Personal Style | Styling a Thrifted Blouse and Denim

September 21, 2016 by Whitney 14 Comments

When’s the last time you went thrifting? If I’m being honest, I haven’t (really) been thrifting in months. I know… Crazy, right? Well, that changed a few days ago. I had to urge to add some new pieces to my wardrobe for the fall, so I figured a quick thrift store trip wouldn’t hurt. 7 items and a few dollars later, I walked out with this sheer animal print thrifted blouse and a few other items. Mission accomplished!

Although this thrifted blouse is sheer, it’s still great for fall styling. It’s the perfect layering piece, which is why I decided to layer it over a black bodysuit. I’m all about comfort and style whenever I’m figuring out what to wear, but especially when it comes to work-wear. I’m often running errands or out and about during the day so I like to look presentable and chic, without compromising my comfort.

You can still wear your sheer pieces in the fall. They’re great layering pieces! #wnjstyle

When styling a piece like this thrifted blouse, it’s important to remember to wear something fitted at the bottom. Because the blouse is flowy and over-sized, a fitted or slim pair of pants/denim helps balance out the look. Staying in the neutral family, I topped off the outfit with a pair of nude flats and one of my favorite purses. The subtle gold tones in the purse bring out my gold necklace and studs.

Personal Style | Minimal Styling with an Asos Kimono

September 14, 2016 by Whitney 12 Comments

When it comes to personal style, I’m all about no-fuss, yet chic, outfits. Throwing my braids in a bun, wearing a pair of leggings, a kimono and a pair of big hoops is “my thing”. It’s the kind of look that’s perfect for someone trying to achieve a minimal sense of style. You maybe looking at this outfit and thinking, “is she wearing another kimono?!”  I’m guilty. But this time it’s a kimono from the men’s section. That counts for something, right?

So, how did I end up shopping in the men’s section? After seeing fellow Lifestyle Blogger Sam – AKA my kindred spirit – style a black and white men’s kimono, I had to know where I could find it! I frantically searched the ASOS website, found it in the men’s section, yet fell in love with the simplicity and versatility of the kimono worn in this post. I knew that I’d get more wear out of a solid kimono, so I opted to purchase this one instead.

Ladies, don’t be afraid to shop in the men’s section for certain wardrobe items! #wnjstyle

The material of the kimono is heavy enough to be worn throughout the fall and versatile enough to be styled multiple times. It can easily be styled over a casual dress, a tank top, or a light weight t-shirt as shown in this look. This minimal style purchase is certainly one I do not regret.

Personal Style | Styling a Kimono and a Dress…Again

July 6, 2016 by Whitney 23 Comments

One wardrobe item that will forever have a place in my closet is the kimono. I absolutely love styling them all year! My collection of kimonos are the most versatile and easy to wear pieces in my closet. They’re perfect to throw on over a sleeveless dress, which is exactly how I styled the kimono in today’s outfit. I had a feeling I’d get cold during a night out with hubs, so I grabbed one of my favorite kimonos and my outfit was complete!

It’s no wonder my love for kimonos runs deep; I’m such a fan of lightweight, no-fuss and flowy clothing, especially during the warmer months. I usually thrift them, but there are times I find quality and unique ones at department stores. I purchased this one at Nordstrom Rack a while back and since then, I’ve seen them sold pretty much everywhere.  Chances are if you’re on the hunt for a kimono this season, you’ll definitely find one!

Personal Style | Wearing Stripes and Sweatpants

May 25, 2016 by Whitney 16 Comments

For the past several weeks, wearing stripes and sweatpants seems to be a reoccurring theme. I’m not talking about the drab and baggy grey sweatpants with the drawstring, although I do wear those around the house to clean sometimes. I’m talking about the straight-leg, comfy and flattering pants made of sweatpants material. You know, the ones I’ve worn several times here on the blog. Yep, those sweatpants.

These sweatpants are heaven-sent and they’re easily my favorite pair to date. The fact that their straight-leg makes them extremely flattering and easy to style with just about any top. However, of all the times I’ve worn these pants, styling them with a tunic (or other loose fitting tops) is my favorite. I think you get the picture – I love styling these pants! Now let’s talk about my glorious tunic…

Don’t let stripes scare you. Figure out the best kind of stripes for your body type and rock it!

The whole “plus size girls shouldn’t wear stripes” thing doesn’t phase me. After learning what kind of stripes work for my body type, I haven’t looked back. Vertical stripes, preferably vertically striped tunics, seem to be my best bet. Just like the sweatpants, I’ve worn this tunic several times. It’s flowy nature and lightweight material makes it the perfect top to wear during the warmer months.

Personal Style | 5 Winter Wardrobe Must Haves from Nordstrom

February 10, 2016 by Whitney 7 Comments

This winter weather will be around for a while longer and I think my wardrobe could use a few more items to help get me through. Of course I’ve been browsing the Nordstrom website and I found a few items that I’d love to add to my minimal and functional wardrobe. I’m in the process of making my current wardrobe even more minimal and these 5 items will be great additions. Here are my 5 Winter Wardrobe Must Haves from Nordstrom.

Get Ready for 2016 (2)

1. New Balance Running Sneakers | I’ve become a lot more active since the New Year and because of this, I’m in need of a new pair of running shoes. I do have a pair that I use for indoor activity, and to style when wearing casual outfits. But I don’t have a pair specifically for running/walking. These pair of New Balance sneakers below are not only cute, but perfect for my new found active lifestyle.

