#FearlessWoman Feature | Viki of Be Victorious Prep & The Bravado

March 30, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

Today’s #FearlessWoman feature is a dear friend. With 12 years of pageant experience, Victory Mohamed, also known as Viki, is one of the most fearless, hard working women I know. While her expertise is in the pageant industry, Viki also has a wealth of knowledge on several topics like public relations, current events, fashion and entrepreneurship. She’s anything but one dimensional and that is one of the many qualities I love about her.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with this former Miss Baltimore one-on-one on several occasions. Watching her transform the lives of so many young girls, including my younger sister, has truly been a blessing. A passionate, family oriented and strong entrepreneurs, it’s my pleasure to introduce you all to her today. Enjoy her interview below and be inspired!

Viki Mohamed - Be Victorious Prep

What’s a typical day for Viki?

I typically try to start each day with a small workout and I take a quick peek at my schedule to make sure I am aware of what is coming up for the day. Before getting to the coaching studio, I spend a few hours reviewing emails and doing a lot of work for clients (this could be searching for appearances for them, reviewing paperwork, drafting speeches etc). Once at the studio, I can spend 4-8 hours with clients, one-on-one in personal sessions. Afterwards, you can bet that I rush home to spend a few hours with my husband and family…but then it is back to the laptop to do more research, client work, blogging, and whatever else it takes to keep my brand rolling. Once I’m ready to shut down for the evening, I try to clear my mind by creating a checklist of things to do the next day because if I don’t, I will lay in bed all night thinking about it!

What inspired you to create Be Victorious Prep & The Bravado?

I was inspired to create Be Victorious Prep because I found that while I was improving each year in pageants, my peers were not. I was breaking into the top ten, then the top 5, and then winning, while others remained lost and had no guidance to move ahead. I wanted to share what I had learned over the years while competing, so I just started dropping kind words of advice…and the girls started winning. After a few girls, I realized that ‘hey, I might be good at this’! Then I started to put things together on my own – it was my success in pageants that taught me discipline, the value of hard work, and the power of focus, so I translated that into a business model: I wanted girls to be victorious in whatever they set their mind to, pageants or not – I wanted to help girls, just like myself, be victorious in everything they do. Soon after, I started branding myself and boom, here we are in 2015 with over 60 wins to the Be Victorious name.

Once I started to become involved in the coaching process, girls started to ask me for wardrobe advice. This advice included what they should wear to orientation to what they should wear in competition. I quickly realized that instead of having them shop on their own (and bring back the craziest things that I just made them return anyway), I would set up my own shop and provide exactly what was competition worthy and attention getting (in a positive way). My siblings and I now provide competition clothing, from gowns to suits to jewelry, and everyday boutique wear, for appearances, girls night out, and more (at The Bravado). Most specifically, I was inspired by the idea that if I wanted the girls to be victorious in everything they do, they had to look good doing it – dressing for success soon became part of our life.

Victory Mohamed - Be Victorious Feature

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

Mom: I think my mom is a giant. She came to this country when she was 17 and she quickly decided to work on losing her accent. She was driven to move her family forward – when her brothers and father were buying homes and apartments to fix and sell/rent, she was the one going to the library, asking questions, working to figure out how to do paperwork legally, traveling to courthouses and handling all official family matters, all before she was 21. To me, she is a prime example of ‘if you want something badly enough, you need to work hard and get it done’. From a very young age she taught me to set goals, weigh the pros and cons, make a list of how I was going to accomplish that goal and to work non-stop until I succeed. She is my rock, my soul, and the very fiber of my being.

Cheryl Wood: Words cannot express how Cheryl has influenced my life. I first met Cheryl when I had literally just started my entrepreneurial journey…and she was sort of starting her own journey with a tee shirt company as well. She spoke with such conviction about entrepreneurship, finding your passion and working it, and about the power of believing in yourself. She also talked about balancing motherhood with her dreams; something I was definitely thinking about for the future. She soon invited me to participate in a magazine with her and on a radio show with her – for once, my age did not matter to someone. She saw me for my work, my passion, and my abilities. She encouraged to me to think bigger and to make things happen. She probably doesn’t know it, but her charisma, passion, and social media posts invigorate me everyday!

