Personal Style | Casual & Quirky Thrifted Outfit

October 29, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

Lately I’ve been stretching my wardrobe and repeating certain outfit pieces. I decided to restyle this thrifted top, worn once this week already, for errands with hubby. We ran to the mall and grocery store the other day; of course I wanted to be comfy and cute. I reached for this top, a pair of my favorite jeans and piled on the colorful (thrifted) accessories. Yet another successful thrifted outfit, check!

I thought the purse, hat and necklace was a bit much at first. After thinking about it I said to myself, why not? Having fun with accessories is what personal style is all about. So, I threw on ANOTHER accessory, my thrifted reading glasses, and bam. The outfit was complete!

It’s OK to have fun with style. Make your style personal and rock it! #wnjstyle

It may be a lot for some, but for me it works. It’s a quirky outfit that really speaks to my personal style.  When hubs saw me walk out of the room he even said, “that outfit is so you,” LOL! He gets me, that’s all that matters anyway. 😉

So tell me, what do you think about my thrifted outfit? When’s the last time you had fun with accessories and spiced up your personal style? Let me know!

Events | 3 Things I Learned from the Brown Girls Love Empowerment Brunch

October 28, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of attending the Brown Girls Love Empowerment Brunch at Aredo + Bardeo restaurant in Washington, DC. The event was hosted by the founder of Love Brown Sugar (LBS), Christina Brown. The New York based blogger is the first blogger I followed when I started my journey. I was drawn to Christina’s warm online presence and also very intrigued with her impressive resume.

I remember reading that Christina worked for Honey and Vibe Magazines and I immediately got excited. As a former journalism major with an extensive internship/work background in print media, we had a lot in common. Once I found her blog it was evident that Christina was not only an excellent writer, but she also shared my love for fashion and style. Of course, I had follow! Attending an LBS event and hearing her speak in person was truly a dream come true. Here are 3 things I learned from Christina at the Brown Girls Love Empowerment Brunch.

Brown Girls Love Brunch

1. Be Fearless | Simply put, “get over your fear and step outside of your comfort zone.” When Christina spoke those words I felt like she was literally talking to me. I’m all about being fearless and going after what I want, but there are times I’m a little nervous to step outside of what I know. Lately I’ve been ignoring the fear and going for it anyway, hence the creation of my #FearlessWomanIam movement. It’s natural to have fear, but the key is not allowing that fear to cripple you or hold you back from pursuing your purpose.

2. Be resilient | Christina stressed being flexible and being able to shift. Things don’t always go as planned and in those instances, we have to be ready to shift and change direction. In doing this, it shows that you’re capable of bouncing back from a setback. Staying the course, no matter what comes up, is a definite key to success. Christina candidly shared a few of her setbacks and to see how resilient she’s been despite those challenges is inspiring.

3. Be Confident | I think exuding confidence, in any field or industry, will take you very far. Being able to introduce yourself at an event or gathering is something Christina feels immediately showcases confidence. Something as simple as an introduction says so much about a person. It says that you take yourself seriously, you’re about your business, and it instantly makes others respect you and what you have to say. First impressions are everything.

First impressions are crucial. Make yours a good one by being confident when introducing yourself.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the brunch. Meeting Christina was a lovely and insightful experience and I’m so thankful that I was able to sit down and chat with her one-on-one about my career/blog goals. She provided a wealth of knowledge and I walked away feeling inspired, equipped and excited for my future endeavors. Be sure to keep up with Christina at LBS, Instagram (and HERE), as well as her Twitter account for more information on this and many more events. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Personal Style | Timeless All Black Outfit

October 27, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

Wearing an all black outfit is something I do at least 3 times a week. Yes, I love a pop of color here and there and I’m fond of many colors. But those all black outfits are just too easy to pass up. Whenever I wear one I feel ultra chic. All black outfits are without a doubt timeless and they’re great for just about any occasion. Having several black pieces in your closet is also a simple way to stretch your wardrobe and create several different outfit options.

OOTD - All Black Outfit

Top: Thrifted, 2nd Avenue (Serena Williams) // Hat: Thrifted, 2nd Avenue // Pants: Sejour, Nordstrom (Casual Version) // Gold Hoops: Target (Another Affordable Option)

All Black Outfit - WNJ Style

I decided to wear this all black outfit for date night with hubby. It was an easy go-to outfit, since we made plans to head out at the last minute. I decided to wear my fancy thrifted hat again because I was having yet another blah hair day. It happens, LOL!

