#WNJBeauty | My Current Favorite Beauty Products + 3 Beauty Secrets

August 20, 2015 by Whitney 1 Comment

I’ve been a fan of beauty products and beauty samples since I was a teen. I remember going to the beauty counters at department stores with my mom and grandmother and spritzing amazing smelling perfume on my wrists. I also enjoyed reading beauty magazines and seeing the latest beauty products to try. Not much has changed in my late 20’s; I’m still a beauty product junkie and I LOVE to try new (and safe) products. I’ve also learned a few beauty tips along the way, so today I’m excited to share both my current beauty product favorites and a few quick beauty secrets.

Current Beauty Product Favorites

  • Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub
    • I use this scrub wash every night and the small micro-beads really scrub away the dirt and grime from the day. The beads are not as harsh as I thought, which is why I’ve been using it each night. My skin feels soft and looks a lot brighter because of it.  (Target)
  • Organic Surge Refreshing Face Wash
    • I was looking for a new (and organic) daily face wash and while shopping at TJMaxx one day, I came across this product. After I read the ingredients and saw that the consistency was like a serum, I figured I’d give it a try. It’s been great and I love the way my face feels after each use. The product isn’t oily or greasy and it leaves the skin supple and really hydrated! (TJMaxx)
  • Clean & Clear Deep Cleaning Toner
    • I usually use the Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Toner but for some reason, I couldn’t find it last time I went to the store. So I opted for this brand and so far, so good. It does the job, making my skin brighter and the dark spots less noticeable. Not sure I’ll purchase it again because it does sting a little with each use. But it’s not unbearable and doesn’t damage my skin. I just prefer  the Witch Hazel, but this is an OK alternative. (Target)
The perfect year-round beauty products! #wnjbeauty

  • Biossance Drops
    • These drops were sent to me by the actual Biossance team. I am so grateful because since I’ve been using the drops (day and night) my skin has been LOVING it! I also put a few drops on my neck and after I rub it in, my skin is silky smooth and the complexion is ultra radiant! I’ll be posting a full review of the product next week, but I had to add it to my list because it’s been a lifesaver! (Biossance)
  • Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream
    • My mom has been an Olay fan for years so when she suggested this moisterizing face cream, I knew I had to try it. The bottle is very small, but I’ve learned that a small about on my face and neck day and night goes a long way. I love the smell of the product and the fact that it’s non-sticky is a plus! My complexion glows and the dark spots have continued to fade. I’ll definitely be purchasing again! (Target)
  • Glam Glow Tinglexfoliant Treatment Mask
    • When I have a break out I reach for this and it literally works like magic! When I put the mask on my blemish/breakout, it’s literally minimized within 24-hours. Now this mask is strong and has a strong odor, but it works! I use it sparingly and only on the areas needed. A little bit of this goes a long way as well. (Sephora)

Beauty Products

As far as my quick beauty tips, I’ve got 3:

  • Wash your face every night, every if you’re tired. Nobody wants to go to bed with gunk and grime on their face, right? Even if you’re dead tired, wash that face or at least use a makeup/cleansing wipe to get off all the dirt and impurities. Your skin will thank you!
  • Use a mask at least once a week (or at least once every 2 weeks). Masking helps deep clean your face. Even if you don’t want to mask your entire face, try sections. It’s a great way to “reset” your skin. Masks can help eliminate impurities from the skin, tighten and even tone!
  • Drink lots of water! I’ve never been one to shy away from water, but over the course of my late 20’s I’ve been increasing my H2O intake. It clears up acne, makes your skin less dull and dry, and does wonders for hydrating your skin. Who doesn’t want those amazing benefits??

