Personal Style | Colorful Plus Size Shift Dress ft. Nordstrom Rack

July 28, 2015 by Whitney 25 Comments

I’m all for colorful, stretchy, printed shift dresses…all year! Plus size shift dresses have become one of the easiest garments to style and shop for. During the warmer months I tend to gravitate towards dresses, especially maxi’s and tunic dresses. So when I saw this Maggy London beauty on sale online at Nordstrom Rack I knew it had to be a wardrobe addition. Another reason I was drawn to this dress was the versatility; this garment can be worn during any and every season.

Plus Size OOTD - Shift Dress

I’ve been searching for a stylish black backpack, preferably one to fit my broad back, and thank goodness I found the perfect match. I was browsing TJ MAXX last week and there it was, on sale and in near perfect condition. It was ALL MINE!

The perfect casual and chic #ootd for sightseeing and hanging out! #wnjstyle

This backpack was the perfect addition to this casual chic outfit. I actually wore this OOTD while hanging out with hubby in downtown Old Ellicott City (MD). Although our main purpose was to snap pics, we ended up walking around for a while. It’s the perfect quaint and historic location to visit for a day trip. There are tons of cute shops and restaurants and the cobblestone streets give off that ideal historic vibe.

Personal Style | How to Wear a Tunic Dress

July 27, 2015 by Whitney 41 Comments

Let’s get into today’s outfit! This black and white tunic dress was hidden in my closet in a Nordstrom Rack bag, with a few other goodies. After digging through the bag and realizing how amazing the items were, I knew I HAD to wear them ASAP. I mean, who doesn’t love a good tunic dress during the summertime?

Black and White - tunic Dress

Tunic Dress - Nordstrom

Tunic Dress: West Kei, Nordstrom Rack (Sold Out // ANOTHER OPTION)

Nude Heels - Kenneth Cole

For my taste, this outfit is a little on the sexy side because of the length. But it’s still appropriate and hubby gave me the seal of approval so I figured, it was a go! The tunic dress is the perfect outfit for an evening event like a wedding, business cocktail function, a possible blogger event, date night, and the list goes on. While it does reveal my legs more than I’m used to, I feel GREAT in the dress; very confident. I actually love my legs and I’m beginning to enjoy showing them off every now and then – this tunic dress allows me to do just that.

Whatever you wear, be sure to feel confident. #wnjstyle

Bloomingdales - Kenneth Cole Heels

Heels: Kenneth Cole, Bloomingdales (Same) // Crystal Bracelet: Charming Charlie

The heels, an early gift from my grandma, are the perfect heel height which makes them very comfortable. The nude-grey color can be paired with several outfits, so these heels are definitely an item I’ll be rotating. I’m all about investing in versatile pieces like nude color heels, accessories and certain clothing items. Your wardrobe should be fashion forward and stylish, but also versatile and  practical. If you can’t wear an item at least 3 times (or 3 seasons), be really sure that you want  make the investment.

Your wardrobe should be stylish, versatile and practicle. #wnjstyle

#WNJPlaylist| 5 Songs to Motivate You Everyday

July 24, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

If there’s one thing I know for sure it’s that music has the power to motivate and inspire! Weather at work, in the car or home, I listen to music everyday. My taste in music is very random, but I like that. You can catch me listening to Nicki Minaj and 2Pac in the morning, Kirk Franklin at work, Bon Jovi during my lunch break, and Tyrese and Boney James in the evening to help me unwind. Music is an important part of my life and ever since I was young I’ve been a fan of all genres. So today I want to share 5 songs to motivate you everyday. By the way, I listen to these songs 7 days a week.

Songs to Motivate You Everyday

5 songs that will inspire you everyday. #wnjplaylist

1. Be Alright, Kehlani. I stumbled upon Kehlani and this song when I was searching for new artists on iTunes. I literally listen to the song every day before work. Here’s the one part that sticks out to me most; When the tide gets high, you just get low. Hold your breath and take it slow. Yes I might get wet, I might get thrown. But I’ll resurface all on my own.

