#FearlessWoman Feature | Dionne of Styled by Dionne

March 24, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing today’s #FearlessWoman on WNJ a time before. Dionne Dean is the brains and beauty behind Styled by Dionne and author of  ‘Make Your Closet Pay‘. Not only is her energy and smile infectious, but her wanderlust nature and passion for life is incredible. I admire her spirit, pay it forward mentality and above all, her tenacious work ethic. This thrift, vintage and “never pay retail” queen should definitely be on your radar, if she isn’t already. Enjoy her interview below; I’m sure you’ll be inspired to travel and live a fabulous life just as Dionne does!

What’s a typical day for Dionne?

Is there such a thing as a “typical” day in the life of any entrepreneur, LOL! I wake around 4 or 5 to spend time in prayer. I find that if I don’t spend that time in prayer and meditation to get focused and centered on the purpose for my business, I’ll be rocked to and fro by the days events. Once the hubs is out the door, I head into my office and spend about an hour checking emails and social media. I work on getting all my eBay orders and thrift boxes together the night before so that I can be ready to hit the post office when it opens at 9:30. After the post office, I head to 3 or 4 thrift stores and am done by noon or 1 pm. If I have a client, I head to whichever store I’ve chosen for them an hour prior our appointment to set up their fitting room and alert the sales staff that I have a client coming. If not, I head home to upload items in eBay or spend time reaching out to potential clients.

Now, if’s it’s a morning when I have my ‘Good Morning Texas’ beauty segment, the day goes a bit different. I’m still up at 4 or 5, but I usually check on my models, go over my product details (pre-playing the segment in the bathroom mirror LOL) and selecting my outfit. I’ve tried getting my look together the night before, but I’m one of those people who has to see how I feel before I get dressed 😉

2. What inspired you to create Styled by Dionne & publish Make Your Closet Pay?

My undergraduate is in Clothing, Textiles and Merchandising and my goal was to become a buyer and travel the world purchasing beautiful clothing. However, after volunteering at various community agencies in Atlanta, I decided to switch gears. I moved to Chicago, completed an AmeriCorps Year of Service and got my Masters in Cultural and Educational Policy. I spent 6-7 years preparing high school, college-aged and graduate students for entry into the world of work and realized the one thing we didn’t spend enough time on was how to dress when you actually GOT the job. There was so much out there on interviewing skills and dressing for an interview, but nothing on building and maintaining your personal brand AT the job. So, I decided to launch a business styling new graduates, new entrepreneurs and basically anyone looking to re-brand themselves for promotion.

I published ‘Make Your Closet Pay‘ because I want people to help people get rid of the items their not wearing and reinvest that money into themselves, whether it be in paying off debt, going on that dream vacation or purchasing clothing that they WILL wear. I’ve had an eBay store since my early days in Atlanta and now that I use it to sell my thrifted items, I’ve used the profit to pay down debt, go home to London for 2 weeks and buy $45 Jimmy Choos!

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mommy. The older I get, the more I realize what an awesome woman my mother is. She was widowed at the age of 25 with 3 young children, in London, thousands of miles away from her family and friends in Jamaica and somehow just made it work. She met my dad in her late thirties and created this fabulosity that you see today 😉 But listening to her hard earned wisdom on life has made me a better wife and one day mother.

Violette Sproul, Founder of Femfessionals. I met her at a conference a few years back and was immediately in awe of her honesty when it came to managing business and life. I asked a question pertaining to timing and when to have children and she flat out told me, “There’s no good time…just do it. You’ll make it work somehow.” She’s been one of my mentors and sounding boards ever since.

My business coach, Kimberly Pitts is my idol. She is operates her business, marriage and motherhood in such excellence and is just an all around phenomenal woman. She is able to look at my business in such a different way and makes sure that I have all the tools necessary to be successful. She goes above and beyond what I pay her for because she believes in me understands that my success is her calling card. When I’m successful, SHE’s successful. Amazing woman

4. One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Go for it! I chose this road because I saw something missing in the marketplace. I believe the world is as nuts as it is because the people who are called to make the necessary changes are chained to the wrong job. If you have a desire to something, do it. The world needs your gifts, talents and abilities!

