Style | Floral Tunic Dress for the Weekend

August 21, 2015 by Whitney 7 Comments

Today’s outfit is the kind I’d wear on any given sunny, summery Friday. I love the floral design, the style and length – all perfect and very “me”. The tunic dress style is perfect for a casual, laid back summer day. Adding the Betsy Johnson backpack adds even more personal style to the outfit. Stylish backpacks like this one have become a must-have for me this season. I love the convenience of a backpack and there are so many styles to pick from at stores like TJMaxx, Marshall’s and Forever 21.

Tunic Dress

I love this tunic dress. It’s extremely comfortable and can be worn during all seasons. It’s also yet another garment that can be styled for several occasions. I feel this dress, and outfit, is perfect for casual Friday’s at the office. It’s a pretty and semi-flirty dress, but the style is relaxed and chic. A pair of cute flats and a stylish bag do wonders for this outfit!

Casual Friday’s call for tunic dresses & comfy, cute flats! #wnjstyle

Going back to the backpacks – is this not the cutest one you’ve seen?! The cutsey bow and gold trim made this a no brainer purchase. I’ve started carrying this backpack with me on road trips, as well as while shopping on the weekends. It holds so much and surprisingly, it’s comfortable to carry. I find it more comfortable than a huge tote bag.

#WNJBeauty | My Current Favorite Beauty Products + 3 Beauty Secrets

August 20, 2015 by Whitney 1 Comment

I’ve been a fan of beauty products and beauty samples since I was a teen. I remember going to the beauty counters at department stores with my mom and grandmother and spritzing amazing smelling perfume on my wrists. I also enjoyed reading beauty magazines and seeing the latest beauty products to try. Not much has changed in my late 20’s; I’m still a beauty product junkie and I LOVE to try new (and safe) products. I’ve also learned a few beauty tips along the way, so today I’m excited to share both my current beauty product favorites and a few quick beauty secrets.

Current Beauty Product Favorites

  • Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub
    • I use this scrub wash every night and the small micro-beads really scrub away the dirt and grime from the day. The beads are not as harsh as I thought, which is why I’ve been using it each night. My skin feels soft and looks a lot brighter because of it.  (Target)
  • Organic Surge Refreshing Face Wash
    • I was looking for a new (and organic) daily face wash and while shopping at TJMaxx one day, I came across this product. After I read the ingredients and saw that the consistency was like a serum, I figured I’d give it a try. It’s been great and I love the way my face feels after each use. The product isn’t oily or greasy and it leaves the skin supple and really hydrated! (TJMaxx)
  • Clean & Clear Deep Cleaning Toner
    • I usually use the Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Toner but for some reason, I couldn’t find it last time I went to the store. So I opted for this brand and so far, so good. It does the job, making my skin brighter and the dark spots less noticeable. Not sure I’ll purchase it again because it does sting a little with each use. But it’s not unbearable and doesn’t damage my skin. I just prefer  the Witch Hazel, but this is an OK alternative. (Target)
The perfect year-round beauty products! #wnjbeauty

  • Biossance Drops
    • These drops were sent to me by the actual Biossance team. I am so grateful because since I’ve been using the drops (day and night) my skin has been LOVING it! I also put a few drops on my neck and after I rub it in, my skin is silky smooth and the complexion is ultra radiant! I’ll be posting a full review of the product next week, but I had to add it to my list because it’s been a lifesaver! (Biossance)
  • Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream
    • My mom has been an Olay fan for years so when she suggested this moisterizing face cream, I knew I had to try it. The bottle is very small, but I’ve learned that a small about on my face and neck day and night goes a long way. I love the smell of the product and the fact that it’s non-sticky is a plus! My complexion glows and the dark spots have continued to fade. I’ll definitely be purchasing again! (Target)
  • Glam Glow Tinglexfoliant Treatment Mask
    • When I have a break out I reach for this and it literally works like magic! When I put the mask on my blemish/breakout, it’s literally minimized within 24-hours. Now this mask is strong and has a strong odor, but it works! I use it sparingly and only on the areas needed. A little bit of this goes a long way as well. (Sephora)

Beauty Products

As far as my quick beauty tips, I’ve got 3:

  • Wash your face every night, every if you’re tired. Nobody wants to go to bed with gunk and grime on their face, right? Even if you’re dead tired, wash that face or at least use a makeup/cleansing wipe to get off all the dirt and impurities. Your skin will thank you!
  • Use a mask at least once a week (or at least once every 2 weeks). Masking helps deep clean your face. Even if you don’t want to mask your entire face, try sections. It’s a great way to “reset” your skin. Masks can help eliminate impurities from the skin, tighten and even tone!
  • Drink lots of water! I’ve never been one to shy away from water, but over the course of my late 20’s I’ve been increasing my H2O intake. It clears up acne, makes your skin less dull and dry, and does wonders for hydrating your skin. Who doesn’t want those amazing benefits??

