#WNJBlogs | 5 Things You Need to be Taken Seriously as a Blogger

April 29, 2015 by Whitney 20 Comments

When it comes to blogging I’ve learned a lot over the years. While I thoroughly enjoy the art of blogging, it’s no secret that it takes a lot to be taken seriously as a blogger. If you have the right tools and remain consistent, blogging can easily become your side hustle and possibly your full-time career. Sound like something you might be interested in? Check out 5 blogging must-haves you need to be taken seriously as a blogger.

blogging must haves

1. Professional Headshots | These are a must! Professional headshots are great to have for several reasons. If you’re being featured on other sites and need a photo to accompany the content, use your headshot. If you’re planning to present at an event or if you need to create an event flyer/announcement, use your headshot. It’s also nice to have an updated headshot to in your About Me section. You can also use the shot for your social media pages. Doing this instantly makes you appear more professional.

2. Long & Short Bio | I’ve been asked several times for a bio and as of this year, I’m happy to say I have 2 on deck! It’s nice to have 2 to choose from because there may be times you’re asked for only 2-3 sentences about yourself. In this instance a short bio is perfect. If you’re asked for a full bio the longer one, of course, is the way to go. Keep in mind that the person asking for your bio may chop it up and only use what they want. It’s all good; you still gave them what they asked for. Lastly, be sure to keep your bio updated. Just like a resume, read over and add (or take out) certain information to keep it relevant.

Be taken seriously as a blogger with these 5 must-have tools! #wnjblogs

3. Reliable Camera | If the bulk of your posts include pictures, a reliable camera is a necessity. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive camera and you don’t have to be a genius to figure out how to use it. Simply use your resources. Head to YouTube and search for “how to” videos to learn how to use the camera you own. You can also ask around to see if your peers can give you tips and pointers on how to use the camera. Knowing the basic functions is really all you need. Trust me, you’ll figure out the rest as you go along.

4. Clean & Simple Website | I’ve always been drawn to clean and simple websites. The easier is it for me to navigate the more I’ll come back. If you’re just getting started and have a limited budget, there are tons of free templates to choose from. I used a few free WordPress templates before I hired Her Name is Kim. If you’re not into the DIY themes and have the funds, hire a designer. Not sure who to hire? Do your research and ask around. Compare prices, check the designer’s client portfolio and figure out what it is you really want. Keep in mind that when hiring a professional, it may cost more than you expected. But trust me when I tell you, you get what you pay for.

5. Business Cards | Your business card is your mini resume. The information provided must be accurate and spelled correctly. Keep the design simple and clean, just like your website should be. Also, don’t be scared to use your professional headshot on the card. Including this is a great way to set you apart from your peers. A few other ways to make your business card stand out is to create vertical cards, upgrade to a thicker paper quality, or add a quote or a short mission statement. To keep your business cards clutter free, order double sided cards.

So tell me, what do you think about these basic blogging must haves? What do you have to add? Let me know!

As always thanks for reading! If you have any questions or tips, leave them below or feel free to contact me. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Style | Styling a Vintage Dress + a Style Linkup

April 27, 2015 by Whitney 39 Comments

It’s been while since I’ve purchased a vintage dress, but there was something about this black and white floral number that caught my eye. At first glance, I thought it was more of a moo-moo than a dress. I still think that actually, lol. I mean let’s be honest, styling a vintage dress can be tough. Nonetheless I threw it in the cart, determined to make it work.

When I got it home, I tried on the dress (again) and wasn’t all that impressed to be honest. But I figured adding a pair of heels and a statement jewelry piece would make this moo moo fly! I like patterns, especially floral and animal print, bt I’m not one to style an item like this. The dress has a lot going on, but that’s what’s fun about fashion. You can make pieces fun by adding your own personal touches  here and there.