All black outfits are timeless, chic and a wardrobe must have! #wnjstyle

One tip to remember when wearing all black is to accessorize. Have fun with it! This gives, what could easily be a boring black outfit, some personality. I opted for gold accents/accessories and nude heels this time. Simple and easy enough, right?

When wearing an all black outfit, don’t forget to accessorize! #wnjstyle

Personal Style | Tunic and Black Pants + a Bad Hair Day

October 26, 2015 by Whitney 21 Comments

Some days my hair just doesn’t want to cooperate. On those days I grab one of my caps, turbans or tams and keep it moving! That’s exactly what I’ve been doing for the past few days. I love wearing hats during the fall/winter months. I tend to get lazy sometimes with styling my hair, so they come in handy very often. This weekend while hubs and I saw a movie I reached for a comfy and cute outfit, and of course, the outfit included a hat. A tunic and black pants are the perfect go-to look for casual weekends.

Because the weather hasn’t been brutally cold, I figured wearing these ankle length joggers would be OK. I can probably style them a few more times before the weather drops drastically. The tunic, a thrifted purchase, is actually heavier than it looks. The thick cotton material kept me warm in the theater and thankfully, I didn’t have to reach for a jacket or scarf.

Casual, comfy and cute weekend outfits are the best! #wnjstyle

I can’t talk about this outfit without mentioning the gorgeous scenery. I was taken aback at the beauty of the fallen leaves and trees. As hubby and I rode through the neighborhood, he insisted we stop and take a pics. I couldn’t argue that the scenery was indeed beautiful. Seeing the burnt orange and yellow leaves on the sidewalk literally made me smile and marvel. When seasons change you have to get out and enjoy, even if it’s for an outfit shoot. 😉

#WNJBeauty | 11 Items in my Makeup Bag

October 22, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

As I mentioned in this post, I’ve been a beauty/product junkie for years! I love trying new products, but there are a few things I don’t stray from. Those are the Items in My Makeup Bag. I’ve carried a makeup/cosmetic bag since 5th grade, thanks to an unexpected “female incident” that surprised me at 10-years-old. You can read more on that here, but back to my makeup bag goodies. Here are the 11 items you can always find in there.

What's in My Makeup Bag

1. Hand Sanitizer | I’m constantly on the go, which usually means I’m eating on the go. Because of that, and the many nasty germs floating around, I carry a smell good hand sanatizer with me at all times. Before every meal, after every sneeze or blown nose, I whip it out. It’s a must!

2. Gum | I always seem to be talking to someone when I’m out. Keeping my breath fresh is imperative, so a pack of gum can always be found in my makeup bag.

3. Tissue | I have seasonal allergies, EVERY SEASON. So it’s obviously necessary have a pack of tissue on deck. If it’s a bad allergy day beware; I’ll can literally sneeze 100 times in 24-hours. #Fact

4. Vaseline | Lips must stay popping and hands cannot be ashy. I use my mini container as a back up lipgloss and I always base my hands with vaseline before I put on lotion. No ashy lips and hands on my watch!

What's in My Makeup Bag

Roller Lash Mascara (Another Option) // Clinique Foundation (Same) // Milan Lip Gloss ()

5. Lotion | Again, no ashy hands. A nice smelling lotion that keeps those hands silky smooth is the way to go.

6. Visine | Those allergies are NO JOKE. Therefore I carry a Visine with me at all times, just in case my eyes start itching or they turn red from grass, pollen or dust.

7. Facial Spray | My Mom calls me a hotbox, lol. I’m always “glistening” (sweating) while I’m out and I’ve found that the Evian facial spray is a lifesaver! 2 quick spritzes leave me instantly cool and refreshed.

8. Business Card Holder | You never know who you’ll run into, so of course I have my business card holder and cards on hand at all times. Networking never stops.

What every girl should carry in her makeup bag. #wnjbeauty

Makeup Must Haves

Evian Facial Spray (Same) // Lotion/Hand Cream, The Body Shop (Same) //Business Card Holder (Cute Option)

9. Foundation | I’m not a big makeup wearer, but on occasion I do like to put on a light layer of foundation. It smooths my skin, helps evens out my complexion and makes me look a bit more polished when I have somewhere to go.

10. Mascara | A quick mascara application does wonder for the eyes! It’s the perfect way to make those eyes pop and look, well, “on fleek”. Gosh, I hate that term, but it IS necessary to say at times.

11. Nude Lip Gloss | Nude lip gloss is a lifesaver. I don’t wear lipstick that much, but I do like to have a little shine on my lips, especially for an event or date night. A nude lip gloss will give you the instant shine you need and because it’s nude, the color goes with anything!