Personal Style | Casual Wear Outfit from Nordstrom Rack

August 19, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

I’ve mentioned before that this summer has been quite the #CasualSummer as far as style. Sure, I can dress up with the best of them when necessary, but on most days you can catch me in a comfy and cute casual wear outfit like this one. I won’t bore you about how important I think it is to be comfortable and fashion-forward when dressing. I think by now, you get how important that is to me, LOL. However, I will say that casual wear is more than just leggings and denim. These pants are the perfect example!

The pants in today’s outfit are made of sweatpants material; so perfect for casual wear! The pants are also straight leg which makes them chic, not frumpy. Adding a pair of sparkly flats and a fun top gives the outfit personality without being too over the top.

All of these style elements make this OOTD a contender for perfect casual wear options. I can easily pair the pants with another top and I can do the same with the top. Just another example of how re-styling items saves money and expands your wardrobe.

Personal Style | Blue and White Calvin Klein Jumpsuit

August 18, 2015 by Whitney 20 Comments

For months I’ve been all about jumpsuits. They’re comfortable, chic and fashion-forward. Also whatever the occasion, a jumpsuit is the perfect garment. I’ve worn this jumpsuit to a fancy party and a corporate function. I actually have an event this weekend to attend and guess what? I plan to wear this jumpsuit! No surprise there, huh?

I purchased this jumpsuit at a Macy’s event a few months back. I was skeptical about the purchase because of the print. I was unsure if the print would flatter me, but when I tried it on I was sold! I walked around the fitting room for a while, just to make sure it was comfortable. I also sat down in the garment; you always have to do the sit test, right?! I figured the jumpsuit could be worn for several occasions and styled with heels or sandals. After leaving the dressing room, I had 3 separate occasions in mind to wear the jumpsuit. Clearly, this purchase was more than validated.

Jumpsuits are the perfect wardrobe addition; they can be styled all season! #wnjstyle

Style | Black Maxi Dress & a Statement Necklace

August 17, 2015 by Whitney 42 Comments

I’ve had this thrifted black maxi dress for years now. I’ve worn it to a few events and every time I style it I remember how comfortable and versatile it is. It’s one of those all purpose dresses that I’m so glad I have in my closet. Every girl need an all purpose dress (or 2) in their wardrobe, right?

Black Maxi

I love how flowy and free this dress is and the lightweight material is an added bonus. For a Sunday afternoon filled with errands, a walk in the park and possibly dinner with hubs, this is the perfect outfit. The sandals give the dress a more relaxed feel and the gorgeous necklace, purchased this weekend at a jewelry fair in Gaithersburg, MD adds the perfect boho chic element. When I saw the necklace hanging there, I knew I had to add it to my collection. Before I could even think to purchase it, hubs had surprised me and purchased it as a birthday gift. How thoughtful?!

Add a gorgeous statement necklace to any plain maxi dress for instant pizzazz! #wnjstyle

The dress is also perfect for year round styling. With a cardigan and closed toe flats, or even a pair of ankle boots, this dress is fall-ready. I can even picture a ankle length duster or kimono being worn over the dress. While that may hide the ruffle and lady-like detailing, it’s still adds style and functionality to the garment.

National Thrift Store Day 2015 | 5 Must Shop Thrift Stores in Howard County, MD

August 17, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

In case you didn’t know, today is National Thrift Store Day 2015. Of course I had to share something thrift worthy, hence today’s (thrifted) outfit post. But I also wanted to share my favorite thrift stores here in Howard County, MD. I know many of you live in the DMV (DC/MD/VA) area so I hope this list is helpful. If you’re not from the area but find yourself here one day, be sure to check out the following thrift stores!

5 Must Shop Thrift Stores in @HowardCountyMD, according to @whitneynicjames!

Click To Tweet

Top Thrift Stores in Howard County | national thrift store day 2015

1. 2nd Avenue Village Thrift (Columbia, MD) This location is my go-to spot for just about any and everything! The staff is always friendly and familiar, the store is very well organized, no bad odor, and they have an amazing coat and purse section. I’ve been shopping here for years and they haven’t disappointed me yet! Location: 6515 Dobbin Road Columbia, MD 21045

2. 2nd Avenue Village Thrift (Laurel, MD) When I want some really unique jewelry pieces or hubby is looking for work shirts, we head here. It’s the same chain as the first, just a much larger selection and even more amazing finds. This location is great for housewares too! Location: 201 Fort Meade Rd. Laurel, MD 20707

3. Laurel Thrift (Laurel, MD) The store is a bit smaller than the first two locations, but their sections are plentiful. You have to really examine items very carefully while shopping here. Sometimes, like any thrift store, the items look to be in good condition but at a second glance there maybe a stain or missing button. If you’re up for the challenge, visit Laurel Thrift and I’m sure you will find something great (to keep or add to your vintage shop). My favorite thing about this location is the prices and sales. They have AMAZING price points and there’s a sale on a certain color every day of the week. Location: 9880 Washington Blvd N, Laurel, MD