Hiring a seasmstress to recreate certain wardrobe itmes is a must! #wnjstyle

I decided to wear this outfit to dinner with hubby one night. It was fun to wear, I was comfortable in it, and he thought I looked lovely. Works for me! However the next time I style this piece I’ll probably add a belt. This will give the dress a different shape. I’m also toying with the idea of making the dress into a top/tunic. Of course I’d take it to my seamstress. A trusty seamstress is a must for recreating pieces like this!

#WNJTravels | Home 2 Suites by Hilton, Dover DE

April 15, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

Last month hubby and I traveled to Dover, Delaware to visit his family. Being the hospitality expert and professional he is, I usually leave the hotel accommodations to the him. For this trip, he planned for us to stay at the new Home 2 Suites by Hilton and I was really impressed. Not only was the hotel clean, but the staff was friendly, helpful and very accommodating.

Only a few miles from Dover Downs Casino, the hotel is located right on DuPont Highway. I immediately got a modern and eco-friendly feeling when we arrived. The front desk area and lobby was clean, bright and inviting. The front desk agent let us know that breakfast and WiFi was complimentary and that each room was a suite with a full kitchenette. We didn’t get a chance to go for a swim, but the hotel also has an indoor saline pool and a gym.

The next time you’re in Delaware, be sure to stay at the @Home2Suites in Dover! #wnjtravels

Entering the suite was delightful as well. I was intrigued with the wall paper, room decor and cleanliness of the rooms. I also liked the separation of the bedroom and living area. There was a sturdy curtain-like divider hanging from the ceiling that separated the bed from the lounge area – a perfect feature for families with smaller children. Speaking of the bed, let’s just say I sunk into the covers and fluffy pillows and fell asleep without hesitation. The desk area was spacious enough for a laptop and mini work station setup; another bonus and great for those guests traveling for work.

So tell me, have you stayed at a Home 2 Suites by Hilton before? What do you think about the pics and review? Let me know!

All in all, the trip itself was enjoyable and the hotel stay was wonderful. There’s no place like home, but staying somewhere like Home 2 Suites made me feel comfortable and “at home like”. With the mini kitchenette, room divider and other accommodations I would suggest this hotel brand to those who want that home-like feeling while traveling. I’m sure you’ll love it! Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Event Recap | Spring Fashion Trends at Macy’s Destination Spring Event

April 14, 2015 by Whitney 12 Comments

Spring fashion trends have arrived at Macy’s! I had the pleasure of attending Macy’s Style Destination Spring event last Thursday in D.C. The style event, hosted by D.C. bloggers Fashionably Broke and Style MBA, served up much style inspiration for the season. Attendees sat and watched the top trends grace the stage and runway. Some of the trends included fringe, festival wear, sporty chic, maxi dresses and colorful/bold prints.

There were several looks, styled by both DC blogger hosts, that caught my eye. The dresses and jumpsuits were among my favorite looks; very springy, comfortable and lightweight. I also swooned over the accessoriesThe jewelry and handbags, all available at Macy’s, were great picks!

Of course an event wouldn’t be complete without cute snacks, pretty drinks, stylish bloggers and music. I’m pleased to say Macy’s delivered just that! I mixed and mingled on in the Women’s Department throughout the event and had a great time! The mini cheesecake and grilled cheese sandwiches were my favorite! Another favorite moment was hanging with fellow DMV blogger and friend, Vivi. When we go to an event together, it’s always a good time.

Personal Style | Easter in Dress Barn + a Style Linkup

April 6, 2015 by Whitney 76 Comments

Hello there, friends! I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. I spent most of mine spring cleaning and hanging with family. After heading to church for an amazing Easter service, hubby and I went for a walk around our neighborhood. We met my family for dinner around 4, then headed back home to watch Black Girls Rock. Did you catch the show on BET? Talk about inspirational!