Social Media | Why You Shouldn’t Follow Everyone on Social Media

August 14, 2015 by Whitney 19 Comments

Lately, I’ve been really paying attention to who I follow on social media. I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t make sense to follow everyone on every platform. There are very few people I choose to follow on multiple outlets. Nothing personal, it’s just my preference. It’s simple; I like to follow people who are positive, encouraging (without being preachy or redundant) stylish and helpful. If you can give me that on all platforms, great! If not, I’ll pick the platform that inspires me most and follow there. That being said, here are 3 reasons you don’t need to follow everyone everywhere.

d (2)

1. It can be overwhelming. Have you ever followed someone who posts the same images and posts, 24-7, on every outlet?? The redundancy is a lot and while some people prefer that posting tactic, I’m not a fan. I like pictures and quotes, but not the same ones on every social media outlet. Pay attention to the posting patterns of those you follow and decide which outlet you can “deal with”.

2. It can become a distraction. Following someone everywhere can be a bit distracting. Recently I started noticing that I was missing out on some pretty good posts/announcements on Twitter. After sifting through my news feed, I saw there was a lot of “fluff” on my feed. That was causing a distraction and at the end of the day, I was missing out on some pretty helpful content. Check your feed and be sure you’re not being distracting and missing out on valuable content.

3. Every social media outlet has a purpose. I like Instagram for visuals, Twitter for conversation/engaging, Facebook for a little bit of everything, Pinterest for a recipe, home decor, and #OOTD ideas/pics, and Periscope for live interaction. Those who use each outlet “the right way”, I appreciate. Decide what you like to see from those you follow and pick your favorite way to follow.

3 Reasons You Don’t Need to Follow Everyone Everywhere on Social Media #socialmedia

So tell me, do you follow everyone everywhere on social media? If so, why or why not? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by and as always, feel free to keep up with me this weekend on social media. You don’t have to follow everywhere though, LOL! Pick your fave outlet and I’ll be there. Have a wonderful weekend and until Monday, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Lifestyle | Downsizing + Affordable Home Decor

July 21, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

Darrius and I couldn’t be more excited about our upcoming move! After several conversations, we finally decided that downsizing to a smaller apartment is the smartest option for us right now. When we first got married, I was gung ho about having a two bedroom apartment; after all, I needed that extra bedroom for office space. After two years I started to realize that I really wasn’t using the 2nd bedroom as an office, at all. Instead, hubs uses the room to iron his clothes for work in the morning. I store a few things in there, mostly clothes,  but it’s just not the best use of the space. Recently we’ve vowed to only pay for space that we know we’re going to use. Downsizing to a one bedroom was our final decision. So what better time to start searching for affordable home décor items, right?

We also have plans to move into a home in the next 3-4 years and to put it simply, the amount we’re paying now will not allow us to save as much as we need to buy a home within that timeframe. So the decision to downsize and get serious about saving is where we are. Needless to say, I’ve been excited to start apartment shopping, just for a few items. We’re blessed to have the big items already, but bathroom accessories, kitchen needs and a few other odds and ends are needed. Therefore, I’ve been browsing and shopping for affordable home decor items and H&M was my first stop.

I decided H&M was a good start because of the affordable price points and great selections. We’ve scored affordable home decor items that are chic, minimal in design, and functional. The items we’ve picked for came to $27.98; not bad, huh?! Of course, this is just the beginning, but it’s a good start.

Home decor should be affordable; no need to break the bank. #wnjhome

We’re also looking at H&M for bathroom towels and rugs, a shower curtain, and possibly a duvet/fancy quilt. The key is to shop H&M’s home décor sale section; they’re deals are sometimes unbeatable and the quality is superb. If you’re in need of simple, minimally designed home décor items, H&M is a great starting place.

So tell me, where do you shop for affordable home décor items? Do you like our picks from H&M? Let me know!

I’m really excited about the process and thankfully, Darrius is getting excited too. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

#WNJEats | 5 Must Visit Restaurants in Columbia, MD

July 17, 2015 by Whitney Leave a Comment

This summer I promised to get out and explore Columbia, MD. Of course this means visiting the best restaurants the county has to offer. Well, I’ve been doing just that and today I want to share the 5 must visit restaurants in Columbia, MD. I know some of you may not reside in Columbia, or even the DMV. But if you find yourself in the area this summer, definitely check out these 5 hot spots for a good meal!

