Lifestyle | Black Rachel Roy Tunic Dress + Life Lessons at 31

August 29, 2017 by Whitney 8 Comments

A few weeks ago, I celebrated my 31st birthday. To say the celebration was enjoyable is an understatement! My husband and I traveled to the Dominican Republic and enjoyed 5 relaxing fun-filled and glorious days in Punta Cana. While there, I wore a black Rachel Roy tunic dress, also known as my “birthday dress”. I wanted something flowy, lightweight and short, and this option was perfect!

We spent most of our days lounging by the beach or the pool, but I did get a chance to sneak off one morning to indulge in a little “me time”. I sat on our patio and filled a few pages in my journal. I like to reflect on my past year around my birthday. While some of my reflections will remain private, below are a few things I’ve learned over the past year about faith, marriage, life, and finances.

FAITH | Without my faith, I am nothing. God has always been the center of my life, but since turning 30 I have worked extremely hard to build a personal relationship with Him. Through daily devotionals, praying with my husband, and setting aside time in the morning and evening for Bible Study, I am constantly growing into the woman God has called me to be. It’s an ongoing transformation, but I am so happy that I’ve made deepening my relationship with God a priority. Because of this decision, several areas of my life have improved greatly.

Related: Spiritual Wellness | Forgiveness & Grace

MARRIAGE | Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of becoming a writer, a wife, and a mother. I never dreamed of the perfect wedding day or the perfect dress. My focus was always the marriage itself, as well as building a family. I’ve always seen positive displays of love, so I’ve always known what real love looks like. With Darrius, I have that. The love we share is a godsend and it’s something I do not take for granted. Our marriage is built on a solid foundation; God is at the center. I have learned to make our marriage a priority, which in turn has made me a better wife and partner. As I grow in Christ, I know that our marriage will only continue to thrive and get better.

Life is short. Life is a gift. Life is to be LIVED. #wnjinspired

LIFE | Life is short. Life is a gift. Life is to be LIVED. Although not perfect, God has blessed me with an amazing life. I pray over my life daily and make a conscious effort to keep certain energy at bay. I understand the importance of surrounding myself with uplifting, genuine, and purpose driven people. Looking at my circle today, it blows my mind at how diverse, yet similar we really are. Our day-to-day lives may be different, but our intention to be the very best human beings possible and our love for one another is the same.

FINANCES | Money has always been a touchy subject for me, but that’s because I never took the time to really understand it. For the past year or so, I’ve made it a point to learn more about money. I’ve read books, listened to podcasts, as well as discussed my finances with trusted individuals. All this in hopes to become educated so that I’m able to make wise financial decisions for myself, my businesses, and our family.

So tell me, what are some lessons you’ve learned thus far about faith, love, life, and finances? Also, what do you think about my black Rachel Roy tunic dress? Let me know!

I don’t claim to have all the answers, nor do I know it all. However, the lessons shared are just a few things that I know for sure. As I embark on this, my 31st year, I anticipate great things! I hope you stick around. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…xo!

Personal Style | Black & White Floral Kimono

May 3, 2017 by Whitney 7 Comments

Even though it’s been a while since I’ve posted an outfit, not much has changed. I still LOVE wearing and styling kimonos! The one styled in this post is actually my latest kimono addition. I purchased it a few weeks back during a shopping trip. I desperately need(ed) to add some spring and summer pieces to my wardrobe, so I headed to a few places I knew would have just what I was looking for. Of course, Nordstrom Rack was my first stop.

Becuase I’ve been taking much better care of my body, thanks to eating healthier and being more active, I’ve shed a few pounds. Buying clothes and being in between sizes makes shopping trips a bit more strategic. I can’t grab an item and go straight to the register anymore. I literally have to try everything on, even bras. No complaints, but it’s something I’m getting used to. So imagine my surprise when I was able to comfortably fit a OSFA (one size fits all) black and white kimono, found in the regular women’s size section. Can you say, SHOCKED?!

Clothes shopping while in between sizes? Try EVERYTHING on in the store before you get home.

Personal Style | Burgandy and Leopard Print

February 1, 2017 by Whitney 21 Comments

Well, hello there! It’s been a while, almost 3 months actually, since I’ve shared a Personal Style post. It’s also been a while since I’ve wanted to share a Personal Style post. Let’s just say I wasn’t feeling the whole process of getting dressed, taking pictures and blogging about my outfit while. For the past few months I’ve been living in leggings, sweaters and sneakers while hibernating in our one bedroom apartment, my office and my parents house. But please, don’t feel sorry for me…at all.