Stephanie McMahon: For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a WWE wrestling fan. While this is not typical of a “pageant girl”, I have always admired how Stephanie approached being a woman in a man’s world. I’ve also admired that she allows her work to speak for itself – just because her parents own the company did not mean that she would not have to get a degree and work her way up in the company. It was her hard work and creative abilities that took the company from a household name here in the US and Canada to an international household name and respected brand. More specifically, she inspires me because of her ability to balance everything so well – she’s a mom, an entrepreneur, a wife, a TV villain and more; I find myself admiring her because I want to find the same balance in my own life and find the same success as well. She has created opportunities for herself and her company where many others did not see fit and thus, she has helped propel her company forward as a Special Olympics Ambassador, an anti-bullying organization, a pro-literacy organization and more. I admire her work, values, and ability to balance it all. She is my guide when people say “this is not your place” or “I do not see how this can fit”; she made it happen and so can I.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

You could be the youngest in the room, you could be the only woman in the room – it does not matter if you are prepared, have passion, and have the discipline to see something through. Work hard and never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something because you are a woman. Womanpower is indeed an amazing thing, never forget that. And please, when you recognize your own womanpower, do not take too long to turn around and empower others.

Be Victorious - feature

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

(Yikes…) I want to be the Executive Director of my own International Empowerment Academy. I want to empower women (and men) around the world to find their passions, to live it every single day, and to turn around and empower others as soon and as often as they can. I want to share the message of ‘be victorious in everything you do’ around the world because I believe that no one should limit themselves. I believe that no one should let what people say define them – you create your own definition of success, power, prestige, life…and being victorious. So…in five years, I expect to be well on the path of empowering others worldwide!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Jhéanell of Jolie Bloom & Belle Jhéanell

March 27, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

I’m always inspired by working women who are also mothers and wives. Juggling it all is not easy, but a #FearlessWoman gets it done! Jhéanell Adams is the creator of Jolie Bloom, an eco-luxe brand specializing in hand crafted beauty products that are simply divine! I’ve tried the Caribbean Coconut Body Scrub (review coming soon) and immediately fell in love! This working Mom is also the creative blogger behind Belle Jhéanell.

With a heart of gold, a strong business mind and a passion for beuaty, Jhéanell is definitely an entrepreneur on the rise. Enjoy her interview below and be inspired!

belle jheanell - feature

What’s a typical day for Jhéanell?

Morning: A typical day starts with me seeing my sister off to school and then trying to get as much work done as possible before my son wakes up. This usually consists of responding to emails, sending out tracking numbers or finishing up a blog post that I may have started the night before. Once my son is up, we shower, eat breakfast and usually he wants to play, cuddle or have me read books to him.

Afternoon: One a good day he’ll take his afternoon nap and I’ll try to get some blogging done or make products to fulfill orders for Jolie Bloom. If he doesn’t take a nap, I give him about an hour of tv time while I continue to work. Afterwards we do some learning activities and do a few educational sing a longs.

Late afternoon/Early Evening:  I leave to get my sister from school and drop Jolie Bloom packages off at the post office for delivery that have been packed the night before. If I happen to have a cute outfit, I’ll also ask my sister to photograph it for me during this time of the day for a Lookbook post on Belle Jheanell.com

Evening: Once we’re back home, I start dinner and check my sisters homework before we sit down to eat as a family. However, if I have a shift at my part time job, I make dinner and then run out for a couple hours.

Night: Once I return from work, my husband and I stay up packing boxes in preparation for me to ship them the following afternoon. If we don’t have any orders, I do research for upcoming blog posts before getting some “me time” (catching up on my favorite shows) after everyone goes to bed.

What inspired you to create Belle Jhéanell & Jolie Bloom?

I originally started blogging back in 2008 as a way to organize my wedding inspirations (pre-Pinterest days) and journal through the process. Once my wedding was over, I continued to use the space to document my life. Having been blogging for most of my adulthood,  I’ve shared many things from the preparation of my wedding, to life as a newlywed and my excitement after learning that I was going to be a mother for the first time.

Unfortunately, my daughter was born prematurely and passed away shortly thereafter. It was the hardest time of my life and through sharing my experience on my blog, I was able to gain a great addition to my already amazing support system. Thankfully, I went on to had my son but I felt as though my site had become somber as I’d been writing through my grief. I eventually decided to rebrand it as Belle Jheanell where I regularly share outfit posts as well as my knowledge of beauty and passion for natural living.

After gaining back my confidence and wanting to do something meaningful to honor my daughters short life, I then created Jolie Bloom which is a brand of eco luxury personal care products. Having gone through such a traumatic experience, I have to say that it feels amazing that so many people know Jolie’s story and understand how huge of a role she plays in my life although she’s not physically with us any longer.