So tell me, what do you think about the items in my makeup bag? What’s in yours? Let me know!

Thanks for reading and be sure to share you makeup bag must haves with me below! Also, my Personal Style Linkup is still live. Feel free to join the party and add your latest outfit to the linkup. Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Personal Style | Chunky Sweaters + Leather Leggings

October 21, 2015 by Whitney 11 Comments

It’s no secret that I’m really into talking about transitional wardrobe pieces. I’m also all about chunky sweaters! With the temps dropping, it just seems like the natural wardrobe option. You may be tired of me talking about “transitional items” and such, but it is MY DUTY to share these outfit ideas with you. After all, we take personal style seriously around here, right? So here is another look at the same sweater I wore in yesterday’s outfit, styled a different way. This look is a bit more casual and chic, wouldn’t you agree?

Leather Leggings

Chunky Sweaters and Leggings

Chunky Sweaters and Leggings OOTD

In this post I mentioned my hesitation about styling these faux leather leggings. However, chunky sweaters and leather leggings have become “my thing” as of late. These leggings have quickly become a fall wardrobe staple. Since I’m already a lover of leggings, it wasn’t hard to start rotating this pair.

Another fall wardrobe must have? Chunky sweaters and leggings. #wnjstyle

This outfit is perfect for a casual date night, shopping or even a night out with your girlfriends. It’s no-fuss, chic and comfy. Investing in a sweater like this is great because as you can see, it’s super easy to transition the piece for different occasions. Of course, you can add a pair of heels to give the outfit some sass, but if you’re like me stylish animal print flats do the trick.

Personal Style | Styling Fall Florals

October 20, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

I love wearing florals all season so when thinking about fall fashion, I couldn’t wait to put together an outfit including fall florals! Today’s outfit is the perfect “work to after work event” outfit. That’s exactly where I plan to wear it this week; a networking event. Not only is the outfit comfortable, but it’s polished enough to wear in a room full of creative business women and men. The red lip is even OK because I the matte finish and deeper tone makes the red appropriate for a this event.

Sweater: Micheal Kors, Macy’s (Another Stylish Options) / Pants: Ralph Laruen, Lord & Taylor (Another Cute Option) // Flats: Micheal Kors, Nordstrom Rack

The pants, a purchase for our North Carolina road-trip this summer, were an no brainer for me. The cotton and stretch material makes them super comfortable and practical for everyday wear. I’ve been able to style these pants for several occasions. The pants are also perfect to wear during all 4 seasons.

Florals are a definite wardrobe must have this season. #wnjstyle

Big comfy sweaters are “my thing” when the temperatures drop, so adding this Micheal Kors cowl neck was a must. This sweater, a few years old, is so warm and still in style. It’s easily a garment that can be styled casually or for a bit more polished look, like this one.

Personal Style | Fall Casual Wear Must Haves + How to Wear Jeans and Graphic Tees

October 19, 2015 by Whitney 38 Comments

Happy Monday, friends! What an wonderful weekend I had. It was spent with family, 2 of my good girlfriends, DELICIOUS food and a little work. All in all, it was a fun-filed and productive weekend. If my weekends are stress-free and enjoyable, my Monday’s are usually a breeze. This feeling matches today’s casual outfit. You can’t get much more stress-free (style-wise) then wearing a pair of ripped jeans and a graphic tee.

Casual Wear - Jeans and Graphic Tees

Denim: Torrid (Another Option) // Graphic Tee: Blogalicious (Same) // Vest: TJ Maxx // Sunglasses: H&M

Casual Wear Outfit

OOTD - Casual Wear

Back in September I attended the Blogalicious conference. I saw this tee for sale and knew I had to get it! After-all, I am a blogger and the hustle of a blogger, yea…that’s very real. I figured it was the perfect casual wear wardrobe addition. In order to create the simple casual wear outfits during the fall and winter months, you should have the following wardrobe must haves:

  • Dark Washed Denim (ripped or not)
  • Black (well-made) Leggings
  • Graphic Tee
  • Black Vest
  • Ballet or Pointy Toe Flats
  • Sliver of Gold Hoop Earrings
  • Sunglasses
  • Stylish Clutch or Backpack

These items are affordable and transitional closet staples. You can create several looks from the items above, during any season, but they’re great for fall and winter styling. If ripped denim isn’t your thing, no problem. Find a pair of dark wash straight leg, skinny, boot-cut or ankle length denim, like this option (skinny jeans) or this option (trouser style).

Jeans and graphic tee’s will never go out of style. #wnjstyle