I thoroughly enjoyed the last few months! During my “hibernation” I made time to plan and prepare content, among other things, for the months ahead. I also spent much needed quality time with my husband, family and good friends. Catching matinee’s and finishing some really good books is also something I enjoyed during that time. But alas, it’s time to resume sharing those minimal #WNJStyle posts and re-enter my world of Whitney Nic James, the blog.

Burgundy and Leopard Print

When I think about my wardrobe last season, as well as the current one, I notice that I’ve worn a lot of burgundy and black and burgundy and leopard print. It seems to be my go-to color combo. Deciding to wear these colors together is a chic style choice; the warm tone of burgundy is perfect for the fall and winter season(s). Adding leopard print to the mix brings it all together, don’t you agree?

Adding a touch of leopard print to a burgundy and black outfit is a perfect style choice! #wnjstyle

This burgundy cardigan is one of the few pieces I’ve added to my minimal wardrobe this season. I’m still being very selective about the wardrobe items I add to my closet, but this piece was a must. It’s versatile, the color is timeless and the material incredibly warm. There have been quite a few days that I’ve worn this cardigan as a light jacket/coat, with a scarf of course. And did I mention it was on sale when I purchased it? The sales racks at Target (still) get me, everytime.

Personal Style | Melissa McCarthy Floral Tunic and Denim

November 28, 2016 by Whitney 23 Comments

At the beginning of the season, I decided to browse the Nordstrom Rack website for some new tops to add to my fall/winter wardrobe. Knowing that I’d probably find a lot of spring and summer items on sale, that’s where I looked first. After only browsing for a few minutes, I spotted this vibrant Melissa McCarthy floral tunic. I didn’t care how much it was, I just knew I had to have it!

I’d already figured out how to wear the top at least 3 times and thankfully, it was in my size. There was nothing left to do but add it to my cart! I knew the item would fit, thanks to trying on a few Melissa McCarthy items before, so I was very pleased when the floral masterpiece arrived at my front door. I tried it on immediately and of course, it was perfect.

Have you ever had an item of clothing that you just KNOW you’re going to wear constantly? Well, that’s how I feel about this tunic. It’s the most comfortable top I own and the oversized fit is perfection. Anything that’s flowy and not tight to my body, I’m a fan. The fact that it was on sale for less than $40 is also a major plus!

If you don’t love it and if you can’t wear it at least 3 times, don’t buy it. #wnjstyle

These days I’m very particular about what I purchase. If I don’t love it and if I can’t see myself wearing it more than 3 times, I’m not going to buy it. Of course, I make exceptions for accessories, shoes and some one-of-a-kind pieces, but for everyday wardrobe items that’s my rule.

Personal Style | My Take on Black and White Minimalism

May 18, 2016 by Whitney 33 Comments

When I decided to do the whole minimal style thing I vowed to do it my way. Of course I plan to continue incorporating the “minimal colors” like black, white and neutrals. However, I’m determined not to be boring with my outfit choices. This outfit could have easily gone the boring route, but adding a hint of my fun personality with the accessories made all the difference. That’s why this outfit is my take on black and white minimalism.

Minimal Outfit - Black and White

Blouse: Nordstrom Rack (Similar) // Pants: Nordstrom Rack (Similar) // Clutch: Love, Cortnie

Minimal Outfit Black and White

I’ll be the first to throw on a simple/basic outfit. The less fuss the better! However, I’m a stickler for adding a unique touch to every outfit; that’s where personal style comes in. Therefore, when deciding to wear this outfit, I made sure to add a bold clutch, a pair of trendy metallic heels and a unique necklace.

Black and white is the perfect color combination for a minimal wardrobe. #wnjstyle

I wear black and white several times a week and its my go-to color combo for many events. The colors are easy to style and can be worn in many variations. Simply put, black and white is the perfect color combination to add to any wardrobe.

Style | Summer Style Recap, Part I

August 31, 2015 by Whitney 32 Comments

Tomorrow is September 1st. Just typing that feels weird. I mean my goodness; the summer has come and gone like that! I do love the fall season, so I’m not complaining. However, Summer 2015 has been quite a memorable one and I’m a little sad to see it coming to a close. But I’m sure September, and the fall season, have plenty of greatness in store! Before we sashay into a new month, let’s take a look at my summer style recap.