Resturants in Columbia, MD

1. Sushi Nari. This sushi resturant is located in Kings Contrivence shopping center and lucky for us, it’s in walking distance from our apartment! Their edamame and cinnamon tea is divine and the prices are very reasonable. My favorite roll is the Creamy Crab Lover and the Smoking Philly. It’s a small and quaint Resturant with friendly workers. If you don’t want to dine in, call in your order for takeout! I think hubby and I eat here at least twice a month!

2. Cheeburger Cheeburger. If you’re in the mood for a burger and an amazing shake, head to Cheeburger Cheeburger. This is the perfect place for late night burger runs and they’re fried pickles are the best! You can also order online to takeout and at certain locations, they deliver.

3. El Azteca (Clarksville). My mom and little sister put me and hubby on to this authentic Mexican Resturant. We recently at here for date night and the chicken quesadillas and fresh guacamole hit the spot! The price points are great and I really appreciate the family-like environment.

4. The Melting Pot. I’ve been dying to try this place since moving to Columbia and on little sis’ 13th birthday, I finally got my chance! The experience was SO much fun and the food, delicious. It’s a place for couples and families; the experience of cooking and dipping your own entrees is more fun when you’re with a group. The meals can be more in the pricey side, but it’s the perfect location/experience for a party or gathering!

5. Stanford Grill. I LOVE this place! They have the best salmon, Mac n Cheese and the bread pudding is to die for. It’s another great resturant for date night, couples night, or even a family get together. I’ve been dining here for years and I haven’t been disappointed once. The price points are higher, but trust me when I say it’s worth every penny. If you want splurge and treat yourself to a good meal, head to Standford Grill. You’ll thank me later!

So tell me, what are some of your favorite restaurants in Columbia Maryland? What are some of your favorite restaurants in general; I travel often? Let me know!

Thanks for reading and commenting. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Lifestyle | 5 Things Dad Taught Me

June 22, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

Happy Monday, everyone! This weekend was a great one, but the highlight was spending Sunday afternoon/evening with my Dad. The family headed over for dinner and game night and of course, we had a ball! I don’t just celebrate my Dad on Father’s Day, but having a special day set aside to do so is such a treat. Watching him enjoy his children and family really made my day. My Dad is an easy going guy; very even tempered, patient, and extremely hard working. He’s also the sweetest man I know and has taught me what to look expect from a husband. Being a man, it’s OK to be tough. But having and allowing your sweet and gentle side come across from time to time is important too.

I’m very thankful for my Dad’s tough and gentle nature. I remember living with my parents while in college; every morning Dad came in before leaving for work to say good morning and kiss me on the forehead goodbye. Some mornings I’d be like, for real tho?! Lol…but I appreciated it so much and I know that he has and will always care. Sure, I get a good morning kiss and hello from hubs every morning, but I do miss my Dad in the morning every now and then. I could go on and on sharing memories and lessons, but here are the top 5 things Dad taught me.

5 Things Dad Taught Me

1. Dare to be Different. Following the crowd has never been my style, and I get that from my Dad. In high school he drilled this in my head and although I didn’t always get it then, now I do. And I’m so glad I’m a traveler of the road less traveled. Not only has it gotten me pretty far in life, but it’s also made me a wiser person.

2. Raise Your Hand. This one is pretty simple, yet something I’m still learning to do. My Dad (and Mom) have always been there for me and have provided me with whatever I need to succeed. However, at times I find it difficult to ask for help. Especially from my parents. I think sometimes I want to be so strong and handle everything on my own that I forget that having parents is a blessing. They’re there to help and make life a little easier. Of course I’d never take advantage of them, but when I need help (with anything) I know I can raise my hand and ask. I may not get the exact help I want, but I always get the help I need.

3. If it Makes You Happy, Do it. Over the past few years there have been a few tough decisions I’ve made and thanks to my Dad, I was able to make them. I sometimes find myself concerned with what others may think or how they may feel about certain decisions. However thanks to my Dad, I have learned that I have to make me happy first. I have to live with the decisions I make. And as long as I’m not hurting anybody, doing what’s best for me is the best option. Period.