Feature - Styled By Dionne Dean

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I’ll be traveling the world with my husband and babies buying beautiful pieces for my online store. I’ll have a show produced by the Property Brothers where we go to run down stores and smelly thrift stores and turn them into high end boutiques (think the British show ‘Mary Portas-Queen of Shops). Probably have a daytime Emmy and be back home in South Florida with a condo on Biscayne. My heart’s desire is to be an ex-Pat and spend half the year in London or Dusseldorf and the other half in South Florida.

#FearlessWoman Feature | Ruby of Ruby Ella Photography + Brown Girl With A Camera

March 20, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

I met today’s #FearlessWoman back in college and to our surprise we reconnected, thanks to social media, a few months ago to work together on a project. Ruby Melton, the woman behind the lens, has quickly taken her love for photography and storytelling and created a business that’s thriving daily! Ruby’s images have been displayed on Travel Noire, Jetsether, and she’s been featured on Geotraveler’s Niche. Ruby has also founded Brown Girl with a Camera (#BGWAC) and Brown Guys with a Camera (#BGYWAC) in hopes to empower, “connect and celebrate both women and men of color photographers worldwide.”

From lifestyle, travel, head-shots, and more this Maryland native captures it all! Being able to tell a story through images is something I will forever be a fan of. Take a read below to find out even more about this Maryland based photographer and entrepreneur on a mission.

Ruby Ella Photography

What’s a typical day for Ruby?

A typical day starts out around 7 a.m., as my boyfriend is getting ready for work my son is either up or close to it. Once he’s wide awake, I clean and feed him and we watch some of his favorite shows together. Since I work from home and have my son during the day, I have to be very organized if I am to accomplish anything. I refer to my journal to see what’s on the agenda for the week and for the day and start hammering out each task. My son usually takes a nap right before noon and that gives me free time to answer emails, update my blog and post to social media. Once he’s wake I’m back on mommy duty until my boyfriend gets home from work. I get a lot of work done late at night.

What inspired you to create Ruby Ella Photography & @browngirlwithacamera ?

Ruby Ella Photography was born out of a nickname my volleyball coach gave me in college. One day she just started calling me Rubella, which is short for Ruby + Cinderella, and it caught on. Fast forward to when I was deciding on a name for my photography business, I thought it would be cool to use the nickname my coach gave me but add the “y” back to my first name. Thus, Ruby Ella Photography was born. I’ve always loved taking pictures and documenting parts of my life always appealed to me – this was way before there was a thing called social media. I knew it was time to step out on faith and start my own business when I was working on my own thing more than working on what I was getting paid to do.

I created Brown Girl With A Camera within weeks of returning from a volunteer trip with Girls Going Global in Costa Rica. I accompanied the non-profit as a chaperon and photographer on their yearly trip. I’m a huge Instagram head and follow a lot of photography themed accounts. The more accounts I came across the more I saw the lack in diversity for those featured. I realized how cool would it be to create something just for women of color photographers. I wanted to give us a bigger voice, a space where we could be celebrated, inspired and uplifted. Since its inception we’ve hosted meet-ups in NYC, D.C., and Johannesburg, SA.

Ruby Ella Photography

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

Serena Williams is the epitome of what driven looks like. She has all of the traits that I want to embody, like discipline, focus and a great work ethic. Coupled with her raw talent she is a force to be reckoned with.

Evita Robinson, creator of Nomadness Travel Tribe. She’s created an astounding travel community that truly embodies the word family. She’s the definition of the woman who didn’t take no for an answer. I had the opportunity to do a short film where I followed her around for a day as she and her team were putting on their 3rd Year Tribe Anniversary party in NYC. It was an amazing experience!

