to be pleasant and flash a smile every now and then. You never know who your smile may uplift during your day.

#WNJReads | What You Should Be Reading to Keep You Motivated

November 12, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

A few days ago someone asked what I’ve been reading, so I posted a few of my reads on Instagram. I wanted to share here on the blog as well; I think it’s a great topic to discuss as we prepare for the New Year. Hopefully these suggestions will give you some ideas and in turn, you can send some suggestions my way! There are a few more books on my to-read list (by January 31st), but these are the few I’ve been focused on at the moment. Check out the video and description of each below!

1. Our Daily Bread | I’ve been reading this devotional for years and I suggest it to just about everyone who asks for an inspirational read suggestion. It’s a daily devotional, filled with short stories, practical applications and references a story in the Bible to tie it altogether. I get them mailed to my home and I also use the app several times a week. If you’re looking for an easy and impactful daily devotional, check it out!

2. Destiny, T.D. Jakes | This book is a must read if you’re searching for a your purpose and trying to figure out why you’re here. This book is truly life changing and came at the perfect time. Not only did I have the pleasure of meeting the author, but he also encouraged me to continue pursing and living my purpose. Powerful moment, for sure. If you get a chance to read this book let me know. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

3. ZAG, Marty Neumeier | Thanks to my Mom I found out about this book. This is yet another “on time” read, as far as where I am in my blog and business journey. It’s an easy and straightforward read on how to stand out from your competition and how to “zag” when everyone else is doing the same thing. GREAT read!

T.D. Jakes - Destiny

4. Essence Magazine (October & November Issue) | I’ve been a subscriber to Essence Magazine for years. These 2 issues, one with Kerry Washington on the cover and the other with Taraji P. Henson, did not disappoint. Both were filled with very useful financial, life and beauty tips/info, geared towards the African American Woman. If you can get your hands on these issues, you won’t be sorry!

5. Self (October Issue) | Although I’m not a subscriber, I often purchase this Self Magazine (and others)  when one of my favorite celebrities is on the cover. I mean let’s be honest, imagery draws everyone in right? I’ve been a fan of Jessica Alba for a while and I admire her as a business woman, wife and mother. Seeing her on the cover, I knew I had to purchase this issue. She talked a lot about building her billion dollar brand while being a woman, mom and wife. She also let readers know a few of her woman inspirations. Check it out if you can.

6. O Magazine (November Issue) | I’m a fan of O Magazine and this issue was not only visually appealing, but uplifting as well. My favorite part of the issue, aside from Oprah’s 70’s inspired outfit, was the pocket size quotable inspiration cards.  You can pop out these cards and add them to your vision board, keep them in your wallet or mirror as daily reminders.

What You Should Be Reading

So tell me, what do you think about what I’ve been reading? What books, magazines or devotionals have you been reading lately? Let me know?

Thanks for reading and be sure to check out the video for an even more in-depth look at what I’ve been reading. Be sure to subscribe to my YouTube Channel for more videos! Also, be sure to enter the Kate Spade #FearlessWomanIAM giveaway, HERE. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

#WNJSocial | My New Instagram Approach + 5 Amazing Women to Follow

November 11, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

For the past 8 weeks, I’ve been steadily building my new Instagram account. I’ve been able to grow my following from 0 to 850 (+) in this short amount of time. When I had my old Instagram I had a decent following, yes, but I mostly posted without intention. I aimlessly shared images that I liked and hoped people would find them interesting. Not the best tactic.

As a visual person, I’m constantly inspired by images, which is why I now focus so much on imagery. I do my best to share clear pictures, provide quick and valuable content, as well as a few real-life moments here and there. All in all, I share images with intention and images that are aligned with my purpose. I share what I want to see. I’m also more aware of who I follow and who I allow to follow me. I’m very protective of my brand and I’m picky about what I allow my mind to be consumed with when it comes to social media. Below are 5 amazing women I enjoy following on Instagram. Check them out!

