Style | Wearing Shorts on the Weekend + Style Linkup

July 6, 2015 by Whitney 38 Comments

This weekend was absolutely wonderful! It was also humid, very busy and rainy, but nonetheless it was wonderful. I spent most of the days with family, which is always a great thing. Knowing that I was going to be busy I decided to wear shorts and a lightweight tunic on Saturday. Hubby and I joined my family at the River Hill 4th of July Parade. My little sister rode in the parade while representing her title, Miss American Teenager, Preteen. It was a lot of fun and she, of course, had a ball riding in a drop top white mustang. 😉

Summertime-Outfit

Wearing shorts is something I haven’t always been a fan of. But over the past few years, I have embraced my body and shape and wearing shorts has been part of that journey. Regardless of your size, shorts during the summer months is a must. As long as their appropriate and fit nicely, I say go for it!

Regardless of your size, shorts are a summer wardrobe must have. #wnjstyle

Speaking of wearing shorts, my favorite linkup from last week was Cheryl of Oh to Be a Muse.  I love Cheryl’s easy breezy outfit, and not to mention her hair! She always styles herself perfectly, head to toe, regardless of the season. She’s true to her personal style and looks great in these Zara shorts!

Personal Style | Another Black and White Outfit + a Statement Necklace

June 30, 2015 by Whitney 20 Comments

Have you ever worn outfit and felt really cool? LOL. Well, that’s how I felt in this black and white outfit. Worn for an outdoor date night, it’s the epitome of an easy, breezy, and stylish outfit. You shouldn’t be surprised that I’m wearing yet another black and white outfit. After all, this color combination reigns supreme when it comes to picking out my OOTD’s. And really, can you blame me? Styling a black and white outfit is probably the most chic and easiest thing to do, style-wise.

Statement Necklace and Sunnies

By adding a statement necklace, I gave the look a little umph. I love a good umph with any outfit and statement necklaces (and jewelry in general) is the easiest way to do add that element. Some of my favorite bloggers are statement necklace obsessed too. Lately they’ve inspired me to try different pieces that I wouldn’t normally go for. For example, Ty of Gorgeous in Grey has an amazing collection and after seeing it, I was ready to up my statement necklace game…like for real! LOL!

Add a little “umph” to your look with a statement necklace. #wnjstyle

I purchased this piece (and the earrings) from the Aldo Accessories store in Columbia Mall. It’s funny because as much as I’m a jewelry lover, I don’t frequent the store like I should. I did however stop in this past weekend and purchased this item. I was looking for a bodacious necklace to add to a plain white dress. Their prices are really reasonable, options are endless, and they always have a 2 for 1 sale. My kind of shopping! 😉

Personal Style | Sheer Blouse, Statement Necklace & Personal Style Linkup

June 29, 2015 by Whitney 43 Comments

Happy Monday, friends! If you haven’t noticed, I’ve decided that Summer 2015 is all about being casual, comfy and chic. Therefore most of my outfits will consist of a lot of basic wardrobe pieces. Today’s outfit proves that my #CasualSummer is in full effect!

Sheer Blouse and Statement Necklace

Sheer Blouse Outfit

This sheer blouse and statement necklace were among the few purchases I made a few days ago at Nordstrom Rack. I’m getting very particular about my style these days. The less fuss, the better! Again, I’m all about basic and simple wardrobe items. Although far from basic, I decided to add a statement necklace to this look and topped it off with my $4.99 tortoise readers from eBay. Hubs actually suggested I add them to complete the look. I think he was spot on with that addition!

Adding a statement necklaces or a pair of cute glasses really gives a simple outfit personality! #wnjstyle

Speaking of casual and chic and wardrobe basics, take a look at Rachelle from Pink Sole. Her look was my favorite from last week’s linkup! She effortlessly styled her top with a cute skirt and a sensible pair of chic blush heels. I LOVE this look and it’s perfect for a #CasualSummer. Rachelle is always so fly and so simple with her style; her style is easy to digest, practical, and always stylish.

Style | What to Wear to Work + Personal Style Linkup

June 15, 2015 by Whitney 55 Comments

Happy Monday! This weekend was a busy one, thanks to my now 13-year-old sister. Her birthday was yesterday and she enjoyed a weekend long celebration. It all started with her Sky Zone party with a few friends on Friday night and ended with a family dinner at the Melting Pot last night. Now. she’s headed to Vegas with my parents to continue the celebration. Pretty sweet 13th birthday package, huh?

Needless to say, I am exhausted…LOL! But all for a good cause, so I’m all smiles. When Monday came, early this morning at 5 a.m., I knew I want to wear something simple and quick for work; preferably minimal ironing. So I decided my new thrifted dress was the perfect solution for the age ‘ol question, what to wear to work?

Thrifted Dress - Wear to Work

This lightweight Jessica London dress was purchased this weekend at Savers thrift store (in Owings Mills, MD). When I saw the dress, I knew I had to at least try it on. It fit, 3 or 4 women complimented me while trying it on in the aisle, and hubby was a fan. Above all the dress made me feel and look great. SOLD!

Pairing this dress with minimal accessories was key. The print is already bold  and the fringes along the dress make for amazing detail. So a pair of earrings, cute flats, and possibly a clutch were all I needed to complete the look. When styling a dress with loud prints, be minimal with the accessories; let the garment speak for itself.

