Style | Thrifted Travel Style + JORD Watches

July 16, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

Continuing with my travel style today’s outfit is definitely something I’d wear during on a trip. I’m a huge fan of tunic dresses, so purchasing this thrifted beauty on my last thrifting trip was a must. I also decided to add my wooden watch (c/o JORD) to the look. The right accessories are an absolute must have for travel style.

Travel Style - Tunic

Tunic: Thrifted, Value Village // Belt/Necklace: Thrifted, Value Village // Flats: Steve Madden (Similar)

Thrifted Tunic

This printed tunic dress is something I’d wear on a chill/relax day during my travels. It’s lightweight, easy to throw on, and still stylish and fashion forward; all of which are very important travel style requirements. As I mentioned in this post, cutesy and comfortable flats and the perfect accessories (shoes and jewelry) are also travel style needs.

Mens Wooden Watches

I actually purchased this thrifted belt on my most recent thrift store run in Charlotte, NC. I decided to style it as a necklace. Genius, right?! The watch was a no brainier because it’s a casual yet chic timepiece. The fact that it’s wooden (environmentally friendly) is awesome!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Glenda Harrison of So What to Twenty

July 15, 2015 by Whitney 9 Comments

It’s time to meet another #FearlessWoman! As always, I’m very excited to introduce you to today’s feature. However I’m particularly thrilled about today’s #FearlessWoman, Glenda Harrison. I’ve been a So What to Twenty blog reader for months and I always leave Glenda’s blog with style and life inspiration. She is the true definition of a style blogger being more than “just clothes”.

Glenda, a mother, wife and entrepreneur living in California, does a great job of seamlessly intertwining real life inspiration into her stylish posts. Her style is feminine, fun and refreshing. She enjoys being a lady and loves to dress like one; I LOVE that! Enjoy her thought provoking and colorful interview below and don’t forget to visit her blog. Be inspired!

So What to Twenty - Style Blogger

What’s a typical day for Glenda?

I wake-up about 6 a.m. and I lay in bed listening to quiet mediation music for about 30 minutes. This is my way of ushering the day in gently. Then I rise to have a tall drink of water and a nutritious snack to give me fuel for my workout with Fitness Blender. I believe there is a definite connection between the mind and body, so after I workout, my mind is completely clear. I use this time to journal and write my goals for the day. Once I’m done with this, I shower and have a healthy meal. If I’m not posting on the blog and promoting the post for the day, I’m working on my upcoming book called, A Place Called Peace. I typically dedicate the entire morning and early afternoon to writing, whether it be for the book or the blog. On some days I use this time to also respond to email request from marketing and PR that represent clothing stores and designers. By mid-afternoon, it’s time to be Mom, so I commit the rest of the day tending to my son’s school activities; one son is a senior in high school and is involved heavily in music, and my youngest is an athlete. Then there’s the cooking of dinner, the nagging to get homework done, etc. After a full day, I look forward to a long, hot candle-lit bath, and then crawling into bed with a good book.

Since I have to switch gears during each day from entrepreneur to writer to mom and wife, it is important for me to have times to myself throughout the day. Sometimes I’ll treat myself to lunch out with a girlfriend or alone. I enjoy my time alone. I like to sit and people watch or just spend the time in my own thoughts without the interruption of social media.

This is a typical day, however during Southern California’s many fashion weeks it’s an entirely different ball game. Then I have several shows to attend – some in Orange County, others in Palm Springs and then of course, Los Angeles. And, on occasion, I attend and report on events which take place at or in conjunction with my college Alma mater – the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.

What inspired you to create So What to Twenty?

I had just been through a very difficult experience in my life with an illness, while simultaneously working for a place that I loathed. I don’t want to give too much away because it’s in A Place Called Peace, but after praying, God answered my prayer and I was freed from bondage. I decided it was time to re-entered the fashion world as a writer. I use to write for a local So Cal newspaper as a fashion and lifestyle columnist and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of writing, but I gave it up to start a non profit organization to support women fighting cancer. To make a long story short, I started So What to Twenty because it was an outlet for me to write again and to write about the field I have always loved.

