LifeStyle Feature | Tanesha of Girl With Curves

November 5, 2014 by Whitney 5 Comments

I’m so honored to introduce today’s LifeStyle feature, Tanesha of Girl with Curves. Tanesha has been inspiring me with her classic and effortless style since I began my blogging career.  Her recent entrepreneur endeavors, Girl Wth Curves clothing, has also been a source of inspiration. She’s a pioneer in the plus size blogging community and is as sweet as they come. Enjoy her interview and be sure to stop by her blog and shop!

Girl With Curves - Style Feature

1. Where are you from and where do you currently reside?

Born, raised and currently reside in the SF Bay Area.

2. What inspired you to start the Girl With Curves clothing line?

From a really young age, my dream was to be a designer. Growing up a girl who was not only always the biggest but also the tallest, I dreamed of making clothes that would fit girls and women who’s bodies were like mine, versus the models and celebs I saw in magazines. It was frustrating not being able to wear the amazing clothes I wanted to wear because they weren’t made in my size or they weren’t long enough, so I became fascinated with the thought of making anything my heart desired.

After starting the blog in Feb. 2011, as a creative outlet outside my former career in technology, I saw a potential to make the Girl With Curves brand into something more, and made it my goal to one day launch a collection.

 3. Who is the ideal GWC customer?

The unapologetic size 12 – 24 curvy girl seeking classic, sophisticated style with a fashion-forward edge.

4. What’s your favorite piece form the GWC Fall Collection and why?

The Frill Hem Blazer in Ivory!  It goes with everything from jeans to a pencil skirt, and it’s appropriate for the office as well as casual settings.  I’m all about functionality and versatility for my own wardrobe, so I try my best to carry that same fashion philosophy into the clothing line.

Entrepreneur, blogger and designer @TaneshaAwasthi shares useful tips on style, life and more!

5. Looking ahead, where would you like to see the GWC clothing line in 5 years?

My goal is for GWC to be available in boutiques in every major fashion city in the world, in addition to becoming a major online retailer.

6. As a wife, mommy, and an entrepreneur, how do you find balance in your everyday life?

I’m the oldest of 6, so I think growing up in a large family where everyone was always involved in sports and other activities in addition to school taught me how to manage many things at once.  My mom is a wizard at managing many things at once – she runs a Daycare, is the President of a National Softball League and has an eBay store. So I think I get my multi-tasking talents from her!  I also keep a very tight calendar and I let nothing stand in the way of my daily to do list.

7. What advice do you have for someone who’s trying to find their passion and purpose in life?

No matter what anyone says or how far out of reach they may seem, always envision yourself accomplishing your goals and do everything in your power to achieve them, and it will happen!  And YES, what every wise person has ever told you is completely true – there’s no secret ingredient to success. It’s about hard work and believing in yourself every step of the way.

I’m from Pasadena, California but I currently reside in Sacramento, California. I am a woman of many hats, however currently, I’m a self employed Digital Strategist for a few folks.

How do you define your personal style?

My personal style is eclectic + minimalist. I like balance in my wardrobe, so I may wear all black one day with a signature accessory piece to set my whole outfit off.

Name 5 must have wardrobe staples every woman should own?

ABOUT GoodLooknOut

How long have you been a blogger?

For a little over three years and it’s been a very interesting ride too!

What inspired you to start GLO and what is your vision for GLO?

I was unemployed, bored and pregnant! I read a lot of blogs and decided, hey, I can do this. Never thought I’d go psycho crazy and fall in love with it! My vision for GLO is to create an online destination, for women to share, learn and most importantly be inspired into growth. You know, look out for one another!

GoodLooknOut

What is the definition of a GLO girl?

GLO Girl is witty, caring with a intense desire to help a fellow sista out. Pretty simple!

What’s the best and toughest thing about being a blogger?

The best thing about blogging are the relationships you form with other bloggers from all over the world. I’ve made friends with people, I’d never come to know in my usual day-to-day routine. I can go to any city and always find something fun to get into because of the relationships I’ve formed with bloggers from all over.

The toughest thing about blogging is being able to stomach trolls and negative comments. As bloggers, you put yourself out there for the world to see and, unfortunately, not everyone will like what you put out there. Some bloggers don’t even dare to read the comments after pressing the publish button and I know exactly why. Getting over the hump of not caring what others say or think is easier said than done.

ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE

What makes you happy & what inspires you?

