Self Care | Why Taking a Break from Blogging Is Good for You and Your Readers

September 15, 2015 by Whitney 17 Comments

Hey there! I missed you all for yesterday’s Personal Style Monday. I found myself checking my site to see who’d linked up, what they were wearing, and there was nothing there! So why didn’t I post yesterday? Glad you asked. I honestly didn’t feel like it. There, I said it. I had an outfit post and content ready to go, but something in me just wasn’t feeling it. I was feeling the outfit because I looked fly, lol…but I didn’t feel like the editing and sharing part.

That was a wake up call for me. This summer I’ve been providing stylish outfits, personal style tips, inspiring features, and I’ve LOVED every moment/post! However, I’ve been so adamant about feeding my readers great content that I neglected myself. No bueno. In a nutshell, it’s time for Whitney to hit the pause button and regroup.

self care

Hitting the pause button has been something I’ve thought about and talked about with my husband and family for a few weeks. For some reason, I kept convincing myself that I’d wait until “next week” or “next month”. After all, I’ve worked so hard to remain consistent throughout the summer and I’ve really been trying to define and grow my brand. So taking a break from all this just didn’t seem right. However after attending Blogalicious this past weekend, I realized that taking a break can actually be beneficial, for me and you (my readers).

You can’t serve others if you neglect yourself. #wnjinspired

Self care is crucial for a happy and healthy life. It’s also a main ingredient to success. Regrouping, rejuvenating and relaxing is a good thing! It allows your mind to rest and reset itself. If done correctly, taking a break from blogging (or any other job/occupation) helps refuel your mind and re-energize your body. When you hit the play button and get back in the game, you’re ready to share SO MUCH MORE amazing and useful content with your readers. And that’s what I intend to do, starting Monday….lol.

Importance of Self Care

I learned SO much over the weekend, as well as throughout the summer. I now need time to sit with and sift through those lessons, tips and ideas and figure out how to implement them when I return. I’m already excited because I have so much helpful content and activities planned for WNJ and #FearlessWomanIam. But I must make self-care a priority in order to continue serving my readers and potential clients.

We must make self care a priority in order to continue serving others. #wnjinspired

So tell me, what do you think about taking blog breaks or breaks in general? Have you been making self care a priority? Let me know!

In the meantime, I invite you to join me on my new Instagram page, as well as sign up for my newsletter. I’ll be updating and sending out information through both outlets this week, as well as when I return. As always, thanks for reading and following. I truly appreciate the support here on WNJ, through social media, and even through the emails. It’s such a blessing and helps get me through those “blah” days. I’ll be back tomorrow so until then, stay blessed and be safe…XO!

#WNJsocial | 5 Amazing Women You Should Follow on Periscope

September 10, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

Periscope has become my new thing. I mean it’s great! I love watching scopes every now and then, especially when the topics are about blogging, social media, entrepreneurship and lifestyle. I’m not addicted to periscope, or at least I don’t think I am, but I do watch certain “scopers” on what seems to be a daily basis. As I prepare to head to Blogalicious this weekend, I’m really excited because I’ll get to meet a few of my favorite periscopers/bloggers, as well as sit in their master classes and workshops. That said, here’s Part I of my 5 women to follow on Periscope list. Enjoy!

Who to Follow on Periscope

1. Whitney Nic James (@whitneynicjames) – Of course I had to make the list, lol. I’m not on as much as I’d like to be, but when I am I talk about inspiration, style, marriage and everything in between. It’s really a hodgepodge of topics and a continuation of what I post here on WNJ, as well as on my other social media channels. I plan to do more scoping this fall so be sure to follow!

2. Rochelle Washington (@rosereddpaper) – Rochelle is my kindred spirit/soul sister. Her scopes on branding, creativity and life happenings are such great pick me up’s. Her delivery is honest and real; some would say a bit “in your face”. I’m the kind of girl who can appreciate that delivery, so I love it! Be prepared to be in your feelings, but ready to receive what she’s saying. Rochelle will be honest with you and will challenge you to be and do better, which is so necessary. Her messages come from an honest, since place – always.