Glenda - So What to Twenty

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

#1: My mother. She spent the last 6 months of her life fighting pancreatic cancer. She had such a gentle and quiet spirit. She was so very brave. She is my hero.

#2: Esther in the Bible. I think about what her uncle Mordecai spoke to her during her time as queen…“Perhaps you have been made queen for such a time as this.” That is such a profound statement. It makes me stop and wonder about my position in life and what more I can do to help any given situation. I love how Esther used her lot in life, and the favor with the king to save her people. Her story of making an unwanted life circumstance work in her favor resonates with me in a very deep way.

#3: The new Glenda. I know that sounds extremely conceited, but let me explain. The Glenda prior to 2014 wasn’t fully developed into the woman she needed to become. It wasn’t until recently, I discovered my value and worth as a woman. I found this out by delving deep within into a place where many of us don’t want to venture. Yes, there was a great deal of hurt and pain, but when it was all said and done…once I removed all the gunk, I found out I am one heck of a woman. I can say it proudly. Before I discovered my value, I allowed others to place their determined sum on me, and often that sum was worthless. Unfortunately, prior to 2014, I believed I was worthless. I don’t any longer. Now I know I am BLESSED, A TRAILBLAZER, PROMISING, BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRING AND UNIQUE.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

To thy own self be true. I can truly say I’m operating in my gift in writing and fashion. Both have been passions of mine since I can remember. Though I began strictly as a fashion writer, my life experiences have allowed me to take So What to Twenty in a deeper direction. I often speak of life situations but I use fashion as a visual. That is why my tag-line is, Where Life and Fashion Intersect. Fashion is so much more than clothing, it is a true life experience. Fashion is a part of your overall style. In my opinion, you can’t talk about fashion without intertwining life experiences.  In essence, your endeavors should be in alignment with your own gifts and passions. If you’re doing what you are truly passionate about, people will know it immediately because your verve will spill over into everything you do.

Glenda - So What to Twenty

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

A #FearlessWoman / brave woman is one who isn’t afraid of being vulnerable. We all hurt, cry, laugh, need support, need companionship, guidance, etc. It is good to voice these things. This society constantly tells us otherwise. Fearless to the world is acting like you are always on your A-game…that your stuff doesn’t stink. Right? Well guess what, I’m not to proud to ask for help and I’m not to proud to say that sometimes things are fairly middling. There is amazing and uncompromising strength in being real. I totally dig being around people who are just being themselves without that iron curtain being drawn around them. Dig?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself sitting at my desk, which over-looks a garden, in my beautifully decorated home, while cranking out my next book. It is my desire to be a successful, full time book author/writer.  The End.

How can we keep up with you?

Style | Travel Style Continued + Nordstrom Must Haves for Traveling

July 14, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Hey there! Yesterday I showcased one of my favorite travel outfits and of course, comfort and style were key elements. Today I want to share a few of my travel style must haves from Nordstrom. I really love their in store and online selections and actually plan to purchase a few items from them for upcoming road trips/wardrobe purposes. Their anniversary sale is coming up, so it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the awesome deals they’ll have. Let’s take a look!

Travel Style - Nordstrom

1. Sleeves Trench. I’ve been eyeing this trench for months and I’ve been waiting for the price to drop. Patience paid off because now it’s $77 instead of the original $129 price tag. I scooped up the item online and cannot wait to rotate it during the summer and fall season. It’s lightweight and perfect to add to any travel style outfit. It’s a chic piece and although it’s khaki colored, I still plan to style this with some travel outfits during the early fall.

2. Screen Tee-Shirt. While I may not purchase this particular tee, the style and color is perfect for my travel style! A good lightweight, colorful and fun tee shirt is a great addition to any travel style. Tee shirts like this are a must have because they’re also easy to pair with denim, shorts, or even a maxi skirt and it’s also easy to fold and pack a few of these in a suit case.

3. Denim Capris. I love a pair of good denim and this Lucky pair happens to be on sale. This is another item I’ve watched for a while and I’m thrilled they’re finally on sale. It’s a tedious task to find denim that’s made well, so I often shop at Nordstrom or Macy’s to score the Lucky, Seven and Micheal Kors brands. They work for my shape and the price isn’t (usually) outlandish.