Growth inspires me and makes me happy! I love the feeling of mastering something or being able to take a lesson from an experience. The relationship I’ve formed with myself and my higher power really keeps me going too. I love the fact that through faith, I’ve been able to always see the glass half full and “go with it”, so to speak. I’m also inspired by people who speak life into themselves and into others. You know those people you meet who make you want to do better, challenge you and have the unique ability to make you feel uncomfortable. These are the people my mind has always been attracted to. I find them and then I do what I can to keep them around.

As a wife, mother, and entrepreneur, how do you find balance in your everyday life?

I actually try my hardest to follow this zen checklist I created a few weeks back. It took me until 29 years of age (omg did I just reveal that) to realize that life without a sense of balance is no life at all. I’ve tried hard to take hold of my life with proper time management, scheduling time to do absolutely nothing and ensuring that I’m spending time cultivating my creative needs. Don’t get me wrong, there are still those times where I absolutely FAIL and nothing gets done AT ALL!

Marie Young - Good Lookn Out

What are 3 things you do daily to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

(1) I go to boot camp three times a week, (2) try to eat as many small meals as possible throughout the day and (3) drink an insane amount of water, sans any soda whatsoever. This is the only way, I feel, you will make it in this process, junk food infested world.

Any advice for someone who’s trying to find their passion and purpose in life?

Stay focused, stay committed and stay in your creative space as much as humanly possible. Things don’t always come together until that moment you’ve worked so hard that even you think you’re about to go insane. Then, BAM things will slowly start piecing themselves together!

Thrifty Friend #17 | Jen of Fashionably Employed

October 9, 2014 by Whitney 9 Comments

Thrifting for work wear is something I really enjoy! It’s amazing how many well made and tailored blazers and dresses you can find. Jen of Fashionably Employed is a whiz when it comes to thrifting for work wear. I’ve been following her blog for a while and I really admire her “Thrift Eye”. Loft, J. Crew and Banana Republic are just a few labels Jen has found and thrifted at her local thrift stores. She’s great at mixing thrift and non-thrift items and she even re-fashion’s some her clothing. A thrift master and a skilled DIYer? Genius! Jen’s enthusiasm about thrifting is refreshing and her knack for sewing is something I’d love posses. Enjoy her thrifty interview below and be sure to stop by and check out her style blog!

Fashionably Employed - thrift feature

Name, Blog Name & Location?

Jen, Fashionably Employed, from Chicago, IL.

How long have you been a thrifter?

I started thrifting about three years ago.

What are 3 words to describe your style?

Conservative, classic, and colorful

Fashionably Employed - style
How did you get into thrifting?

Hmmm. That’s a really good question to which I’m not sure I exactly remember the answer. I think it evolved over time. A few years back I started reading lots of blogs in various niches, but personal style blogs and minimalist blogs certainly topped the list of topics about which I enjoyed reading. I appreciated the aspect of considering and attempting to minimize the impact our lives have on the world around us. So as my style developed, I dabbled in secondhand shopping to not only find more unique pieces that I wouldn’t see all my co-workers wearing but also to be more conscientious about the sustainability of my style choices. Not being impulsive or wasteful in my purchasing habits at thrift stores when low prices can be so tempting to indulge took some practice, but I think I’ve developed some discipline in my three years or so of thrifting.

How often do you thrift?

Not as often as I’d like, but that’s probably good for my bank account. Ha. I stop in a thrift store in my hometown of Chicago about 5 – 6 times per year. I like the selections at the stores near me, but they aren’t always my favorite. However, I ALWAYS make plans to stop at both of the thrift stores near my parents house when I am home to visit them. I love the selection and make it a priority to stop in and check out what’s new. I visit them 2 – 3 times per year, so consider that another 4 – 6 visits to stores. Finally, I look forward to stopping at a local thrift store when I travel in order to explore a collection outside of my standard stomping grounds.

What are some of your favorite Thrift Stores in your area?

Savers and Goodwill are my favorites. There is a Salvation Army near me that’s alright, but the selection doesn’t seem to be quite as great. However, I think the true ticket to a great thrift store really depends on the neighborhood in which it’s located. The quality of the selection (the real selling point for me in a good thrift store) is highly dependent on the donors. So I often favor thrift stores in neighborhoods with residents who I expect would have similar shopping habits to me (or shop at stores I’d like).

Fashionably Employed - feature

What would you say to someone who wants to try thrifting but has no idea where to start?