Danielle Finney is an amazing natural light photographer out of D.C. I came to know of her last year after I created #BGWAC and I’ve been a fan ever since. She is where I’d like to be in 3 to 5 years. Very business savvy and her brand has truly become a staple.

@THE_BGWAC is a space where women of color photographers can be celebrated, inspired and uplifted.

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Trust and believe in yourself and what you are setting out to achieve. The journey will have highs and lows and on the lows and that’s when you have to remember the most why you’re doing it in the first place.

Ruby Ella Photography.jpg - Images

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would love to continue to make an impact as an advocate for women of color photographer’s through #BGWAC, expand to other platforms and collaborate with brands and organizations that are in line with our values. I have a huge heart for giving back and would like to help mentor the#BGWAC in the making. My goal is to be a go-to lifestyle and travel photographer and a public speaker, using my story to inspire women alike world wide.

#FearlessWoman Feature | Krystal of The Feisty House

March 17, 2015 by Whitney Leave a Comment

Today’s #FearlessWoman feature comes from the lifestyle blogger and budding entrepreneur, Krystal Scott. The author of The Feisty House lives with her husband and new baby girl Maya in New York. She’s been a virtual source of inspiration for me for a while now. Her lifestyle blog has several motivational posts, natural hair and makeup tips, thought provoking interviews and more.

Check out this Fearless Woman Feature with Krystal Scott, author of @thefeistyhouse. #FWIAM

Krystal has a natural zest for life and it shows through her writing, photos, and how she lives day to day. Her entrepreneurial plans are inspiring and I can’t wait to see what’s next for her! Find out more about Krystal in her interview below.

The Feisty House Feature

What’s a typical day for Krystal?

My days are a bit insane! I’ve been trying to wake up earlier in the day (so I can exercise), but my average wake time is about 7:30 AM. Then I get ready for work, grab breakfast and pack a lunch. I try to be out the door by 9:00 AM. I arrive at work at 9:30 AM and I work nonstop until my lunch break. I use that time to check my blog emails, do a quick check-in on social media, etc. I schedule my blog posts, blog-related tweets and Facebook posts as well as my blog-related Instagrams because I don’t really have the time at work to do all of that.

I have been leaving work between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM, which is great. I head home and spend some time alone before I start dinner and do some chores. After dinner I’m usually blogging and checking email, and I do that between8:00 PM and 11:00 PM. I try to write two posts within that time, but some nights I only get to the post for the next day! Blogging and having a full-time job definitely isn’t easy, and I’m constantly adjusting my schedule so that I can blog and also have time for friends and family.

What inspired you to create The Feisty House?

I started The Feisty House in graduate school when I was learning about how to take care of my naturally kinky hair. I’d been natural my entire life (never used chemical straighteners or even hair dye), but I quickly learned that I was doing everything the wrong way! I used The Feisty House to share what I was learning about my hair with other women. Fast forward five years, and The Feisty House is much bigger than natural hair!

The blog has involved into a space where I discuss and share inspirations related to lifestyle (personal style, home life, beauty) and entrepreneurship (including my DREAM JOB Interviews with Black female entrepreneurs and blogging tips).

The Feisty House Feature

Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

I could say my aunt and grandmothers and be done so easily! These women work so much. They’ve worked hard my entire life. It’s been amazing to see with my own eyes what women can do for themselves when they put their minds to it.

I’m also inspired by Arianna Huffington (I’m reading On Becoming Fearless for the second time this year), and all the entrepreneurs I’ve interviewed for The Feisty House. It’s amazing to learn from women who have looked fear in the face and started their own businesses (and become successful!) in spite of being afraid.

“Share… You have no idea how your experience is going to affect someone.” ~ @TheFeistyHouse

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Share your stories. Because you have no idea how your experience is going to affect someone else. You may be just what another woman needs in order to make the leap into entrepreneurship. Those stories are so valuable and such an important source of strength for me and other women who are considering working for themselves.