5 Things Dad Taught Me

4. Be Consistent. My Dad is the most constant person I know. Like, for real. He’s been the same kind, gentle, patient, yet strong man ever since I can remember. He’s also always worked hard and provided his family with the best. The older I get, I’ve learned that being consistent is something rare these days. While this may be true, being consistent never goes out of style. Just ask my Dad.

5. Enjoy Life. As hard as he works, my Dad enjoys life. He enjoys traveling, getting a relaxing manicure and pedicure (my Dad stays fresh), and just relaxing and chilling at home. I’ve learned that life gets busy and life is too short not to enjoy it. Vacations, staycations and moments to woo-shah are key to staying happy…and living a better quality of life.

So tell me, what has your Dad taught you? Let me know!

I’ll be resuming the Personal Style linkup tomorrow, so be sure to come back and check it out. Until then, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Lifestyle | My Cycle Survival Kit with Kotex

June 19, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #CycleSurvival #CollectiveBias

Let’s get a little personal, shall we? Ever since I was 11 years-old I’ve been a woman. Well, in the scientific sense of the word, it’s true. I was the only 5th grader with a purse full of feminine products. At the time, I thought it was the most dreadful thing EVER! As the years went on, preparing and carrying my feminine kit around was no big deal. But when I reached high school, things changed. My periods got worse, much heavier and I had a few embarrassing moments due to, well…”accidents”.

Once I entered my 20’s, it was almost unbearable. After several trips to the doctor, nights of moaning and curling up on the cold floor in a ball, rocking back and forth crying, I found out I suffered from extremely heavy periods and the doctor’s worried I’d have endometrioses. Thankfully, I didn’t and was finally able to get things under control, thanks to finally figuring out the right birth control method for my body. Now, my monthly cycle is a breeze and thanks to U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners I don’t fear those accidents anymore!

Walgreens - Kotex

WNJ Blog - Kotex, Walgreens

Now that I’m surviving my cycle, I am beyond thrilled to have my life back. I always carry my feminine survival kit with me once a month; I even have one in my car and one at work. Being a woman is tough sometimes, but it’s also a blessing.  When it comes to our time of the month, U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners are a must have. Adding them to my survival kit has been a lifesaver. I feel comfortable wearing them and the price (between $5.99 and $7.99) is very reasonable. I feel protected during the days leading up to my cycle, as well as those 2 or 3 days after. They’re lightweight, not bulky, and can fit in your purse with so much ease.

I believe that as women, we’re equipped with an undeniable amount of strength. We deal with and take on so much and we always have to be prepared. So what’s in my Survival Cycle Kit?

1. U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners

2. Chocolate (preferably Goobers)

3. Water

4. Fashion Magazines

5. Pain Meds (to cure the stomach, back, and pelvis pain)

So tell me, what’s in your cycle survival kit? Have you tried the new U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners? Let me know!

As always, thanks for reading. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and if you’re in need of a few items for your Survival Kit, feel free to use my references above! For more Cycle Survival inspiration, check here.  Until Monday, be blessed and stay safe…xo!

June 12, 2015 by Whitney 13 Comments

Last week I shared my favorite Minted designs for spring and summer weddings. I also promised to host a giveaway, featuring the company. Well today is the day! The good people over at Minted have given me a $50 credit to gift to one special reader. All you have to do is follow the rules below, and be sure to leave a comment.

Minted Giveaway

a Rafflecopter giveaway

In case you need some help figuring out what to purchase with your $50, here are the two items I ordered (c/o Minted). I figured hubby and I could use the two prints to hang in our new apartment. We’re not moving in until the end of the summer, but we’ve seen the space and are really excited to decorate!

A Helpful Reminder

Peacemakers

The 1st print I ordered was just the print; I want to add my own picture frame to it. I think it’s really cute and will be perfect to sit on our table near the front door. The last print includes one of hubby’s favorite scriptures. I decided to have that one framed and I ordered a larger size. I know we’ll be hanging that one on the wall.

So tell me, what would you do with a $50 Minted credit? What do you think about my orders? Let me know!