2. Melissa McCarthy Long Grey Cardigan | I love wearing long (and shorter) cardigans to work, as well as during the weekends. This Melissa McCarthy option is perfect for work and play. The color is great, the material is soft and I’m sure it will be flattering on my figure.

3. Faux Leather Handbag | I haven’t purchased a black handbag in a while and this faux leather choice seems big enough to house all my purse necessities. It seems large enough to carry to work also, so that’s a plus. I like the subtle design on the front and the detailing on the sides as well.

4. City Chic Skinny Ankle Length Denim | As mentioned in this post, I’m a huge fan of straight leg/skinny ankle length denim. The fit does wonders for my shape! This particular City Chic pair has been in my cart for a few weeks, so I think I need to make the purchase ASAP. I can wear these all year and the styling options are endless!

5. Sejour Leather Jacket | The last time I had a sleek leather jacket was during my college days, thanks to my mom. I’m definitely in need of a lightweight leather jacket. I would go for the faux option, but the leather jacket I had in the past seemed to last for years. Personally a leather option seems more durable. Purchasing this Sejour jacket in either black or grey would enhance my wardrobe, for sure!

Personal Style | Maxi Dress and Sneakers

February 9, 2016 by Whitney 4 Comments

For the past few weeks I’ve been gravitating towards sneakers. It’s not surprise really, since I’m already a huge fan of sneakers. So whenever I get the chance to style a pair, I’m a happy girl! These grey Pumas were a Christmas gift from hubs. They were the perfect addition to my maxi dress and sneakers outfit. I decided to wear this comfy and warm ensemble a few Sunday’s ago to church. I’d usually feel weird wearing sneakers to church, but not at Bridgeway. Being able to dress comfortably, yet still presentable, at our church is something I truly appreciate.

Outfit - Maxi Dress and Sneakers

Wearing sneakers with a dress is something I do more in the summertime, but I’m realizing this combo can work all year! Wearing a maxi dress and sneakers adds a nice contrast. You can wear a dress with heels anytime. Why not have fun and switch it up a bit by adding your favorite pair of stylish sneakers to the look? A quick shoe change is just one more way you can stretch and maximize your wardrobe.

Stretch your wardrobe – try a pair of stylish sneakers with a casual maxi dress. #wnjstyle

Personal Style | Casual Date Night Outfit

February 2, 2016 by Whitney 12 Comments

I’m a strong believer in scheduling date nights with my husband. Be it a casual date at the Shake Shack or a fancy planned dinner at the Standford Grill, date nights are a must. Due to the weather hubs and I haven’t been able to get out as much as we usually do, but we did get a chance to grab lunch last week during one of our off days, thanks to the snow storm. Needless to say I was thrilled!

When getting dressed for a casual date night I like to keep things simple and cute, which is not much different from my normal outfit choices. On date nights I know hubs likes to see me wear certain denim styles, as well as certain tops – preferably sheer. I do my best to dress the part, while staying true to my personal style.  Therefore, I usually gravitate towards the following items:

  • A pair of cute flats
  • Tight, yet comfy, pair of denim
  • A red lip
  • Big Earrings
  • Big Hair/Wig (or a stylish hat/beanie)

Despite the snow on the ground, I still decided to go for it and wear flats and ankle length denim. On that day the temps were a bit higher, so it worked. Plus I love how these pants fit. They hug my curves in just the right places and they seem to never not fit, if that makes any sense. So yea, I pretty much wear them as often as I can. I actually prefer ankle length denim/pants because they’re perfect for year round styling. I can easily tuck them into a pair of boots if it’s cold or wear them with flats or a pair of sneakers when it’s warmer.

Ankle length denim and pants are definitely wardrobe staples. They can be worn any season! #wnjstyle

Personal Style | 2015 Personal Style Recap

December 21, 2015 by Whitney 31 Comments

Happy Monday! I wasn’t going to post again until next year, however there are still a few posts I want to share; my 2015 Personal Style Recap is one of them. This year I’ve really come into my own in more ways than one, but especially style-wise. I have never been more comfortable in my own skin or with my personal style choices. I’ve searched, tried and experimented with several styles (stores, brands and designers) and I’ve finally figured out what works for me. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite outfits from 2015.

Personal Style 2015

Cape & Leggings // 80’s Inspired // Thrifted Kimono

Personal Style - 2015

Thrifted Menswear // Crazy Pants // Wearable Art

On my 2015 vision board I pinned a few images that reminded me to explore and express my personal style. As a budding entrepreneur, blogger and new wife, defining my personal style has been very important to my personal development. I wanted to be sure I was purchasing clothing that fit my lifestyle, not a trend. I wanted to be happy with my outer appearance just as I was with my inner self. No matter how you try to spin it, your inner and outer go hand in hand. If you look good and dress for yourself, you feel great on the inside.

Figuring out your personal style makes you feel great on the outside AND on the inside! #wnjstyle

Comfort, practicality, chic and stylish are the words that come to mind when look back at my 2015 style. I also realize that I’m a fan of casual wear, with a stylish twist. Comfy flats, beanies, hats, bold accessories, flowy clothing and neutral colors are definitely my thing!

Being confident with your outer appearance is just as important as what’s inside. #wnjstyle