Summer Style

Shift Dress & Sunnies // Floral Tunic & Backpacks

I mentioned that I was all about being casual and chic this summer, so I gravitated towards black and white, tunic dresses and jumpsuits (one-pieces). I also play with accessories and hair; always fun to do! I knew this summer was going to be busy, so I styled lost of pants, leggings and practical shoes.  From pageants to road-trips, comfort was my #1 priority.

My summer style was casual and chic; lots of tunics, leggings and shift dresses! #wnjstyle

Always a fan of statement necklaces, I tried to style as many different ones as possible. I mean after all they sit on my dresser begging to be worn, so why not?! My summer style also included backpacks. I’m so glad I gave this trend a try because I honestly LOVE wearing them. Yes, they’re on trend and super cute, but also functional and practical for trips, weekend errands and even casual days at the office.

Style | Wearing 1 Dress 2 Ways

July 9, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Last year I did a One Dress Many Ways series. The goal was to re-purpose one wardrobe item and style it 3 different ways for different occasions. It was a fun challenge, so I decided to do that again with another dress; this time I’ve decided to style it 2 ways. This black maxi dress has been in my closet for years and during the summer months, it’s a definite wardrobe staple. So I figured it was the perfect item to show how to style 1 dress 2 ways.

The 1st outfit is definitely a wear to work option. The long cardigan adds a bit of drama to the plain dress and the clutch is a perfect addition, and would come in handy if I had an event to attend after work. While the outfit may seem a bit dressy for some, it’s the perfect mix of comfortable and elegant for me. I like to look nice while at work while still being comfortable. Therefore the “fancy” cardigan and dramatic statement necklace are perfect!

I’m all about saving time and money, so remixing this maxi was very beneficial. The next look is yet another outfit I’d wear to work. The leopard flats help add a personal touch, something I always do when styling an outfit. Every girl should have at least 2 leopard print accessories, shoes count, in her wardrobe. Trust me, the print goes with everything! In my book leopard print is a neutral, don’t you agree?

Remixing your wardrobe is a sure way to save time and money. #wnjstyle

I added also added a black sleeveless vest to give the outfit a chic feel. I actually saw this vest as I was walking to the cash register at TJMaxx a few weeks back. It was in the women’s section, so I was a bit skeptical on how it’d fit. After trying it on, the size large tag was laughable. I usually wear a size 1X and sometimes 2X, depending on the cut of the garment. But this is a prime example of garments being cut larger than expected, and why trying on items is SO important. You just never know how an item is cut and how it’ll fit until you take a few seconds to try it on.

Style | More Plus Size Spring Fashion + Fancy Pants

June 4, 2015 by Whitney 17 Comments

The weather has been a bit dreary lately, but I refuse to let my wardrobe suffer because of it. This week, I’ve been determined to still have fun with my clothes and wear enjoyable plus size spring fashion. Styling these pants and adding a funky designed clutch to the mix did the trick yesterday, wouldn’t you agree? After all, who doesn’t love a loud pair of fancy pants?!

I wore this outfit to the Goodwill breakfast in DC yesterday morning. I knew I had to go back to work afterwards, so I wanted to be comfortable yet chic. I think I nailed it! When people see me, I want my personal style to speak volumes, without scaring them away. I like to wear outfits that say “Whitney” without being obnoxious. For the event, I also wanted to be sure I was appropriate. Nothing too tight, short, and nothing that would restrict my movement. Mission accomplished!

Style should be fun, personal, and always appropriate. #wnjstyle

I was smitten with the nice compliments I received on these Steve Madden flats. I purchased them on our recent trip to NC at the Charlottle Preium Outles. This purchase was super sporadic. I walked into the store thinking I’d help hubby pick out a pair of shoes. 20 minutes later, I find myself memorized by the sparkles and glitz on the flats. Of course I had to try them on and of course they fit! The hard part was deciding on which color (gold, pewter or black). So I did the most logical thing and purchased all 3 colors, lol! I ended up receiving a discount on the 3rd pair. That made my purchase feel better. I’m a firm believer that if the shoe fits, and it’s comfortable, wear and buy it in all colors. Momma taught me that!

If the shoe fits and it’s comfortable, wear and buy it in all colors! #wnjstyle