The Feisty House - Feature

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’ll probably still be living in New York, but also living in either South Florida or Jamaica for half of the year. And I’ll be working for myself, FULL-TIME! The Lord has yet to reveal to me exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’m on the right track. I’m excited about the future!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Danielle of Danielle Lewis Beauty

March 13, 2015 by Whitney 3 Comments

Warm, down to earth and focused are just 3 words to describe today’s #FearlessWoman, Danielle Lewis. A Baltimore native, Danielle is the extremely talented makeup artists and creative force behind Danielle Lewis Beauty. I admire her realistic outlook on what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur as well as her approach to makeup artistry. She focuses on making her clients look and feel their best!

As one of Hello Beautiful’s 30 Under 30 women, it’s safe to say that Danielle’s future is very bright! I look forward to watching her grow as a business woman and as a brand. Check out her interview below to find out more about this #FearlessWoman and be inspired!

Danielle Lewis Beauty

1. What’s a typical day for Danielle?

If I’m not working I’m sending emails to contacts, doing research for upcoming projects and opportunities and pitching myself and my brand for more work. As a freelance professional, I’m never really off. My job is 50% creating new business and 50% executing and painting people. If it’s a Thursday afternoon, I’m at story time with my mini me. On Thursday’s, I only work for her after 3pm 🙂

2. What inspired you to create Danielle Lewis Beauty & That Beauty Blog?

I love beauty, products and people. I love doing makeup because it gets you close to people. I’ve talked about EVERYTHING with my clients. I also really love the “service” part of what I do. I like helping people and being a part of their transformation. I started blogging because I was talking my clients’ heads off about any & all things beauty so I figured I would run my mouth on the Internet too.

I love beauty, products & people! I really love the service part of what I do. – @DLweisDaily

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mom is number 1. She is 100% herself and I love that about her. She’s so consistent. Having her as a mom has given me the confidence to really be myself. She raised me alone and now that I’m a mom, I love and respect her even more! Super lucky she’s mine.

Oprah because she’s Oprah and because she literally came from nothing and built an empire. She’s a constant reminder that it’s not how you start but how you finish (and she’s not even finished yet)!

Myleik Teele, founder of Curlbox, because she’s a young woman making it happen and she’s honest about her journey. I’ve never met her, although I’d love to one day, but through her social media presence, she continually inspires me. Her honesty about making it happen for your self is so awesome!

4. One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

We have to value the process. I have to remind myself of that everyday. We have to stop looking for quantum leaps. I read a quote from James Dyson (on Myleik’s Instagram) about this topic that states, “…there are no quantum leaps. Only dogged persistence- and in the end you make it look like a quantum leap.” Working hard consistently, everyday is the only way to arrive at our destinations prepared for what will meet us there. Period. We all have to get comfortable with that idea.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I worked in marketing before entering the beauty industry and I’d love to return to marketing with a beauty focus. I love the idea of getting into beauty product development and seeing products through from start to finish. And of course still painting people. I would also love to be doing national beauty segments sharing beauty tips and tricks with the masses!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Cortnie of Love, Cortnie

March 10, 2015 by Whitney 12 Comments

I’m thrilled to announce the beginning of my #FearlessWoman series, in honor of Women’s History Month. I’m constantly inspired by those around me, especially strong and driven women. I’ve been blessed to meet and form pretty awesome relationships with several dynamic women who happen to be entrepreneurs as well. I think of these women as Fearless because with all they have going on in their day-to-day lives, they still manage to do so much. From working 9-5’s to running households and small businesses, raising children (and husbands, hehe), these women do it all and they do it with style.

Cortnie Hutchinson, a Columbia, MD native and now a Miami resident, definitely fits the #FearlessWoman criteria. I consider Cortnie a friend and I’ve been inspired by her drive and style since we met at the Starbucks in Columbia Mall, back in 2011. From the moment we met, I knew she was destined for greatness. Not only is Cortnie a stylish blogger, but also a driven small business owner. Her handbag line, Love, Cortnie is all kinds of fabulous! Read ahead to find out more about this #FearlessWoman making things happen.