Start slowly and be disciplined. It’s very easy to fall into a trap that something is cheap so why not buy it. Chances are that mentality will leave one with a closet full of cheap things only a few of which they love and wear. Also, plan to commit plenty of time (at least an hour or two) when stopping into the store. Thrifting is a long-winded exploration through racks and racks of miscellaneous items. Finding a diamond in the rough brings so many shoppers back to thrifting, but they likely spent many hours sifting through stacks before landing on that perfect piece. It’s a far different experience than walking into a well-organized chain store with a selection of styles in current colors and trends.

What items do you look for most when you thrift?

Clothing, Accessories, Home Decor or a little bit of everything? Definitely clothing. I occasionally stop in the accessory or home decor section if I have something specific in mind, but I spend the majority of time in search of clothing. More specifically, I head straight for the dress section. Dresses tend to be pieces that are unique and fun but also have less wear and tear than some other types of items. I may stop in the blazer section and then the skirt section. I don’t spend as much time in the casual knits (t-shirts, light sweaters, etc..) because these items tend to be a bit more worn. And basics can be tough to find. Most people exhaust the lives of their basics before donating them. So if these pieces do make it onto the thrift store shelves, they likely are a bit tired or worn by the time I consider them as secondhand purchases.

Are there certain items you will not thrift? If so, what?

Socks and undergarments, for sure. Also, I have never looked for a pair of jeans at a thrift store. I’m certainly not afraid to buy them. But considering the difficulty in finding a perfectly fitting pair of jeans coupled with the various sizing uncertainties inherent in thrifting, I think I have just shied away from the challenge so far. Maybe one of these days when I have good chunk of time and energy on my hands to try on a boatload of pairs, I’ll give it a shot.

Fashionably Employed - thrift feature

Any fashion/style inspirations? Celeb or non-celeb?

Boring as it may be, none are top of mind. I gather most of my style inspiration walking down the street checking out what others are wearing and perusing Pinterest. I avidly check my Pinterest feed and pin regularly to keep track of all the inspiration I love.

What’s the biggest misconception, in your opinion, you think people have about thrifting?

That it’s gross. I understand the clothes have been worn by someone else, but I always wash or dry clean the clothes before wearing them. (Sidenote: If a piece needs to be dry cleaned before being worn, consider that in the total cost of the item. It really is just part of the effective purchase price.) Maybe thrifting being gross is an opinion and not a misconception, I suppose. But I have found plenty of high-quality pieces at budget prices that have been well-worth a little wonder about where they have been before landing in my closet.

How can we keep up with you?

Blogging + YouTube | What Should I Do?

October 7, 2014 by Whitney 12 Comments

I’ve been back and forth with my decision to head (back) to YouTube. I mean I was never really a huge YouTuber, but I did have a few thrifting videos here and there. Lately, I’ve been really feeling inspired to get back to it. Acting on it, well, that’s another thing.

I mentioned in this post that my YouTube days would return in late summer. As you can see that didn’t happen, lol. Yes, I’m still dragging my feet. But I have a good reason, lol. I’m thinking about making my channel a true extension of my blog. What would that entail? Without going into all the details, below are a few ideas I’ve been tossing around.

 1. Making “Inspirational Tuesday’s” a weekly or bi-weekly YouTube segment

2. Introducing Style Bloggers and Entrepreneurs via-YouTube

3. Doing (my own) product reviews & monthly favorites

4. Exploring and filming my experiencing at shops, restaurants, etc. (local & non-local)

YouTube

As I continue to blog, I don’t want to get stale. I think trying different approaches and new things is always a good idea. I also think listening to what your readers want is another important factor. That said, you know I have a question (or 2) coming! 😉

What do you think about YouTube in general? Did any of my ideas stick out to you? Do you have any suggestion of what you’d like to see me cover on YouTube? Let me know!

Don’t be shy. Comment below and let me know what you think. You can also contact me here with any ideas, suggestions and thoughts. Your feedback is appreciated and I truly appreciate how much love and support you all show me. It’s a blessing. Hope to hear form you all soon. Until then, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

OPRAH’S LIFE YOU WANT WEEKEND IN D.C., PART III – Final Moments & My Takeaways

September 26, 2014 by Whitney 4 Comments

Happy Friday! Today is the last recap of my experience at Oprah’s Life You Want Weekend in D.C. Day two, also my favorite day, was filled with a lot. Not only did we hear the trailblazers speak, but we were also schooled by Oprah. She had us complete three workbook activities; my favorite was entitled See Your Life Today. We were told to make a pie chart and divide it into slices based on the areas we chose from a group of words. We then had to draw a face, good, so-so and bad, into the slices based on how we felt about that area of our life.