Speaking of printed dresses, my favorite linkup from last week is Adrienne’s beautiful kaftan. The print is stunning and the way she effortlessly styled the garmnent deserves an applause. I LOVE Adrienne’s feminine and cute style and whenever she links up, I’m inspired and excited to see what she’s wearing! She is one stylish woman who enjoys wearing prints, fabulous heels and pretty things.

Style | More Plus Size Spring Fashion + Fancy Pants

June 4, 2015 by Whitney 17 Comments

The weather has been a bit dreary lately, but I refuse to let my wardrobe suffer because of it. This week, I’ve been determined to still have fun with my clothes and wear enjoyable plus size spring fashion. Styling these pants and adding a funky designed clutch to the mix did the trick yesterday, wouldn’t you agree? After all, who doesn’t love a loud pair of fancy pants?!

I wore this outfit to the Goodwill breakfast in DC yesterday morning. I knew I had to go back to work afterwards, so I wanted to be comfortable yet chic. I think I nailed it! When people see me, I want my personal style to speak volumes, without scaring them away. I like to wear outfits that say “Whitney” without being obnoxious. For the event, I also wanted to be sure I was appropriate. Nothing too tight, short, and nothing that would restrict my movement. Mission accomplished!

Style should be fun, personal, and always appropriate. #wnjstyle

I was smitten with the nice compliments I received on these Steve Madden flats. I purchased them on our recent trip to NC at the Charlottle Preium Outles. This purchase was super sporadic. I walked into the store thinking I’d help hubby pick out a pair of shoes. 20 minutes later, I find myself memorized by the sparkles and glitz on the flats. Of course I had to try them on and of course they fit! The hard part was deciding on which color (gold, pewter or black). So I did the most logical thing and purchased all 3 colors, lol! I ended up receiving a discount on the 3rd pair. That made my purchase feel better. I’m a firm believer that if the shoe fits, and it’s comfortable, wear and buy it in all colors. Momma taught me that!

Style | Wearable Art

May 18, 2015 by Whitney 36 Comments

Hey, friends! This weekend was filled with fun, family and fashion. From fashion shows, church and thrifting I was definitely out and about in this heat. My trusty thrifted weekend outfit (below)  surely came in handy. I also added a little pizzazz to my look by added some hair. Yes, adding some hair. I’m a big fan of curly hair and I embrace wigs with a quickness. It gives me a different look without fully committing – can’t beat that!

On this day, hubby and I ran a few errands and decided to take a walk around the Wilde Lake area. We’ve been doing a lot of walking lately and Columbia, MD is truly the perfect backdrop for our new found hobby. There are so many lakes, parks and pretty neighborhoods to explore. This summer we plan to take full advantage of our surroundings.

Of course being cute and comfy while trekking around Columbia is a must. My thrifted Egyptian inspired dress is perfect for that!  The semi-stretch material makes the dress easy to move in. The pattern is fun and easy to wear, and also makes me think of my amazing trip to the pyramids. I also feel like I’m wearing a piece of art when styling this dress. Do you have a piece of clothing like that?

Style | Styling a Vintage Dress + a Style Linkup

April 27, 2015 by Whitney 39 Comments

It’s been while since I’ve purchased a vintage dress, but there was something about this black and white floral number that caught my eye. At first glance, I thought it was more of a moo-moo than a dress. I still think that actually, lol. I mean let’s be honest, styling a vintage dress can be tough. Nonetheless I threw it in the cart, determined to make it work.

When I got it home, I tried on the dress (again) and wasn’t all that impressed to be honest. But I figured adding a pair of heels and a statement jewelry piece would make this moo moo fly! I like patterns, especially floral and animal print, bt I’m not one to style an item like this. The dress has a lot going on, but that’s what’s fun about fashion. You can make pieces fun by adding your own personal touches  here and there.

Hiring a seasmstress to recreate certain wardrobe itmes is a must! #wnjstyle

I decided to wear this outfit to dinner with hubby one night. It was fun to wear, I was comfortable in it, and he thought I looked lovely. Works for me! However the next time I style this piece I’ll probably add a belt. This will give the dress a different shape. I’m also toying with the idea of making the dress into a top/tunic. Of course I’d take it to my seamstress. A trusty seamstress is a must for recreating pieces like this!

Personal Style | Easter in Dress Barn + a Style Linkup

April 6, 2015 by Whitney 76 Comments

Hello there, friends! I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. I spent most of mine spring cleaning and hanging with family. After heading to church for an amazing Easter service, hubby and I went for a walk around our neighborhood. We met my family for dinner around 4, then headed back home to watch Black Girls Rock. Did you catch the show on BET? Talk about inspirational!

Moving onto today’s outfit, I must give a shout out to my “Easter Outfit”. I mean this Dress Barn dress has been hanging in my closet for months. It’s about 2 years old and I purchased it while in Delaware at the Dress Barn outlet. I was searching for work clothes and hubby liked the color and style of the dress. Reluctant to even stop in the store, I finally agreed to try it on. Needless to say, I loved it! The fit was perfection, the color was indeed gorgeous, and the material was forgiving.

I’ve worn the dress a few times to work (here) and church, but it ended up getting lost in my closet. Thanks to my spring cleaning this weekend, I found it and rekindled my affection for this pretty frock. I knew it’d be perfect for Easter and adding my floral flats was the icing on the cake. I could have worn my nude heels, but I decided to add a some color. I love a good floral print, so the flats were a must!