2. Deceleration (This is It!), Kirk Franklin. This song has been a favorite for years. Whenever I listen I feel like I can conquer the world; I can do anything! It’s a reminder that God has equipped me with everything I need to live the life I want and deserve, despite my past or future obstacles. That’s what that song gives me and that’s why I listen every day; for a helpful reminder and constant motivation.

3. God in Me, Mary Mary. These singing sisters struck gold with this song! The title says it all: (it’s the) God in Me. This song reminds us that although we may think somebody has it all, we can’t forget that it’s really the spirit (of God) in them that makes their life that great.

4. Moment for Life, Nicki Minaj. Who didn’t love this song when it came out?! Moment for Life is one of those classics that will never get old. It’s a real “feel good” song laced with timely lyrics and life lessons, from both Nicki and Drake.

5. Living on a Prayer, Bon Jovi. This song is another classic. If you want to feel inspired and groove to a good beat, this song is for you! Wasn’t this like the teen anthem of the 80’s?! #LOVEIT

So tell me, what songs motivate and inspire you? Do you listen to any of the songs I mentioned often? Let me know!

As always, thanks for reading. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Thrifted Style | 8 Thrifty Bloggers You Should Follow

July 23, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

I’ve been dying to create a list like this forever! So today I’m beyond thrilled to share my list of 8 Thrifty Bloggers You Should Follow. In the past I’ve done some Thrifty Friend Features and they’ve been a lot fun, and seemingly helpful to those who’re searching for thrifty tips and tricks. I’ve actually featured quite a few of the thrifty bloggers on this list, so some may sound familiar. Nonetheless, this list is a must read and share. Let’s get into it!

Thrifty Bloggers to Follow

8 Thrifty Bloggers You Should Follow, ASAP. #thriftwithnic

1. Looking Fly on a Dime. Patrice is the thrifting queen. She’s even written a book on thrifting! She’s a definite thrift/style and entrepreneurial inspiration and it’s been a pleasure getting to know and follow her over the years. She’s been featured here on the blog before, and next week she’ll be sharing her #FearlessWoman story with us. Just goes to show that Patrice is much more than just fashion; she’s a woman living with purpose and is on a mission!

2. Thrift & Shout. Lindsey always has the best finds and she’s kind enough to showcase them over on the blog. I was drawn to her fashion sense, and cute haircut, a while back and I’ve been a fan ever since. I featured her as my first Thrifty Friend back in 2013 and she gave some very helpful thrift tips. Be sure to follow her for thrift inspiration and a dose of amazing style!

3. Style is She. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Atlanta based thrifter and stylist NeShanta and believe me when I say, she’s has an amazing and positive spirit. I just LOVE her! She shares the best thrifted fashion on her blog and is always ready and willing to share great thrifitng (and entrepreneurial) advice. NeShanta is a gem; be sure to check out her online shop too!

4. A Collected Gentleman. When I stumbled on Isiah’s site I immediately showed hubby. His thrifted style is impeccable and so well put together! It’s quite refreshing to see a young man take pride in his style, and Isiah does just that. He also shares a lot of inspirational and uplifting messages through his posts. A blogger with a purpose is something rare, but he fits the mold perfectly. Check him out and be sure to take a look at his WNJ feature as well.

5. DE Divah Deals (Fashion & Fun After Fifty). I call Antionette my big sis; no worries, she knows it. We met through the Bloggers Like Me group and have been friends ever since. Last year we had the opportunity to thrift together and I also made the trip to DE to for a Goodwill Fashion Show she invited me and hubby to. It’s always a blessing to find genuine people along this blogging journey and Antionette is definitely one of those people. She also give great blogging 101 tips too; check out her other site Blogging with Blake!

6. Thriftanista in the City. Troy is a great thrifter to follow because not only does she have GREAT finds, but she’s also really good at DIY fashion. That’s a skill I’d LOVE to have, lol. She shares great thrift tips and is always so chic and fly with her OOTD choices. I can just tell she too has an amazing spirit. One day, we’ll meet and thrift til we drop…I’m sure of it. Be sure to join her interactive thrift group on Facebook too!