4. Goodwill (Columbia, MD) I’m not really thrilled with the selection for plus size shoppers at this location, but when hubby or little sis wants to thrift this is where we go. The men’s section is decent; a lot of nice slacks and button ups. The regular size/junior sections are nice too. At any given day you can find GREAT deals from Mossimo, Style & Co. and Old Navy just to name a few. Location: 9097 Snowden River Pkwy, Columbia, MD 21046

5. Savers (Owings Mills) This location is not in Howard County BUT it’s close enough, and the store is AMAZING! I ventured here last month and I think this location has become one of my favorites for books, housewares, and plus size garments. The store is brand new so it’s organized, clean, and the staffers are all very pleasant. The prices are moderate, but I don’t mind spending a little more if need be because the quality of items here is exceptional. Check out my thrift haul video (above) and see what goodies I purchased from here last month! Location: 9800 Reisterstown Rd. Owings Mills, MD

So tell me, will you be thrift shopping anytime soon? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by and until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Social Media | Why You Shouldn’t Follow Everyone on Social Media

August 14, 2015 by Whitney 19 Comments

Lately, I’ve been really paying attention to who I follow on social media. I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t make sense to follow everyone on every platform. There are very few people I choose to follow on multiple outlets. Nothing personal, it’s just my preference. It’s simple; I like to follow people who are positive, encouraging (without being preachy or redundant) stylish and helpful. If you can give me that on all platforms, great! If not, I’ll pick the platform that inspires me most and follow there. That being said, here are 3 reasons you don’t need to follow everyone everywhere.

d (2)

1. It can be overwhelming. Have you ever followed someone who posts the same images and posts, 24-7, on every outlet?? The redundancy is a lot and while some people prefer that posting tactic, I’m not a fan. I like pictures and quotes, but not the same ones on every social media outlet. Pay attention to the posting patterns of those you follow and decide which outlet you can “deal with”.

2. It can become a distraction. Following someone everywhere can be a bit distracting. Recently I started noticing that I was missing out on some pretty good posts/announcements on Twitter. After sifting through my news feed, I saw there was a lot of “fluff” on my feed. That was causing a distraction and at the end of the day, I was missing out on some pretty helpful content. Check your feed and be sure you’re not being distracting and missing out on valuable content.

3. Every social media outlet has a purpose. I like Instagram for visuals, Twitter for conversation/engaging, Facebook for a little bit of everything, Pinterest for a recipe, home decor, and #OOTD ideas/pics, and Periscope for live interaction. Those who use each outlet “the right way”, I appreciate. Decide what you like to see from those you follow and pick your favorite way to follow.

3 Reasons You Don’t Need to Follow Everyone Everywhere on Social Media #socialmedia

So tell me, do you follow everyone everywhere on social media? If so, why or why not? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by and as always, feel free to keep up with me this weekend on social media. You don’t have to follow everywhere though, LOL! Pick your fave outlet and I’ll be there. Have a wonderful weekend and until Monday, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

5 Reasons You Don’t Have Success While Thrift Shopping

August 13, 2015 by Whitney Leave a Comment

Thrift shopping is so much fun, but it can be a l o n g and sometimes unsuccessful process. Why? I know 5 reason you don’t have successful thrift shopping trips, for sure. Because I want you (all) to be successful thrifters, let’s get right to it!

Successful Thrift Shopping

5 reasons you’re not successful when thrifting. #thriftwithnic

Click To Tweet

1. You’re not being patient. Patience is the #1 thing you need to have a successful thrifting trip. Rushing to find that perfect item just won’t cut it. Set aside a certain time for the thrift trip, take your time and stroll down each and every aisle. Look on all the racks, try things on, snap pics, and enjoy the process.

2. You’re staying in one section. I like to call myself a section hopper. I constantly hop from one section to the next while thrifting. The men’s section is actually one of my favorite places to shop for over-sized sweaters and button ups. Another section to check out is lingerie. You can find some AMAZING kimono-like pieces for every day styling.

3. You’re not using your imagination. There are times when I see an item and think, “what the heck can I do with this??” Use your imagination and think outside the box. A vintage belt that’s too small to fit your waist is the perfect item to wear as a necklace. 😉

Successful Thrift Shopping

4. You’re not thrifting on the right days. Most thrift stores have sale/discount days. Be sure to ask the associates when those days are and make a mental note. They may even have a flyer or card with that information listed. Grab one and keep it in your wallet or car for future reference.

5. You don’t have the right attitude/mindset. When thrifting, BE POSITIVE and BE OPEN! It may take a few trips to really get the hang of it, but once you got it you’re good. Be positive while shopping and open to the possibilities of finding unique (and sometimes one of a kind) items.

Thrift shop with a purpose and you’ll have a much more enjoyable experience! #thriftithnic

So tell me, do you have successful thrift shopping trips? What are some tips to make thrifting easier and more enjoyable? Let me know!

As always, thanks for dropping by today! I have a thrifting cheat sheet I’d like to send you so be sure to sign up here. Also, there will be a #ThriftWithNic announcement coming soon. Be on the look out for that! Until tomorrow, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