Jolie Bloom

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My top 3 women inspirations are my mother, Oprah Winfrey and Myleik Teele. All of these women have been knocked down many times but have made the choice over and over to keep going.

My mother was the person who inspired me to become an entrepreneur after witnessing her from her own business during the earlier part of my childhood. She believes in me more than I believe in myself at time and is such a cheerleader for Jolie Bloom.

Oprah is self explanatory but the fact that a poor little girl from Mississippi has built such an a billionaire dollar empire is nothing short of incredible.

Myleik’s work ethic is unlike anything I’ve seen in a while. Having met her when Curlbox was only two months old and seeing where it is now is mind blowing!

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

“Leap and a net will appear”, it’s my favorite quote by John Burroughs . You don’t have to have every single detail in place to start your business. Do you research, get started and you’ll be surprised how things start to line up.

belle jheanell - jolie bloom

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I imagine that Jolie Bloom would have grown substantially and will be housed in headquarter facility containing our office, production and shipping space. I’d love to be a couple hundred retail stores around the world by then. My dream ever since I was a little girl has been to be an author, so I’d love to have at least two books published within the next 5 years. I haven’t shared this publicly as yet, but I’m currently working on my first children’s book.

As for Belle Jheanell, I still imagine that I’ll have it as a creative outlet and journal. Most importantly, I love that people go back in my archives and are able to see my growth and how I decided to use my pain to fuel my passions and help others.

In my personal life, I’d love to have another child or two by then. Ultimately, I see myself continuing to be family oriented while building my empire and growing even closer to God.

Keep Up With Jhéanell

#FearlessWoman Feature | Lacey of A Lacey Perspective

March 26, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

Being a blogger in the DMV, I’ve met many stylish and ambitious like-minded creatives. Lacey Faeh is one of those people. When I decided to start blogging I was beyond excited to join the DMV blogging group, CapFABB. Meeting Lacey, the co-founder of the group, was a joy. I admired she and her colleague for creating a group dedicated to bringing area bloggers/creatives together to “collaborate, learn and grow”.

As the years went on, I began to follow A Lacey Perspective and through her posts and attending the CapFABB meetups/classes, I found myself learning so much about both style and blogging. She’s an excellent content creator and has a knack for helping bloggers reach their full potential. I’m sure you’ll find her interview interesting and motivating. Enjoy!

A Lacey Perspective - Feature

What’s a typical day for Lacey?

There is no such thing as a typical day for me. From A Lacey Perspective to my consulting to CapFABB each day there is something new that I need to tackle. Most days start with a latte and reading through blogs. Followed by emails galore. Second half of my day is dedicated to my clients whether it is logo/site redesign, photography, meetings on site or digital strategy. The last steps of my is dedicated to my blog and CapFABB. Last but definitely not least… wine. Lots of wine.

What inspired you to create A Lacey Perspective, CapFABB & ALP Consulting?

The blog is about to hit its 5 year anniversary and I cannot believe it! I started the blog because I felt like DC needed help on the style front and I was in need of a place to feel creative back in my politico days.

CapFABB just turned 4 and we now have over 500 members! It is insane! Shameless plug… you should definitely join! CapFABB was something I felt the DC blogging community needed, a place where we can all come together, learn from one another and show the world that DC has style bloggers with unique voices.

ALP Consulting is my newest baby. Almost 3 years old and was created when I realized there are so many small businesses here in DC who don’t know of the power a social presence can have. I worked in the digital space in politics for over 5 years so my experience has translated beautifully to restaurants, malls and boutiques. One other arm of ALPC is helping bloggers make their blogs a business. This part is such a blast! I love brainstorming with clients about how to take their blog to the next level and share my experiences. Lastly, one of my favorite services, is styling. There is nothing better than helping a woman realize the potential in her closet or find a that perfect dress for an upcoming event.

A Lacey Perspective - Blog Feature

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mother for her strength. Michelle Obama for her perfect blending of fashion and leadership. Olivia Palmemo for her impeccable style.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Just jump! Whether you are looking to blog or start your own small business they only way to see if it will work is to give it a shot. So stop over analyzing all the ways it can go wrong and dive in head first!

A Lacey Perspective

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see ALPC growing to a medium size digital firm with clients of all varieties and sizes.