All the clothing you’ll need for your next road trip/vacation! #wnjstyle

4. Jumpsuit. My travel style usually consists of a few maxi dress or a few jumpsuits. If you follow along with me on Instagram you know that lately I’ve been all about jumpsuits this season. So when I saw this Jessica Simpson one I was hooked! I love a jumpsuit while on vacation because it’s an easy item to dress up or down. I suggest light weight material like cotton or polyester. That material is breathable and more than likely, you won’t have to iron after unpacking.

5. Nightgown/Tunic. I absolutely LOVE to sleep in long tunics/caftans when traveling. Something about sashaying around in your hotel room while wearing one is so chic! This Oscar de la Renta option is a bit pricey, but every now and then it’s OK to splurge on a designer item. Especially if you’re like me and you know the garment will get lots of wear.

6. Swimsuit. Of course a swimsuit is a must for travel style. A pretty and bright colored one, with ruching to conceal the tummy, is perfect! I’m a fan of one pieces, although I do wear a two piece here and there. If you’re into the one piece look, this La Blanca number is a great option.

Personal Style | Travel Style

July 13, 2015 by Whitney 42 Comments

Happy Monday! I hope you’re all well and ready for an amazing and productive week. Hubby and I traveled to Delaware for an unexpected, yet fun and enjoyable, road trip yesterday. We visited his family and also ate some really good cookout food! It’s not out of the ordinary that we hop in the car for a weekend or day road trip, so I thought this week I’d talk about some of my travel style outfits/travel must haves.

Of course when traveling comfort is key, so I like to wear clothing that’s fit a bit looser (and leggings). Tunics, oversized tee shirts and plazo pants are at the top of my travel style list. Hubby and I do a lot of road trips, so functional wardrobe pieces are a must for me as well. Shoes that can easily be removed while in the car like sandals and comfy flats are important too. The flats in this outfit are perfect. Not only are they comfortable, but they’re in style and can go with just about any outfit.

Your travel style should be comfortable, stylish and functional. #wnjstyle

I can usually fit my outfits and personal items in the same bag as hubby, so we often road trip with one bag. If we’re going somewhere for an entire weekend and have different events to attend while there, we carry 2 bags max. I also carry a big tote bag or purse and I keep it next to me on the ride. More on what’s in our bags and how I pack later this week. In the meantime, check out a few of my miscellaneous road trip essentials here!

#WNJInspired | What I Know For Sure About (Almost) Making it Through Your 20’s

July 10, 2015 by Whitney 3 Comments

One month from tomorrow I’ll be 29; the last year of my 20’s. While this fact has terrified me a few times before, I’ve had a change of heart. I’m now excited to enter into my last year as a 20-something year old. This year alone has taught me so much about myself, love, faith, family, and friendships. I’m no Kanye…I don’t have all the answers, Sway. However I do know 5 truths about (almost) making it though your 20’s.

Making it Through Your 20's

1.  It’s tough, but SO worth it. Your 20’s are no joke. Responsibility sets in and all of a sudden you’re actually an adult. Scary I know, but fear not. The responsibility will help you grow and you may actually appreciate those hard, seemingly unbearable lessons you will endure. Paying bills (on time), getting that credit report in good shape and the small things like following up with emails and returning text messages/phone calls will all make you better. Trust me, it’ll be worth it.

2. You can’t eat that. I am still learning this, but I’ve realized that the burgers, fries and shake runs have to become less and less. Junk food just doesn’t agree with me anymore and it’s been a hard lesson to learn. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good Shake Shack burger or a Taco Bell nacho cheese flavor taco. But moderation is key. More green stuff, protein and water will do your body good…and make you feel (and look) better!

3. Your faith is everything. I’ve been a believer since I was little, but in my 20’s I’ve realized that I’m much more spiritual than religious. I take different things from different religions, practices and make it work for my lifestyle. However, my foundation remains solid and my core beliefs remain the same. I read the Bible and attend church, but I’m more about living the life of a purpose driven Christian. My actions speak louder than what I say. I luh God and he’s the only one for me!