7. Fashionably Employed. Jen is another blogging pal and has really great style tips for those of use who work a 9-5 but still want to be cute and stylish. She does a great job of dressing for the workplace and always provides useful tips on style and life in general. She’s also one of my favorite bloggers to collab with. We’ve collaborated a few times and it’s always fun to work with other bloggers who enjoy their craft. I’ve featured her as a Thrifty Friend so be sure to check it out!

8. Melodic, Thrifty & Chic. Eclectic, funky and fashion forward are just a few words I’d use to describe Anna’s style. She thinks outside the box when it comes to style and knocks it out of the park every time! Her blog is another refreshing take on fashion and I love that she is not afraid to be herself and express that through her personal style. It’s genius…and fun to watch. Take a look at her thrifty feature here!

Thrifted fashion is suppose to be fun, easy and always unique! #thriftwithnic

#FearlessWoman Feature | Shanna of Because Shanna Said So

July 22, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

Today’s #FearlessWoman is style blogger Shanna of Because Shanna Said So. I was immediately drawn to Shanna’s fashion-forward and relatable style, but as I started following her even more  I found myself falling for her fun and down-to-earth personality. I also admire a woman who loves her husband and kids and Shanna definitely fits that to a tee!

Becuase Shanna Said So

Shanna has been blogging for a while now and although in her latest post she let us know that she’s taking a well needed blogging break, I still had to introduce her to you all because the content that is up and live is great. I appreciate her honesty in letting her readers know that it was time for her to take a timeout – I respect that and totally understand the need to take a breather here every now and then. Enjoy this interview and be sure to catch up on her latest posts; I’m sure you’ll be inspired!

What’s a typical day for Shanna?

Right now, because we are in the summer months, I am running around to different camps for my girls, having breakfast/lunch dates with my girlfriends in between, pool time, spending weekends with friends and family and squeezing in work/blogging. This is a busy time, but my favorite. I am enjoying every single crazy & chaotic moment.

What inspired you to create Because Shanna Said So?

One of my IRL life friends mentioned that I should start a blog four years ago to share my style and affordable finds. I truly started it on a whim and as hobby when I was still working full time in marketing. I am mostly self taught and have grown on my own by making friends in the blogging community.

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mother, grandmother and best friend from elementary school because each have distinct characteristics of being both nurturing and strong minded women. They have always been there for me and believed in me no matter what.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

There is a LOT of competition out there. Find your voice and believe in yourself. If you love what you do and stay humble things will work themselves out. Don’t give up if you have a passion. And remember, it does take money to make money.

Becuase Shanna Said So - #FearlessWoman

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

To not worry about what others will think and just be YOU!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I definitely don’t see myself still blogging. Hopefully, a full-time stay at home mom watching my girls excel in academics and sports. This “blog” world is short term. What matters most to me is my family and being mom.

How can we keep up with you?

Lifestyle | Downsizing + Affordable Home Decor

July 21, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

Darrius and I couldn’t be more excited about our upcoming move! After several conversations, we finally decided that downsizing to a smaller apartment is the smartest option for us right now. When we first got married, I was gung ho about having a two bedroom apartment; after all, I needed that extra bedroom for office space. After two years I started to realize that I really wasn’t using the 2nd bedroom as an office, at all. Instead, hubs uses the room to iron his clothes for work in the morning. I store a few things in there, mostly clothes,  but it’s just not the best use of the space. Recently we’ve vowed to only pay for space that we know we’re going to use. Downsizing to a one bedroom was our final decision. So what better time to start searching for affordable home décor items, right?

We also have plans to move into a home in the next 3-4 years and to put it simply, the amount we’re paying now will not allow us to save as much as we need to buy a home within that timeframe. So the decision to downsize and get serious about saving is where we are. Needless to say, I’ve been excited to start apartment shopping, just for a few items. We’re blessed to have the big items already, but bathroom accessories, kitchen needs and a few other odds and ends are needed. Therefore, I’ve been browsing and shopping for affordable home decor items and H&M was my first stop.