3. Mattie James (@mattieologie) – Mattie is another honest and real deliverer of a good message. Like Rochelle, she always comes from a good place. She also comes from a place of gratitude. You can tell in each scope that she’s thankful for her supporters, AKA her Live What You Lovers. Her positive and go-getter attitude is infectious. She scopes about the business of blogging, style, and how to live what you love, while making a #cutecoin while along the way. Her scope is a must listen; tell her I sent you. 😉

5 must follow women on @periscopeco! #wnjsocial

4. Maya Elious (@MayaElious) – This Atlanta based design and brand strategist is the truth when it comes to branding and making money online. I respect her hustle and admire her work ethic; it’s incredible! Like her sister Mattie, Maya is always willing to share what she knows with her followers. She’s open and transparent about her business struggles and doesn’t mind sharing the in’s and out’s of what it’s really like to be a young entrepreneur. Be sure to follow her on Periscope and while you’re at it, check out her latest income report. If this doesn’t motivate you to go after your passion, not sure what will!

5. Leslie Hendricks Young (@FASHIONdujour) – Leslie is yet another one of my favorite people. I’ve had the pleasure of featuring her on the blog and whenever we get a chance to chat, I walk away feeling great. So of course, I follow this beauty on periscope! She scopes about life and relationships (marriage) and comes from a spiritual angle. I respect her realness and desire to share her Christian beliefs and morals with her followers. In the world we live in, Leslie’s approach and messages are refreshing and indeed necessary.

So tell me, what do you think of my 5 women to follow on Periscope list? Do you follow any of the ladies I mentioned above? Let me know!

I hope you take some time to check out these amazing women. Part II of my list will be published soon. In the meantime, check out these leading ladies and be inspired! As always, thanks for reading and follow all with me on social media as I enjoy the Blogalicious conference this weekend! Be blessed and stay safe…XO!

#WNJDrives | 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander #DriveMitsubishi

September 9, 2015 by Whitney 3 Comments

For most of the summer I’ve had the pleasure of test driving several different cars. Hubs and I are not in the market for a new car, however we don’t mind test driving for future reference. Also since we were moving this summer, the cars I’ve been able to drive have been spacious enough for us to pack and load up during the move. Last week this cute red 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SE S-AWC Premium was my companion. It was the perfect ride for everyday errands, last minute packing, and a few back and forth rides to D.C.

At first glace I was smitten with this cute car. Once I opened the doors and saw all the space, I was even more pleased. The last row of seats folds down to make for even more space, which came in very handy when we picked up our new bed-frame! I was also impressed with the sound-system and the Sirius radio capabilities. I went from The Heat to the Heart & Soul stations the entire time the car was in my possession.

Overall I had a good experience while driving the car, but I must be honest and say the car was not as smooth as the others I’ve driven this summer. I felt a lot of the bumps and turns on the highway while commuting. Hubby and little sis both agreed and while it wasn’t bad enough for me to stop driving the car, it was a bit disheartening.  However the following additions (available when purchasing the SE S-AWC Premium) made up it for the bumps along the way:

  • power glass sunroof with tilt and slide function
  • leather seating surfaces
  • power driver’s seat with (back) seat pocket
  • wood grain interior trim panels

So tell me, have you ever driven the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SE S-AWC Premium?  If not, what car do you currently drive? Let me know!

As always thanks for reading and commenting. I’ll be back with one more car review this month (next week). I have a car being sent for my Blogalicious trip this weekend, so be sure to look out for that recap and car review. Until next time, be blessed and be safe!

Personal Style | Summer Personal Style Recap, Part II

September 8, 2015 by Whitney 22 Comments

Hey there! I hope you all had a marvelous holiday weekend. I spent most of my time organizing and cleaning up our new place, swimming, and cooking with hubs. All in all, the weekend was a great one and I’m so happy we have a short work week! Before I get into fall style, I want to take one last look at my favorite summer style outfits from the blog. I had so many I wanted to re-share so I figured a Part II post was necessary. Let’s take a look!

Summer Style Recap

Summer Style Outfits

Kimono // Travel Style

This summer was probably one of my favorites style-wise because I finally became 100% comfortable with my personal style. I know what colors, prints and styles work for me and I know how far I’m willing to step outside my style comfort zone. After much experimenting, donating old clothing and shopping around, I’m very comfortable with the clothes in my closet. That’s such a great feeling!

Building your personal style should be fun, precise and realistic! #wnjstyle

As I mentioned in a previous post, I now know the stores and brands are my go-to’s and for the most part, I don’t stray from those places. I’ve become very adamant about wearing clothing that’s comfortable and practical for my lifestyle. So much so that I’m in the process of creating a How-to Find Your Personal Style post and webinar for the upcoming season. Be sure to sign up for my mailing list so you can be the first to find out when that goes live!