This exercise helped put my daily life into perspective. From the looks of it, my spouse, family and spirituality are extremely important and I give those ares a good amount of attention. However, (enjoying) my hobbies and living a healthy lifestyle are areas I need to give more attention to. What I took from this worksheet was that while I have somethings to work on, I have time to do it and I will do better.

Oprah Quote - Life You Want Tour

Towards the end of the day, I was able to meet the Paralympic athlete and Dancing With the Stars contestant, Amy Purdy. She presented the Toyota “Standing O’vation” Award to Jas Boothe, Founder and President of Final Salute, Inc. According to their website, Final Salute Inc. is a non-profit organization which believes in paying homeless female Veterans with the proper respects due to them for the service they have provided to our country. Final Salute also works with the Veteran in establishing a plan towards independence. I was honored to meet such an outstanding woman. Her passion for helping the Veterans in this program is immensely inspiring.

Meeting Amy was also a joy. Not only was I a fan of her dancing on DWTS last season, but I admire her strength in overcoming such a traumatic experience in her life. Her positive energy and bright smile is contagious and I really enjoyed our brief chat.

Life You Want Tour - Standing O'vation

So tell me, which part of my Life You Want Weekend  did you enjoy reading the most – Part I, Part II, or Part III? If you loved them all, that’s cool too. Let me know! 🙂

All in all, the Life You Want Weekend was truly a blessing. A lot was reconfirmed for me during those two days and I’m forever grateful for receiving such inspiration. I left the conference completely full and ready to continue living my life on purpose. I hope you’ve been inspired in some way after reading my 3-part recap. I pray you have a wonderful weekend. Until Monday, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Thrifty Thursday Spotlight – Patrice J. Williams of Looking Fly on a Dime

September 25, 2014 by Whitney 8 Comments

Hello there and happy Thrifty Thursday! Today I’m taking a break from my Oprah’s Life You Want recap to introduce you to one of my favorite thrifty bloggers! Patrice J. Williams is the blogger behind Looking Fly on a Dime and I’ve been a follower since I stared blogging. Her blog covers all things thrift related, as well as affordable and stylish fashion tips and advice. Just a few short weeks ago, Patrice released her thrifting book Looking Fly on a Dime. This book is a great source for both avid thrifters, as well as those who want to thrift but don’t know where or how to start.

When it comes to looking fabulous on a dime, Patrice knows her stuff. It’s been a pleasure following her and I can’t wait to see what’s next for this New York fashionista. Take a look at her thrifty interview below and be sure to grab a copy of her book on Amazon. Enjoy!

Looking Fly on a Dime - Feature

ABOUT PATRICE & THRIFTING

1. Name, location and how long have you been thrifting?

I’m Patrice J. Williams and I live in New York, NY. I’ve been thrifting hardcore for 13 or 14 years.

2. Why did you start thrifting?

My Mom says I used to always love the Salvation Army when I was a kid, but my first recollection of thrifting was when I was a sophomore at Temple University. I only started thrift shopping out of necessity. I had an induction ceremony to go to and I needed an outfit but had limited cash, as I was waiting on my work study check. I stumbled upon a thrift store near a fast food restaurant and I haven’t looked back since! I was able to get an entire outfit (button down top and suede skirt) for less than $10.

Looking Fly on a Dime

3. What are 3 of your favorite thrifted items to date?

About 70 to 80% of my wardrobe is thrifted, so it’s hard for me to pick, but some of my top picks are:

– Dsquared Parka for $2. I bought it at a Salvation Army coat sale and the sales associate marked the price down because she thought it was a children’s coat. I loved the coat, but eventually sold it on eBay for close to $500.

-Theory Military Jacket for less than $1. I like going to outlets and stores that have clothes priced by the bound or bag; that’s where you get the real deals. I found a Theory jacket at the Goodwill Outlet and it’s been a constant in my wardrobe for 5 years now. It’s an olive color, which I normally wouldn’t wear, but when something’s so affordable, you can’t help but try something new.

–Vintage Zig Zag Flat Boots. I typically wear heels, but I love a good pair of flat boots that have amazing details. The boots I found were less than $10 and I’ll have to resole them soon, but they always get serious wear every fall and winter. I always get tons of compliments when I wear them. I always tell people that it’s the little details that really elevate your outfit and my zig zag boots are a prime example of that.