I decided H&M was a good start because of the affordable price points and great selections. We’ve scored affordable home decor items that are chic, minimal in design, and functional. The items we’ve picked for came to $27.98; not bad, huh?! Of course, this is just the beginning, but it’s a good start.

Home decor should be affordable; no need to break the bank. #wnjhome

We’re also looking at H&M for bathroom towels and rugs, a shower curtain, and possibly a duvet/fancy quilt. The key is to shop H&M’s home décor sale section; they’re deals are sometimes unbeatable and the quality is superb. If you’re in need of simple, minimally designed home décor items, H&M is a great starting place.

So tell me, where do you shop for affordable home décor items? Do you like our picks from H&M? Let me know!

I’m really excited about the process and thankfully, Darrius is getting excited too. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Personal Style | Kimono and Leggings

July 20, 2015 by Whitney 25 Comments

Happy Monday! Despite being under the weather, my weekend was pretty good. I was able to get out of the house and browse the #Nsale at Nordstrom. I ended up purchasing this kimono that I’d been watching for a few days. When I saw it in the store (on sale) I knew it had to be mine. After all, wearing a kimono and leggings are staple pieces in wardrobe.  No matter the season, I’m known to heavily rotate those items.

Kimonos and Leggings

Kimono: Sejour (Another Option) // Bodysuit: Forever 21 // Leggings: Nordstrom Rack

Kimonos and Leggings

This outfit is perfect weekend wear and because the kimono is nice and lightweight, it’s perfect for running errands and being on-the-go. It’s also the perfect piece to dress up over a little black dress or a pair of slacks. Versatile, indeed!

Kimono’s and leggings are the perfect pieces for a casual and chic outfit. #wnjstyle

#WNJEats | 5 Must Visit Restaurants in Columbia, MD

July 17, 2015 by Whitney Leave a Comment

This summer I promised to get out and explore Columbia, MD. Of course this means visiting the best restaurants the county has to offer. Well, I’ve been doing just that and today I want to share the 5 must visit restaurants in Columbia, MD. I know some of you may not reside in Columbia, or even the DMV. But if you find yourself in the area this summer, definitely check out these 5 hot spots for a good meal!

Resturants in Columbia, MD

1. Sushi Nari. This sushi resturant is located in Kings Contrivence shopping center and lucky for us, it’s in walking distance from our apartment! Their edamame and cinnamon tea is divine and the prices are very reasonable. My favorite roll is the Creamy Crab Lover and the Smoking Philly. It’s a small and quaint Resturant with friendly workers. If you don’t want to dine in, call in your order for takeout! I think hubby and I eat here at least twice a month!

2. Cheeburger Cheeburger. If you’re in the mood for a burger and an amazing shake, head to Cheeburger Cheeburger. This is the perfect place for late night burger runs and they’re fried pickles are the best! You can also order online to takeout and at certain locations, they deliver.

5 must eat restaurants in @HowardCountyMD! #wnjeats

3. El Azteca (Clarksville). My mom and little sister put me and hubby on to this authentic Mexican Resturant. We recently at here for date night and the chicken quesadillas and fresh guacamole hit the spot! The price points are great and I really appreciate the family-like environment.

4. The Melting Pot. I’ve been dying to try this place since moving to Columbia and on little sis’ 13th birthday, I finally got my chance! The experience was SO much fun and the food, delicious. It’s a place for couples and families; the experience of cooking and dipping your own entrees is more fun when you’re with a group. The meals can be more in the pricey side, but it’s the perfect location/experience for a party or gathering!

5. Stanford Grill. I LOVE this place! They have the best salmon, Mac n Cheese and the bread pudding is to die for. It’s another great resturant for date night, couples night, or even a family get together. I’ve been dining here for years and I haven’t been disappointed once. The price points are higher, but trust me when I say it’s worth every penny. If you want splurge and treat yourself to a good meal, head to Standford Grill. You’ll thank me later!

So tell me, what are some of your favorite restaurants in Columbia Maryland? What are some of your favorite restaurants in general; I travel often? Let me know!

Thanks for reading and commenting. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