#FearlessWoman Feature | Dionne of Styled by Dionne

March 24, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing today’s #FearlessWoman on WNJ a time before. Dionne Dean is the brains and beauty behind Styled by Dionne and author of  ‘Make Your Closet Pay‘. Not only is her energy and smile infectious, but her wanderlust nature and passion for life is incredible. I admire her spirit, pay it forward mentality and above all, her tenacious work ethic. This thrift, vintage and “never pay retail” queen should definitely be on your radar, if she isn’t already. Enjoy her interview below; I’m sure you’ll be inspired to travel and live a fabulous life just as Dionne does!

10397017_813710242001732_2548099400086606762_o (2)

What’s a typical day for Dionne?

Is there such a thing as a “typical” day in the life of any entrepreneur, LOL! I wake around 4 or 5 to spend time in prayer. I find that if I don’t spend that time in prayer and meditation to get focused and centered on the purpose for my business, I’ll be rocked to and fro by the days events. Once the hubs is out the door, I head into my office and spend about an hour checking emails and social media. I work on getting all my eBay orders and thrift boxes together the night before so that I can be ready to hit the post office when it opens at 9:30. After the post office, I head to 3 or 4 thrift stores and am done by noon or 1 pm. If I have a client, I head to whichever store I’ve chosen for them an hour prior our appointment to set up their fitting room and alert the sales staff that I have a client coming. If not, I head home to upload items in eBay or spend time reaching out to potential clients.

Now, if’s it’s a morning when I have my ‘Good Morning Texas’ beauty segment, the day goes a bit different. I’m still up at 4 or 5, but I usually check on my models, go over my product details (pre-playing the segment in the bathroom mirror LOL) and selecting my outfit. I’ve tried getting my look together the night before, but I’m one of those people who has to see how I feel before I get dressed 😉

2. What inspired you to create Styled by Dionne & publish Make Your Closet Pay?

My undergraduate is in Clothing, Textiles and Merchandising and my goal was to become a buyer and travel the world purchasing beautiful clothing. However, after volunteering at various community agencies in Atlanta, I decided to switch gears. I moved to Chicago, completed an AmeriCorps Year of Service and got my Masters in Cultural and Educational Policy. I spent 6-7 years preparing high school, college-aged and graduate students for entry into the world of work and realized the one thing we didn’t spend enough time on was how to dress when you actually GOT the job. There was so much out there on interviewing skills and dressing for an interview, but nothing on building and maintaining your personal brand AT the job. So, I decided to launch a business styling new graduates, new entrepreneurs and basically anyone looking to re-brand themselves for promotion.

I published ‘Make Your Closet Pay‘ because I want people to help people get rid of the items their not wearing and reinvest that money into themselves, whether it be in paying off debt, going on that dream vacation or purchasing clothing that they WILL wear. I’ve had an eBay store since my early days in Atlanta and now that I use it to sell my thrifted items, I’ve used the profit to pay down debt, go home to London for 2 weeks and buy $45 Jimmy Choos!

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mommy. The older I get, the more I realize what an awesome woman my mother is. She was widowed at the age of 25 with 3 young children, in London, thousands of miles away from her family and friends in Jamaica and somehow just made it work. She met my dad in her late thirties and created this fabulosity that you see today 😉 But listening to her hard earned wisdom on life has made me a better wife and one day mother.

Violette Sproul, Founder of Femfessionals. I met her at a conference a few years back and was immediately in awe of her honesty when it came to managing business and life. I asked a question pertaining to timing and when to have children and she flat out told me, “There’s no good time…just do it. You’ll make it work somehow.” She’s been one of my mentors and sounding boards ever since.

My business coach, Kimberly Pitts is my idol. She is operates her business, marriage and motherhood in such excellence and is just an all around phenomenal woman. She is able to look at my business in such a different way and makes sure that I have all the tools necessary to be successful. She goes above and beyond what I pay her for because she believes in me understands that my success is her calling card. When I’m successful, SHE’s successful. Amazing woman

4. One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Go for it! I chose this road because I saw something missing in the marketplace. I believe the world is as nuts as it is because the people who are called to make the necessary changes are chained to the wrong job. If you have a desire to something, do it. The world needs your gifts, talents and abilities!