Love Cortnie Feature - Womens History Month

1. What’s a typical day for Cortnie?

Oh boy. I wake up and wrap up any orders that are being shipped out that day. I take them to the post office and then proceed to run any other errands while I’m out. Which will basically include local fabric stores for basic supplies and possibly the grocery store. I get home and jump online for maybe an hour. Check emails and send out shipping notifications for the orders that shipped. I may do a post or 2 on social media while I’m at it. Once I’m done with that I may eat something. If I’m lucky. I’m getting better at it. Once all of that is out of the way I get to work. I’m working on new orders or maybe even a new design all together. This goes on for the majority of my day depending on how much I have to do. I usually stop in the evening around 8-ish. I’ll relax a bit, eat and watch tv. Then I’m back online. Possibly answering more emails, browsing some of my favorite sites or ordering more supplies. I’m never in bed before 12am.

2. What inspired you to create StyleLust Pages & Love, Cortnie?

My blog StyleLust Pages was originally supposed to be a way to document and share my styling escapades. It didn’t last long and quickly became a personal style blog. Love,Cortnie didn’t get its start until about 2 years later. I was in between jobs and found myself with extra time on my hands. I had always wanted to learn how to sew and it was the perfect time. I had my grandmother teach me. It was important to me that she did. She knows how to basically do anything. I’m playing around with some scrap fabric on her sewing machine in her kitchen and mentioned it would be cool to make a clutch. We ended up going to a local fabric store and grabbed some supplies and she came back and taught me.

I always had an idea of the clutch I wanted to own, but could never actually find them in stores. Clutches weren’t a big accessory at the time and the ones available were either too small, boring, all black, etc. So I figured I’d make the kind I was looking for. I asked my blog readers what they thought and encouraged me to do it. They played a big part in how and why I got started. I learned to sew, made my first clutch and then launched my first 3 styles in my Etsy shop about a week later. I’ve now done over 150 styles to date and have expanded into totes and bucket bags in the last few months.

Love Cortnie - Feature

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

My mom and my grandmother are amazing women. Amazing role models, generous and honest people. They’ve supported me since day one and I love them dearly. They occasionally play a role in new clutch designs too. Each have had bags named after them. I’ll also say Tory Burch is an inspiration. I remember reading an article about how she got her start. It also happened to be in her kitchen. I ripped that article out of the magazine and saved it. I still have it. It definitely serves as inspiration.

4. One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

Work hard, be determined, don’t settle and be consistent. If you love it you can make it your full-time job and never feel like you’re actually working. It’s an awesome feeling to be able to support yourself doing something you love and enjoy. Just go for it!

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

5 years from now I’d love to have expanded my brand even more. Each year I see growth and I want to keep growing. I’ve been able to manage doing everything on my own. In 5 years I’ll have a Love,Cortnie team, my pieces will be manufactured due to growth and I’ll be selling my products in large retail chains across the country and internationally.

Fearless Faith Friday: My Favorite Devotionals for Women

July 31, 2020 by Whitney 2 Comments

A few years ago, my relationship with God shifted. My desire to study the Bible and share His word also grew. Instead of reading a devotional and listening to gospel music here and there, and letting Sunday service be the only time I worshiped, I made a conscious decision to set aside (at least) an hour each morning for Bible study, devotion, and prayer. To this day it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

My mornings with God are precious, and it makes all the difference in how I go about each day. I have a plethora of devotionals, but there are four that I find myself referencing or re-reading often. If you’re a woman of faith looking for a new devotional, here are my favorite devotionals for women:

She Speaks

According to the author, Michelle Clark Jenkins, She Speaks provides wisdom from the women of the Bible to the modern Black woman. While not described as a devotional, the book can certainly be used as one. The author highlights 50 women from the Bible and describes each of their roles, their backgrounds, as well as their significance. There are also scripture references and life applications to accompany each story. This read is ideal for women interested in studying the history of the Bible.