Moving onto today’s outfit, I must give a shout out to my “Easter Outfit”. I mean this Dress Barn dress has been hanging in my closet for months. It’s about 2 years old and I purchased it while in Delaware at the Dress Barn outlet. I was searching for work clothes and hubby liked the color and style of the dress. Reluctant to even stop in the store, I finally agreed to try it on. Needless to say, I loved it! The fit was perfection, the color was indeed gorgeous, and the material was forgiving.

I’ve worn the dress a few times to work (here) and church, but it ended up getting lost in my closet. Thanks to my spring cleaning this weekend, I found it and rekindled my affection for this pretty frock. I knew it’d be perfect for Easter and adding my floral flats was the icing on the cake. I could have worn my nude heels, but I decided to add a some color. I love a good floral print, so the flats were a must!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Marie of The Curvy Fashionista

March 31, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Today is the last day of my #FearlessWoman series. It’s been such a joy introducing you to 9 fearless, dynamic and inspirational women who have and continue to inspire me daily. My final feature is none other than the plus size blogging diva and mogul in the making, Marie Denee.

Founder of The Curvy Fashionista, this Atlanta based full-time blogger is a go-getter, a patient mentor, and genuinely sweet person. Marie is a girl’s girl and strongly believes in girl power and women empowerment. She wants to see us all win! Her authenticity, drive, and confidence serves as inspiration to many and it’s my honor to share her interview today. Enjoy and thank you for embracing this series in honor of Women’s History Month.

Marie Denee - The Curvy Fashionista

What’s a typical day for Marie?

Being a full time blogger is nowhere near as glam as it may seem! LOL Most of the time, I am at home, in my scarf, with some type of maxi dress on! Bra definitely off! I am glued to my desk, researching, writing, strategizing, and plotting! There is hardly any off time for me! Although I am trying to get better at leaving the office before 7 pm! LOL I try!

But my day? I am usually (or I do try) to be up by 7 a.m. and checking my posts to see if it went live as scheduled, go into promo mode, then I check my emails! I probably have a few calls scheduled for the day. From there it is a toss up! Depending on what is trending on social, what I have planned for the week, each day is a new one! I kind of have learned to love that.

What inspired you to create The Curvy Fashionista?

It was actually random. I started it with a completely different goal in mind. I just finished my MBA in Marketing and just KNEW I was going to have a physical store and work it out! Well, with various turns of events, I launched a very short lived online store, and then my blog started to take off! Over the years, it has evolved into its own, and I have been along for the ride! Talk about a walk of faith. When I lost my job, I dove head first into growing it, not knowing where it would lead me… from there, it has become a business, an entity, a community, a destination! I am grateful for this!

The Curvy Fashionista - Marie

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non famous, and why?

Three? You know, this is hard to answer, only because I pull inspiration from sooo many women- known and unknown, family and friends, mentors and new women on the scene! I would have to say that what they all have in common is moxie, drive, and some form of strength and the audacity to chase their dreams or persevere through life’s challenges! THIS is what inspires and drives me. I love networking and supporting other women- it is sooo awesome and inspiring to find women who make it work! They motivate me to do the same!

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Find your own path/lane/purpose and do not look to others to compare, check for, or to imitate. We all have our own path, purpose, and walk. We also do not know what they are dealing with and have struggled through to get to where they are. Nor does anyone know YOUR story. While things may look ro seem to be soooo fabulous on the outside, they could be dealing with things and keeping a brave face. Also, checking for others is a waste of time and energy that you can be using to build your own dream and empire! When you learn this, supporting others, helping others, and mentoring others comes easily and without pause!

Marie Denee The Curvy Fashionista

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

You know what? I have a few ideas and goals around that, but God willing, I see myself and my brand growing to levels I have dreamt. I see my personal love life develop into something tangible and exciting! I have buried and busied myself in my work that now, I am ready for love and life and fun, in different ways. So honestly, that is something I find myself thinking about a lot! Who knows where the brand will be! I have plans, but I have learned that when man plans, God laughs… so who knows! LOL.

Keep Up With Marie