Feature - Styled By Dionne Dean

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I’ll be traveling the world with my husband and babies buying beautiful pieces for my online store. I’ll have a show produced by the Property Brothers where we go to run down stores and smelly thrift stores and turn them into high end boutiques (think the British show ‘Mary Portas-Queen of Shops). Probably have a daytime Emmy and be back home in South Florida with a condo on Biscayne. My heart’s desire is to be an ex-Pat and spend half the year in London or Dusseldorf and the other half in South Florida.

#FearlessWoman Feature | Ruby of Ruby Ella Photography + Brown Girl With A Camera

March 20, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

I met today’s #FearlessWoman back in college and to our surprise we reconnected, thanks to social media, a few months ago to work together on a project. Ruby Melton, the woman behind the lens, has quickly taken her love for photography and storytelling and created a business that’s thriving daily! Ruby’s images have been displayed on Travel Noire, Jetsether, and she’s been featured on Geotraveler’s Niche. Ruby has also founded Brown Girl with a Camera (#BGWAC) and Brown Guys with a Camera (#BGYWAC) in hopes to empower, “connect and celebrate both women and men of color photographers worldwide.”

From lifestyle, travel, head-shots, and more this Maryland native captures it all! Being able to tell a story through images is something I will forever be a fan of. Take a read below to find out even more about this Maryland based photographer and entrepreneur on a mission.

Ruby Ella Photography

What’s a typical day for Ruby?

A typical day starts out around 7 a.m., as my boyfriend is getting ready for work my son is either up or close to it. Once he’s wide awake, I clean and feed him and we watch some of his favorite shows together. Since I work from home and have my son during the day, I have to be very organized if I am to accomplish anything. I refer to my journal to see what’s on the agenda for the week and for the day and start hammering out each task. My son usually takes a nap right before noon and that gives me free time to answer emails, update my blog and post to social media. Once he’s wake I’m back on mommy duty until my boyfriend gets home from work. I get a lot of work done late at night.

What inspired you to create Ruby Ella Photography & @browngirlwithacamera ?

Ruby Ella Photography was born out of a nickname my volleyball coach gave me in college. One day she just started calling me Rubella, which is short for Ruby + Cinderella, and it caught on. Fast forward to when I was deciding on a name for my photography business, I thought it would be cool to use the nickname my coach gave me but add the “y” back to my first name. Thus, Ruby Ella Photography was born. I’ve always loved taking pictures and documenting parts of my life always appealed to me – this was way before there was a thing called social media. I knew it was time to step out on faith and start my own business when I was working on my own thing more than working on what I was getting paid to do.

Trust and believe in yourself and what you are setting out to achieve. – @THE_BGWAC

I created Brown Girl With A Camera within weeks of returning from a volunteer trip with Girls Going Global in Costa Rica. I accompanied the non-profit as a chaperon and photographer on their yearly trip. I’m a huge Instagram head and follow a lot of photography themed accounts. The more accounts I came across the more I saw the lack in diversity for those featured. I realized how cool would it be to create something just for women of color photographers. I wanted to give us a bigger voice, a space where we could be celebrated, inspired and uplifted. Since its inception we’ve hosted meet-ups in NYC, D.C., and Johannesburg, SA.

Ruby Ella Photography

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

Serena Williams is the epitome of what driven looks like. She has all of the traits that I want to embody, like discipline, focus and a great work ethic. Coupled with her raw talent she is a force to be reckoned with.

Evita Robinson, creator of Nomadness Travel Tribe. She’s created an astounding travel community that truly embodies the word family. She’s the definition of the woman who didn’t take no for an answer. I had the opportunity to do a short film where I followed her around for a day as she and her team were putting on their 3rd Year Tribe Anniversary party in NYC. It was an amazing experience!

Danielle Finney is an amazing natural light photographer out of D.C. I came to know of her last year after I created #BGWAC and I’ve been a fan ever since. She is where I’d like to be in 3 to 5 years. Very business savvy and her brand has truly become a staple.

@THE_BGWAC is a space where women of color photographers can be celebrated, inspired and uplifted.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Trust and believe in yourself and what you are setting out to achieve. The journey will have highs and lows and on the lows and that’s when you have to remember the most why you’re doing it in the first place.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would love to continue to make an impact as an advocate for women of color photographer’s through #BGWAC, expand to other platforms and collaborate with brands and organizations that are in line with our values. I have a huge heart for giving back and would like to help mentor the#BGWAC in the making. My goal is to be a go-to lifestyle and travel photographer and a public speaker, using my story to inspire women alike world wide.