ABOUT LOOKING FLY ON A DIME

4. What inspired you to write Looking Fly on a Dime?

I tend to get the same thrift shopping questions over and over (how do you find a thrift shop, how do you clean the clothes, why do I keep striking out, etc.) so it was time to finally write the book on thrift shopping. There are hardcore thrifters, but there are also so many people who just don’t know where to start. In my book, I break it down from how to find a shop, the best strategies while you shop, and how to clean your clothes once you get home.

5. What’s the most important thing you want your readers to get from the book?

After readers finish their copy of Looking Fly on a Dime, I want them to feel empowered to thrift and cultivate their individual sense of style. I’ve worked at fashion magazines for years and I often see women who feel overwhelmed by style. My mission is to remove that intimidation from fashion and make it affordable and accessible for every single woman.

looking-fly-on-a-dime-book

6. What’s next for you? Any T.V. segments, events…we want to know!

I just finished hosting another one of my Ready, Set, Thrift! events in NYC and I’m working on planning some events in other cities for late fall and winter. And of course continuing to promote my book.

7. How can we keep up with you?

Oprah’s Life You Want Weekend in D.C., Part II – Trailblazers in Full Effect

September 24, 2014 by Whitney 6 Comments

Day 2 of The Life You Want Weekend in D.C. was my favorite. Not only did we complete workbook activities taught by Oprah (more of that in Part III), but we also had the opportunity to be inspired by the stories of 4 amazing trailblazers. The trailblazers included Elizabeth Gilbert, Iyanla Vanzant, Pastor Rob Bell, and Mark Nepo. Each speaker brought something different to the table and of course, I gained much insight from them all.

life you want weekend in D.C.

Mark Nepo

His calming nature captivated the audience as he began to speak about being a cancer survivor. That experience “rearranged his core“. He went onto explain that being present and holding nothing back is imperative to living the life you want. Another great point he shared was that in life, you take turns being the teacher and the student. We don’t know everything, but we do know somethings. It’s OK to sit back and be a student in life from time to time. And understanding that “no one can make it alone” ties into this as well. In life, we all need one another. There’s just no getting around it.

Elizabeth Gilbert

Elizabeth’s speech stuck with me the most. Walking out to the song “Brave” by Sara Bareilles let me know that we were in for a powerful message! Elizabeth’s strength and fearlessness is admirable. She made it clear that “if you want to change your life, don’ expect it to be easy and painless”. Going through different seasons in life is natural, but it can be difficult. The hard lessons, the lost friends, the scrutiny for certain decisions we make – it’s tough. But we can and will get through it. The life we want for ourselves is on the other side of all that we’re scared to go through, but after hearing Elizabeth speak I realize even more that it’s worth it!

Life you want tour D.C.Rob Bell

Rob Bell burst onto the stage full of energy! The takeaway from his portion can be summed up with his quote I shared on Instagram – “The life you want begins with embracing the life you have.” I couldn’t agree more. We can’t go through life expecting and wanting a better life if we don’t appreciate the life we’re already living. Being grateful and living in the now will prepare us for something even greater. Bell also pointed out that “we rush through the things that transform, shape and change us.” This hit home for me. It was a reminder to be constantly aware of how certain situations and moments change my life in a positive way.

Iyanla Vanzant

I was really looking forward to hearing this phenomenal woman all last week. I’ve been reading her books for years, thanks to my Mom, and being able to hear her speak was quite a treat! Iyanla pointed out a few things that made me go, “hmmm” and “ah, yes.” One of them being “when building a new life, be careful about who you hold onto and who you expose your self to.” That right there spoke volumes. As I continue to grow I’ve noticed that I’ve been very careful about those things. Another nugget she shared was that “in relationships, you have to have a vision.” I agree with this 100%. I believe that life is all about relationships, but more importantly it’s about the purpose of each relationship. We should ask ourselves from time to time, why are we building a relationship with a certain person? What do we plan on learning/or gaining from that relationship? Going back to the first lesson, be careful who you hold onto. Building a relationship with everyone you meet isn’t necessary. Lastly, Iyanla stressed the importance of learning to forgive yourself. We (may) struggle with this, but its important to do this in order to live the life we really want.

Life you want tour D.C. - Iyanlya

So tell me, which trailblazer do you think you would have enjoyed? Any takeaways from what the points I’ve shared? Let me know!

Be sure to come back Friday for my final recap of the event of my Life You Want Weekend in D.C. experience. I’ll be wrapping up my thoughts and sharing a few other things with you as well. Until then, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