5 truths about making it through your 20’s. #wnjinspired

4. Build on small wins. Gone are the days when I believed in overnight success. It’s all about consistency and building on small wins. I appreciate working hard and I understand that those small wins are sometimes even more gratifying than the huge ones. I’m honestly OK with having a bunch of small wins under my belt instead of one or two big wins that’re few and far between. Think about it…

5. Invest…in yourself. Your 20’s should be the time when you start investing in yourself; your goals, plans, business and family aspirations. Now is the time to invest in all of that! Start saving some money for that house, new car, cross-country move…whatever it is. It’s about you and what’s going to make you better in the future. Being in your 20’s gives you permission to be just a little bit selfish, as long as there’s a purpose to you your selfishness. LOL.

6. (BONUS) Friendships change. I’ve been blessed to have the same best friend since grade school. Her friendship remains constant through whatever we go through, but I can’t say the same for everyone. And that’s OK. Friendships change and to be quite honest, I don’t believe all friendships are meant to last. Some may come back around, but when you have to work so hard to make a friendship last, is it really worth it? Being someone’s friend should not feel like a chore; it should be effortless and balanced. I’m thankful for my best friend, and those few good friends I have in my life who may not always agree with me but tell me what I need to hear. That’s true friendship.

So tell me, what do you know for sure about making it through your 20’s? Let me know!

Style | Wearing 1 Dress 2 Ways

July 9, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Last year I did a One Dress Many Ways series. The goal was to re-purpose one wardrobe item and style it 3 different ways for different occasions. It was a fun challenge, so I decided to do that again with another dress; this time I’ve decided to style it 2 ways. This black maxi dress has been in my closet for years and during the summer months, it’s a definite wardrobe staple. So I figured it was the perfect item to show how to style 1 dress 2 ways.

The 1st outfit is definitely a wear to work option. The long cardigan adds a bit of drama to the plain dress and the clutch is a perfect addition, and would come in handy if I had an event to attend after work. While the outfit may seem a bit dressy for some, it’s the perfect mix of comfortable and elegant for me. I like to look nice while at work while still being comfortable. Therefore the “fancy” cardigan and dramatic statement necklace are perfect!

I’m all about saving time and money, so remixing this maxi was very beneficial. The next look is yet another outfit I’d wear to work. The leopard flats help add a personal touch, something I always do when styling an outfit. Every girl should have at least 2 leopard print accessories, shoes count, in her wardrobe. Trust me, the print goes with everything! In my book leopard print is a neutral, don’t you agree?

Remixing your wardrobe is a sure way to save time and money. #wnjstyle

I added also added a black sleeveless vest to give the outfit a chic feel. I actually saw this vest as I was walking to the cash register at TJMaxx a few weeks back. It was in the women’s section, so I was a bit skeptical on how it’d fit. After trying it on, the size large tag was laughable. I usually wear a size 1X and sometimes 2X, depending on the cut of the garment. But this is a prime example of garments being cut larger than expected, and why trying on items is SO important. You just never know how an item is cut and how it’ll fit until you take a few seconds to try it on.

#FearlessWoman Feature | Leslie Hendricks Young of Bloggers Like Me & Fashion Du Jour

July 8, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

When I started blogging there were a handful of bloggers I leaned on for advice, tips, and just regular everyday inspiration. Leslie Hendricks Young, founder of Bloggers Like Me (BLM Girls) and Fashion Du Jour was one of those few people. She’s still someone (and one of the few bloggers) I can call a friend to this day. The BLM Girls is a collaborative of women sharing ideas, building relationships, and celebrating each other through blogging, social media and meet ups. Leslie is not only the head of this ever-growing community, but she’s also the mother of 4 beautiful children, the God-fearing wife of a preacher, freelance writer, blogger, and stylish women entrepreneur on the go living in California.

Leslie is truly a woman of God and lives her life with purpose. She’s done an outstanding job of bringing together a community of female bloggers and given us a platform to talk and grow through the world of blogging, business and much more. I’ve worked with Leslie on several occasions and she’s always full of wonderful ideas and is ready and willing to help others at a moments notice. She loves being a mommy and a wife and I’m forever grateful for her advice on how to maneuver through life as a young newly married Christian wife. She is without a doubt a #FearlessWoman and it’s a pleasure to introduce her to you all. Enjoy the interview and be inspired!

Bloggers Like Me

What’s a typical day for Leslie?