Thrifted Style | Kimonos and Dresses

March 19, 2015 by Whitney 12 Comments

Remember my obsession with kimonos? Some things never change. 😉 Now that it’s getting warmer I’m more than ready to pull out my kimonos and get to styling! This floral thrifted gem is one of my favorites. I’ve had this kimono for years and despite the rips and tears, I’ve held onto it for dear life. I’ve sewn up the holes, cut one side to be even with the other side (that I ripped a while back), and to me it’s just as perfect when I purchased it.

Kimonos and Dresses

Dress + Kimono + Tote Bag: Thrifted, 2nd Avenue

Thrifted Outfit

The mustard color dress, also thrifted, is actually Asos brand. The stretchy material is to die for, but the versatility is what I really like. It’s one of those dresses that can easily be transitioned from season to season. Tights and boots make it perfect for winter, while bare legs and sandals make it work for the warmer months. Another good thing about this dress? The fit is a winner with hubby. He likes for me to show a little leg and curve every now and then. 😉

I jazzed up the outfit with a statement necklace and my cute gold flats. Adding the (thrifted) tote made this a perfect option for the work place. Because my work environment is more laid back, I don’t do the dresses and heels thing. However, a dress (and outfit) like this is perfect for those days I want to get a little fancy.

Thrifted Workwear

Necklace: Nordstrom Rack // Flats: Michael Kors, Nordstrom Rack // Watch + Earrings: Thrifted, 2nd Avenue

So tell me, do you have a clothing item that you just can’t get rid of? What are your thoughts on kimonos and dresses? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to keep up with me on social media. I’m always posting or saying something! Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Krystal of The Feisty House

March 17, 2015 by Whitney Leave a Comment

Today’s #FearlessWoman feature comes from the lifestyle blogger and budding entrepreneur, Krystal Scott. The author of The Feisty House lives with her husband and new baby girl Maya in New York. She’s been a virtual source of inspiration for me for a while now. Her lifestyle blog has several motivational posts, natural hair and makeup tips, thought provoking interviews and more.

What’s a typical day for Krystal?

My days are a bit insane! I’ve been trying to wake up earlier in the day (so I can exercise), but my average wake time is about 7:30 AM. Then I get ready for work, grab breakfast and pack a lunch. I try to be out the door by 9:00 AM. I arrive at work at 9:30 AM and I work nonstop until my lunch break. I use that time to check my blog emails, do a quick check-in on social media, etc. I schedule my blog posts, blog-related tweets and Facebook posts as well as my blog-related Instagrams because I don’t really have the time at work to do all of that.

I have been leaving work between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM, which is great. I head home and spend some time alone before I start dinner and do some chores. After dinner I’m usually blogging and checking email, and I do that between8:00 PM and 11:00 PM. I try to write two posts within that time, but some nights I only get to the post for the next day! Blogging and having a full-time job definitely isn’t easy, and I’m constantly adjusting my schedule so that I can blog and also have time for friends and family.

What inspired you to create The Feisty House?

I started The Feisty House in graduate school when I was learning about how to take care of my naturally kinky hair. I’d been natural my entire life (never used chemical straighteners or even hair dye), but I quickly learned that I was doing everything the wrong way! I used The Feisty House to share what I was learning about my hair with other women. Fast forward five years, and The Feisty House is much bigger than natural hair!

The blog has involved into a space where I discuss and share inspirations related to lifestyle (personal style, home life, beauty) and entrepreneurship (including my DREAM JOB Interviews with Black female entrepreneurs and blogging tips).

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

I could say my aunt and grandmothers and be done so easily! These women work so much. They’ve worked hard my entire life. It’s been amazing to see with my own eyes what women can do for themselves when they put their minds to it.

I’m also inspired by Arianna Huffington (I’m reading On Becoming Fearless for the second time this year), and all the entrepreneurs I’ve interviewed for The Feisty House. It’s amazing to learn from women who have looked fear in the face and started their own businesses (and become successful!) in spite of being afraid.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Share your stories. Because you have no idea how your experience is going to affect someone else. You may be just what another woman needs in order to make the leap into entrepreneurship. Those stories are so valuable and such an important source of strength for me and other women who are considering working for themselves.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’ll probably still be living in New York, but also living in either South Florida or Jamaica for half of the year. And I’ll be working for myself, FULL-TIME! The Lord has yet to reveal to me exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’m on the right track. I’m excited about the future!

Keep Up With Krystal