Who to Follow on Instagram

1. @FearlessWoman_Iam | By now I’m sure you’ve heard about the #FearlessWomanIAM movement, created to highlight and inspire fearless, stylish and entrepreneurial women of today. I decided to create an Instagram account in hopes to continue uplifting women by sharing images of other powerful women, insightful quotes, and thought-provoking questions. The feed is interactive, positive, and geared towards the fearless women.

2. @KylaLive | The creator of Pink Proverb, an inspirational and lifestyle blog, has a very inviting feed. From real-life happenings to heartfelt reminders/quotes and a sprinkle of personal style, Kyla shares a plethora of enjoyable images. This is definitely an account to follow if you fancy that mix.

Be careful what you allow yourself to consume on social media. Protect your mind. #wnjsocial

3. @Alex_Elle | I love a good word or quote and Alex provides just that through her intentional and minimal Instagram feed. Her transparency is refreshing, and her intention to inspire is always evident.

4. @FourOneOhBlog | I fell in love with this account after meeting Tia, the blogger behind Four One Oh!, this summer. Her images tell a story and you can tell that she’s very intentional with what she shares. From fashion, to food and events, Tia’s feed comes to life! Seeing some of her pictures make you wish you were there.

5. @SwitchPivotorQuit | Filled with encouraging business & lifestyle content, this Instagram feed is designed to support and encourage women. According to the SPQ website, the creator, Ahyiana Angel, creating an environment where others find encouragement as a result of her positive energy, skill, and fearless attitude is one of her proudest moments.

So tell me, who are some of your favorites to follow? Let me know!

#WNJInspired | How to Finish the Year Strong Without Overwhelming Yourself

November 4, 2015 by Whitney 16 Comments

There’s no getting around it. The end of the year is near. If you’re like me, you have several goals you’ve been working hard to achieve throughout the year. There may even be some goals you’re scurrying to accomplish before the year ends. I’m right there with you. As we rush to check things off our lists, it’s important not to drive ourselves crazy in the process. Speaking from experience, being overwhelmed and acting like a crazed maniac is no fun. Here are a few tips on how to finish the year strong, without overwhelming yourself.

Finish the Year Strong

Write it down. | I lead with this suggestion all the time when giving advice on how to be productive. You have to write your goals, ideas, and plans down on paper in order for them to become a reality. There’s something about seeing your plans on paper that makes plans that much more attainable. Grab a pretty planner, journal or notepad and start writing. Even if you just have ideas and no solid plan of action, write it. It’s better to brain dump and get it all out first, then figure out and create the plan of action. You may find that writing down these last few 2015 goals may have to wait until 2016. That’s OK. But if you don’t write it down and start thinking about it, you’ll never know.

Figure out who you need. | Do you need a business or finance coach? Possibly an accountability partner or mentor? What about an intern or assistant? Not sure about you, but I’m at the point where I’m considering adding a few people to my team. In order to finish the year strong and ensure a successful 2016, I need a little help. No one can do it alone. With the blog growing and #FearlessWomanIam preparing to fully launch, I’m in the process of figuring out who (and when) I need to add to my team. Admitting that I need a little help to accomplish everything I have planned is a huge step. Never be afraid to ask for help and realize that in order to be successful, you need a solid and reliable team to assist you.

Write your ideas down, do the work, and watch them become a reality. #wnjinspired

Be realistic. | Setting realistic goals is a must during anytime of the year. If you’re setting new goals to complete by the end of 2015, be realistic. There isn’t much time left, so your end of the year goals should be short and concise. Maybe you have that last 5 lbs to drop before 2016. Very doable – create a plan and go for it! Possibly you want to re-design or re-arrange a room in your home. Use your calendar and lock in a (realistic) date to complete this task. Jot down exactly what you’ll need to make this happen in a blank journal or notepad, pin a few images for inspiration, figure out what stores to visit and what you can maybe do yourself, and get to work. Don’t try to squeeze in too much. You can always start the process and complete it in the 2016. Some plans/goals do in fact require more time.