The Power of a Praying Wife

This 30 chapter devotional changed the way I prayed for my husband. Each chapter highlights an area to pray for in your husband’s life. Some of the areas include his spiritual walk, his emotions, his future, his role as a father, leader, and decision-maker, and more. The author shares a brief story on how she connects with each chapter, along with a few “power tools”. These tools include related scriptures and sample prayers for wives to pray over their husbands. No matter how long you’ve been married, I highly suggest this book for all Christan wives.

Thirty-One Prayers for My Husband

This book, a compilation of prayers, is designed to challenge you to prioritize prayer. Each day there’s a topical scripture and prayer. Also included is a page to record your thoughts, feelings, and other prayer requests. It’s a great resource to accompany another devotional such as The Power of a Praying Wife.

There’s also a Thirty-One Prayers for My Wife version, co-authored by the author and her husband. My husband and I completed the books together a few years back. I am forever grateful for how both books transformed our marriage.

The 100 Most Important Bible Verses Every Woman Must Know

This easy-to-read devotional includes 100 bible verses and 300 topics ranging from joy, family, God’s promises, contentment, and complaining, to name a few. It’s ideal for morning or evening devotion time. It’s also perfect for women who want to begin or brush up on their Bible verse memorization.

Let me know if you’ve read any of the devotionals I shared. Also, if you have any devotional suggestions, do share! I’m always looking to add more to my collection.

Fearless Faith Fridays: Introduction + What to Expect

July 10, 2020 by Whitney 2 Comments

It’s time for me to make space here to share my thoughts about God and faith. I’ve wanted to share my faith and love for God here on the blog for years. I do weave my faith into most posts, but it’s time to go deeper. So, welcome to my first “Fearless Faith Friday” post.

If you follow my Fearless Woman I Am Instagram account, you may remember my “Fearless Faith Series.” Last summer, I featured seven faith-filled, purpose-driven women. These ladies shared their own faith stories plus offered words of encouragement. This powerful and impactful series was truly the start of something amazing. I plan to revive, revise, and expand that series here on the blog to make an even more significant impact.

What to Expect

On Fridays, you can expect to read my thoughts on an array of topics, each coupled with scripture and a word of encouragement. I also intend to share my testimonies and lessons learned from some of my real-life God moments. In the future, I plan to reintroduce the “Fearless Faith Features” as well.

The Purpose

My purpose is to share the goodness of the Lord with God’s people and to leave you both fulfilled and faith-filled. My goal isn’t to convert or force you to believe what I believe. This is my effort to build bridges, provide understanding, and encourage you to live a less worldly-focused and more faith-focused life.

As I prepare to move forward, I invite you to share this news with your family and friends. If you know someone who can use a quick weekly faith-based pick me up, tell them about “Fearless Faith Fridays.” I’m excited about what’s to come, and I hope you are too.

Until next week, stay safe and be blessed.

Lifestyle | 40 Everyday Women Who are Fearlessly Impacting the World

March 8, 2018 by Whitney 8 Comments

I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by remarkable women my entire life. I have seen firsthand what it means to be a phenomenal woman. My mother and grandmother are my sources of inspiration. They’re women of faith and distinction, but above all, they’re women of purpose. Watching them throughout the years has molded me into the woman I am today. It’s because of their example, I decided to create Fearless Woman I Am 3 years ago. They taught me how to celebrate, uplift and inspire other women. So today, International Women’s Day 2018, I want to celebrate 40 everyday women who are fearlessly impacting the world.

Some of these women have inspired me to try new things when it comes to fashion and style, while others have given me the best skincare advice to date! There are some women listed who have motivated me to start living a healthier and cleaner lifestyle, and others who have encouraged me to become a more intentional entrepreneur and a more strategic prayer warrior. Some of these women I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, and some I feel like I know because we engage weekly, via social media. I am also blessed to call a few of these women “my friend”, while others I have yet to meet. All in all, these women have impacted my life greatly and I’m thrilled to shine a spotlight on each of them today.