So tell me, how would you define your personal style in 3 words? What do you struggle with while trying to create your personal style? Let me know!

As always thanks for stopping by! Don’t forget to show off your personal style by linking your recent OOTD pots(s) below. Be sure to link your outfit back to this post. Also, visit the other bloggers who’ve linked up and say hey. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Entrepreneurship | DIY Brand Lab & the Bland2Brand Workshop

September 4, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

When I was approached by the lovely Toni Patterson, co-owner of the DIY Brand Lab, I was more than intrigued. After reading about the company and mission and talking to Toni, I knew us meeting was indeed purposeful. Toni and partner Treica Warnholz  share my passion for correctly and purposefully branding yourself, as well as helping other entrepreneurs to the same.

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been diligently working on upgrading my brand over the past few months. From adding more purposeful content, to launching my #FearlessWomanIam movement, to offering social media consultant services, I’m serious about taking Whitney ‘Nic’ James to the next level. Connecting with the DIY Brand Lab fueled me to continue taking the necessary steps to brand myself and grow my blog as a business. I’m excited to share a brief interview introducing the ladies behind DIY Brand Lab. I hope you all check out their website and attend their upcoming Bland2Brand workshop here in the DMV area on October 20th, perfect for creative entrepreneurs!

IMG_9507.JPG

What’s a typical day for Toni & Trecia?

There’s no typical day. Even though we have combined design experience of 15 years, DIY Brand Lab is a “baby” brand. We work on it every day so that we can let people know we’re here to help and empower entrepreneurs to build their brands. We spend time marketing, making media connections, attending events, managing logistics, etc., so there’s no typical day.

What inspired you to create DIY Brand Lab?

Toni: I’ve been working 1-on-1 with clients for about 5 years through my parent company, Skye Media Group. Clients would come to me and not be prepared to brand. They would have a lot of ideas for developing their brand but no system, process or order in doing so they would be stuck, confused and unmotivated. I founded DIY Brand Lab as an answer to the individual who wants a brand but not sure how to go about it, or is frustrated from trying to brand or rebrand themselves.

For a start-up or current business owner, lacking the skills and budget to fund their brand was a hindrance. I wanted to fulfill a need in the marketplace to empower individuals to brand themselves, create their own website and be able to manage these things. The kick is that we work with the attendees 1-on-1 in a group setting to help them bring their brand vision to life.

I asked Trecia (Warnholz) to join me because I saw the potential of the workshop and knew I needed assistance. Through a Facebook group we’re a part of, she answered this call. Trecia is an expert in her own right working with non-profits, government agencies and other entities for over 10 years in design, branding and technology.

Toni Patterson & TRECIA WARNHOLZ | DIY Brand Lab Dynamic Duo

What is the mission of DIY Brand Lab?

Our goal is to eliminate the stress of branding and design by working with you directly at your side to teach and guide you through the process. You’ll be learning and doing a lot but this isn’t a stuffy classroom setting. It’s a fun, energetic and positive environment for you to create and, in the end, your brand will reflect the love and attention you’ve put into it (with our help, of course). This is why we’ve developed Bland2Brand so you can stop wasting time and money and get to the core of your brand, craft it and showcase it for the world to see.

What sets you apart from other branding consultants/companies?

We’re not afraid to share the secrets of building a brand and business. We’re not intimidating by allowing people to know what we know and know how we do things. They’re going to use what we teach them on their own business – not steal from us, so to speak.

Who should attend the upcoming DIY Brand Lab Workshop and why should they attend?

They should attend because of the value. Not only will they receive a fresh website, head-shots, branding, and logo but they’ll receive priceless design and technology training from Experts in a 1-on-1 setting as well as build community around their business.

DIY Brand Lab workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to:

Get taken seriously as a power player

Stop running around in circles about how to create your brand & website

Create a brand you can’t wait to show off

Transition from an employee to boss

Connect with other entrepreneurs in a space that promotes fun, life + freedom

Stop procrastinating and start building your empire

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Invest in yourself. If you can buy expensive material things such as shoes, purses and nights-out, you can afford to invest in your brand.

DIY Brand Lab

Where do you see the company in 5 years?

Transitioning from a local to national company.

How can we keep up with you?