Make your plans known. | Share your “last minute” goals with those around you. Going back to figuring out who you need – letting people know what you need in order to achieve a goal is a good thing. You never know what advice, tips or resources others may have to help you crush your goals. Protect your dreams, yes, but don’t hold them so tightly that you hide them from someone who can possible help make that dream come true.

Share your ideas with others, but have discernment when deciding who to share with. #wnjinspired

Events | 3 Things I Learned from the Brown Girls Love Empowerment Brunch

October 28, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of attending the Brown Girls Love Empowerment Brunch at Aredo + Bardeo restaurant in Washington, DC. The event was hosted by the founder of Love Brown Sugar (LBS), Christina Brown. The New York based blogger is the first blogger I followed when I started my journey. I was drawn to Christina’s warm online presence and also very intrigued with her impressive resume.

I remember reading that Christina worked for Honey and Vibe Magazines and I immediately got excited. As a former journalism major with an extensive internship/work background in print media, we had a lot in common. Once I found her blog it was evident that Christina was not only an excellent writer, but she also shared my love for fashion and style. Of course, I had follow! Attending an LBS event and hearing her speak in person was truly a dream come true. Here are 3 things I learned from Christina at the Brown Girls Love Empowerment Brunch.

Brown Girls Love Brunch

1. Be Fearless | Simply put, “get over your fear and step outside of your comfort zone.” When Christina spoke those words I felt like she was literally talking to me. I’m all about being fearless and going after what I want, but there are times I’m a little nervous to step outside of what I know. Lately I’ve been ignoring the fear and going for it anyway, hence the creation of my #FearlessWomanIam movement. It’s natural to have fear, but the key is not allowing that fear to cripple you or hold you back from pursuing your purpose.

2. Be resilient | Christina stressed being flexible and being able to shift. Things don’t always go as planned and in those instances, we have to be ready to shift and change direction. In doing this, it shows that you’re capable of bouncing back from a setback. Staying the course, no matter what comes up, is a definite key to success. Christina candidly shared a few of her setbacks and to see how resilient she’s been despite those challenges is inspiring.

3. Be Confident | I think exuding confidence, in any field or industry, will take you very far. Being able to introduce yourself at an event or gathering is something Christina feels immediately showcases confidence. Something as simple as an introduction says so much about a person. It says that you take yourself seriously, you’re about your business, and it instantly makes others respect you and what you have to say. First impressions are everything.

First impressions are crucial. Make yours a good one by being confident when introducing yourself.

#WNJInspired | The Importance of a Solid Starting 5

October 7, 2015 by Whitney 11 Comments

I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying, “you become like the 5 people you hang out with most – choose carefully.” This is actually one of my favorite sayings and one I’ve been taking rather seriously these days. I’m a firm believer in having a close, tight-knit group of people you can depend on, bounce ideas off of, and learn from. I call these people in my life my starting 5.

Let’s think about basketball for a minute. The starting 5 consists of the following players – (1) Point Guard, (2) Shooting Guard, (3) Small Forward, (4) Power Forward, and (5) Center. Without these key players, there would be no foundation and to be honest, there would be no game. So in the “game” of life, having a solid lineup is essential to your growth and success.

Having a Solid Starting 5

Success means different things to everyone. For me, success is living a purpose-driven life, while making a living inspiring women to be stylish, influential and fearless. Therefore I need motivating, honest, and direct people around me. I need those people who push me when I want to give up, those who are honest (and tactful) in helping me tweak or even change some of my ideas, and those who aren’t afraid to tell me when I’m in over my head or that I may need to set more realistic goals.

In the game of life, having a solid starting 5 is imperative for your growth. #wnjinspired

Click To Tweet

What you need from your starting 5 may be different, but having honest and motivating people on your team are traits that should be consistent. Whatever your definition of success, you cannot be truly successful (and happy) if those around you are negative, draining and unmotivated. It just won’t work. Think about the 5 people you spend most of your time with; are they helping you get to where you want to be? Also, are you helping them reach their goals?

Having a Solid Starting 5

So tell me, do you have a solid starting 5? Are you playing on the right team? Let me know your thoughts!

As always thanks for reading and commenting. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