A typical day begins with getting out of bed, washing my face brushing my teeth and drinking a bottle of water.  I make myself a cup of coffee, say a short prayer and begin waking the kids up.

What inspired you to create Fashion Du Jour and Bloggers Like Me (BLM)?

I was inspired to create Fashion Du Jour because I’ve always enjoyed dressing up and I wanted to begin documenting my outfits.  I also wanted to share spiritual tidbits with women and thought using fashion as a vehicle would make sense.  I started Bloggers Like Me because I found that there were so many successful bloggers who I could not relate to.  From what it appeared, they had money to blow and no responsibilities.  I could not relate.  It was a struggle to find other bloggers who were living my reality so one day I decided to start a group for bloggers like me.

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

I am inspired by many women for different reasons.  I am inspired by Michelle Obama for her courage to be herself even when the whole world wants her to conform to be and acting like someone she’s not.  Case in point, her appearance on Black Girls Rock.  I am inspired by mothers/wives raising families with 4 or more kids in a loving and patient way! Period. There’s nothing more to be said.  Third, I admire my mom.  She got saved in her latter years and has changed her life.  I am proud of her and I thank God that she now knows in whom her trust and faith should lie.

Leslie - Bloggers Like Me

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

A piece of advice for women entrepreneurs is to never stop learning and don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s power in setting your pride to the side.

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

My definition of a #FearlessWoman is someone who knows who she is and where she’s going.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years from now, I see myself in better shape in every area of my life.  I will have a strengthened family, faith, healthy and purpose.  I will continue to put in the daily effort it takes to get there.

How can we keep up with you?

Personal Style | Where to Shop for Affordable Statement Necklaces

July 7, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

This summer I’ve made it a point to really wear more of my jewelry. After all, I have tons of it that’s been sitting on my dresser, season after season, collecting dust. So I vowed to incorporate more statement necklaces into my #CasualSummer wardrobe. So far, so good. I often get asked, where to shop for affordable statement necklaces. After I run off the stores and sites most people are really impressed by the stores selections and prices. So today I’m sharing my top 5 go to stores for affordable statement necklaces.

Affordable Statement Necklaces

1. Thrift Stores. Of course I’m a fan of thrifting and thrifting statement necklaces is one of my favorite things to do. You just never know what you’re going to find! The prices, well it should go without saying that their prices are (often) unbeatable. Thrift stores are my 1st stop when looking for unique pieces, and it’s a great place to start if you’re just getting into the whole thrifting thing. So next time you need a new statement necklace, don’t count out the thrift stores!

Thrifting for jewelry is a GREAT place to start for 1st time thrifters! #thriftwithnic

2. Aldo Accessories Store. Physically shopping their store is like walking into a candy shop. There’s SO MUCH bling and prettiness to gawk at and the prices are just right for me. The Aldo Accessories Store (online and in store) is great for last minute shopping. I needed a piece to go with an outfit the day of an event. I walked in and within minutes I not only found this gorgeous necklace, but 2 packs of affordable studs as well. #WINNING  I also snagged this beauty a while back in store. I absolutely love it and it’s easily on of my favorite purchases to date.

3. H&M. It never fails; I always find at least one unique statement necklace when browsing the H&M jewelry section. Their necklaces start as low as $2.99 (when they’re on sale) and go up to $34.99. Whatever your budget or style, H&M has got you covered on statement necklaces!

4. eBay. I haven’t purchased a necklace form eBay in a while, but when I do need a new statement necklace I know I can find what I’m looking for there. The prices on eBay are excellent and all you have to do is type in “statement necklace” in the search engine and bam! You have endless options, styles, and options to buy (either auction or buy now). A lot of the necklaces I purchase from there are from China or somewhere else overseas, so I don’t expect the same quality as I would from other stores/sites. But that’s OK. Sometimes an expensive piece can be a good addition to your collection. And from time to time, the quality is actually better than I expect.

5. Nordstrom Rack. It’s no secret that this store is one of my faves for clothing. The last time I was in the store, I noticed their jewelry department was pretty good too. I purchased the necklace below and a few other items, all for under $30. My kind of prices, great quality designers, and a plethora of options. Their online selection is great too!
