Preachers of LA – Why I’m a Fan of the Show

November 15, 2013 by Whitney 20 Comments

As we all know, reality TV is my “thing”. Being a very spiritual person as well, I was naturally excited and intrigued when I saw there was going to be a show focusing on preachers, Preachers of LA. I must admit I was a bit uneasy because I know many people already have preconceived thoughts about preachers and church. But after watching andย reallyย paying attention to the meat of the show, I was hooked. Ignoring the fancy cars, houses and wardrobes, the fact that the show focuses on more than just the Bible is something I think the world needs. If you take away the glitz and glam of the show, you’ll see that the pastors have a past, they’ve had (and are still dealing with) hardships and struggles and above all, their human.

One of the Pastors on the show, Jay Haizlip, is covered with tattoos yet comes across as a very down to earth person who’s main concern is saving souls. In this weeks episode, he sat down with a band member from the rock band Korn and their conversation was pretty insightful. Check out some of the points that stuck out to me.

1. “Oneย thing I hate to see is Christians hating on other Christians…”

2.” Those people judging us need Jesus more than the drug addicts…”

3. “If you judge people by their looks you’ll miss who they are and what God wants to do in their lives…”

Gives you something to think about, right? My main point of today’s post is to say that if it takes a show like this to reach that one person who is lost and unsure of what or where to go next, it’s done it’s job. Sometimes it takes a show like this to get to through to people. I also think the show starts a necessary dialect about more than just religion – it opens up dialect about faith, spirituality and our beliefs.

Have you watched the show? What did you think? If you haven’t. I’ll say this – before you count the show completely out, or if you’ve already watched it and don’t like it, try watching it with a different perspective next time. If it’s not for you, so be it. Everything ain’t for everybody, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Until next time, be blessed and TTYS!

I still haven’t watched and I’ll be sure to take with me what you said about it. I watched Thicker Than Water on Bravo and there was nothing positive I took away from that show. It out a bad taste in my mouth and made them and a lot of Christians just look bad. I’ll be sure to let you know what I think when I get around to watching this!

Thanks for commenting, Alisha! And I have NOT watched Thicker Than Water – something just didn’t sit well with me about that show. I guess my gut was right, lol. But let me know how you like Preachers of LA! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have seen it and I think it’s horrible. I think those pastors have totally missed the mark about what shepherding the congregation means. People have a right to live their life anyway they choose but to twist scripture to make it fit your choices is so wrong to me and that’s what I see on this show.

Sometimes they say something good but then that gets forgotten because of the sheer and blatant disregard for upholding biblical principles.

I understand your point but I can’t see it with this show.

I love the show and I am glad to see a blog about it that supports the show! These men are actually going out into the community and doing well! Also ITS L.A. … I mean it’s the city of flash and glam… Now I have also watched Thicker Than Water and they are shopping, spending money and doing everything but preaching on the show… I don’t know about that one just yet!

Very interesting outlook on the show. Unfortuanately I am not sure the world can elimate the glitz and the glam from the show after all that is the drawing card and why they are watching. I also think that the show distorts the world thoughts about prosperity. But I have to say that I have enjoyed the actual seens when they are actually doing ministry. Good post:)

I am a big fan of the show. Your right, put the glitz away and they have real struggles like the rest of us. Deitrick Haddon is my fav. On the other hand Thicker Than Blood, is a hot mess. The mom and dad think there the Joneses. The mom is focus on martial things.

Ok…I’ve been joking that there needs to be a reality show on pastors (I work at a church) and I can’t believe there actually is one! Too bad I don’t have TV, is this online??

And that last quote is awesome!!! (Don’t judge someone just because they sin differently than you.) Amen to that!

OMG! We’re still soooo frikkin similar! I swear when I heard about this show I was so annoyed b/c I was like here we go, another show making a mockery of what it means to be a follower of Christ! And I promised myself I wouldn’t watch but got caught with my TV on that channel and stumbled across a marathon. I saw one episode and was hooked. I loved how it showed that these men of God that so many put on pedestals are human just like everyone else. What sold me was the conversation Deitrick had with the pretty boy Pastor. I appreciated how real and raw they were with each other. I agree with you, I think it’s a good show to let people know that loving and believing in God doesn’t make you automatically perfect. It’s a daily struggle to walk and live in the word of God but that doesn’t mean God loves you any less. This is a reality show about preachers that I can actually appreciate UNLIKE Preacher’s Wives and The Tankards Blood Is Thicker. I despise that Tankards show they just seem sooooo not genuine and I feel they make a mockery of the Word.