Style | 5 More Thrifty Bloggers You Should Follow

September 3, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

A few weeks back I shared Part I of my thrifty bloggers to follow and today I’m back with Part II. I’m excited to share 5 more thrifty bloggers to follow! All of these bloggers have been on my radar for years and I’ve actually had to pleasure of working with or hanging out with most of them. So let’s meet these thrifty and stylish beings, shall we?

Thrifty bloggers

1. Thrifting Diva. Ayana’s thrifty fashion sense is always on point and she is without a doubt one of the sweetest bloggers I’ve met since I began WNJ. Her style is so fashion forward, chic and never over the top. I really love her take on the latest trends and how she always thrifts the best trendy pieces, and makes them look amazing! She also provides great thrifting and style advice on the blog, so be sure to check her out.

2. Two Stylish Kays. Ms. Keren is the thrifting diva of the ATL. Her finds are mind blowing and she’s an expert at finding high end items at unbeatable prices. She’s very giving with her thrift knowledge and has Thrifting Bus Tours (in Atlanta) that always look like so much fun. One of these days I’m going to make it down there and attend one of her tours, for sure! Her style is very sassy and feminine, as well as affordable. Can’t beat that!

3. Rashon Carraway. I’ve been a fan of Rashon’s, also known as Mr. Goodwill Hunting, since I saw him on the Nate Berkus show. He’s a style, furniture and decor expert and knows his stuff when it comes to thrfting. Rashon has a classic, fresh and well put together take on style and it’s very inspiring. The way he approaches decor and furniture refurbishing is very similar. I respect his passion for well-made and tailored suits and his line of vintage menswear and lapels (The Carraway Concept)  is stunning. My husband lurks his IG page often for outfit inspiration and truth be told, so do I!

5 (more) thrifty bloggers to follow! #thriftwithnic

4. Heart, Print & Style. Vivi is my DMV blogger boo, hands down. She and I bond over thrifting, celebrity culture, fashion and so much more. Her style is one of my favorites because she’s a genius at styling thrift and non-thrifted items. This DC styleista has a great collection of thrifted skirts and accessories – I’m also so smitten with her vintage brooches. Another great thing about Vivi’s blog is the mix of fashion and lifestyle posts. If there’s an event in the DMV area, she’s there and has a GREAT recap about it!

5. Just Jewels 4 You. Wendy, another Atlanta based thrift queen, is the aficionado of all things vintage. Her knowledge on vintage apparel and accessories is extremely impressive and the way she puts her outfits together is effortless. Wendy’s style is feminine, vintage, polished. I absolutely adore her pretty dresses and skirts! She’s also the founder of the Facebook group 365 Dresses – check it out!

So tell me, do you follow any of my thrifty blogger faves? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by today and until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…xo!

Style | 5 Fall Must Have Accessories, Part I

September 2, 2015 by Whitney 13 Comments

Fall will be here before we know it and of course, I’m excited about fall fashion! It’s by far my favorite season for SO many reasons. I mean from the scarves, ponchos, boots and cute tea/coffee mugs, I get super excited. So of course I must share my top 5 fall must have accessories. Let’s take a look!

Fall Must Have Accessories

Pretty Phone Case. This fall I’m on the look out for a new iPhone 6+ phone case. It’s a small treat that I purchase for myself each season and I always find the cutest ones on Etsy, eBay or Best Buy (clearance section).

Agenda/Planer. I LOVE a good agenda/planner. I actually have a large calendar at home for our family events and appointments, but I opt for a notebook-type planner for my personal use. Last year (and this year) I used the Kate Spade planner (purchased at Nordstrom) and was very pleased. This year I may go with another Kate Spade, or I may venture online to find something different. Either way, an agenda/planner is a must have and of course, it has to be cute!

Pretty Mug. I’m a tea drinker, especially during the colder months. So a pretty mug to hold my herbal tea, and even soup, is a must. As I mentioned before, Etsy is a great place to shop for these girly and fabulous mugs. The designs are so fun and festive! Marshall’s, TJMaxx and Home Good has a lot of affordable options too.

Etsy Coffee Mug

Poncho. Ponchos are great for cool days/nights. I tend to get warm when wearing big bulky coats/jackets, so I usually go for a poncho or wrap during the fall. Thrifting capes and ponchos is my favorite thing to shop for, but you can also check out H&M for great options too!

Floppy Hat. I’m definitely a hat girl. From caps, tams, floppy hats and beanies I can’t get enough! A floppy hat is a must have for fall and I actually just purchased one a few weekends ago at Nordstrom Rack. It’s the perfect classic accessory to add a little something to any outfit.
