Lifestyle | My Cycle Survival Kit with Kotex

June 19, 2015 by Whitney 6 Comments

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #CycleSurvival #CollectiveBias

Let’s get a little personal, shall we? Ever since I was 11 years-old I’ve been a woman. Well, in the scientific sense of the word, it’s true. I was the only 5th grader with a purse full of feminine products. At the time, I thought it was the most dreadful thing EVER! As the years went on, preparing and carrying my feminine kit around was no big deal. But when I reached high school, things changed. My periods got worse, much heavier and I had a few embarrassing moments due to, well…”accidents”.

Once I entered my 20’s, it was almost unbearable. After several trips to the doctor, nights of moaning and curling up on the cold floor in a ball, rocking back and forth crying, I found out I suffered from extremely heavy periods and the doctor’s worried I’d have endometrioses. Thankfully, I didn’t and was finally able to get things under control, thanks to finally figuring out the right birth control method for my body. Now, my monthly cycle is a breeze and thanks to U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners I don’t fear those accidents anymore!

Walgreens - Kotex

WNJ Blog - Kotex, Walgreens

Now that I’m surviving my cycle, I am beyond thrilled to have my life back. I always carry my feminine survival kit with me once a month; I even have one in my car and one at work. Being a woman is tough sometimes, but it’s also a blessing.  When it comes to our time of the month, U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners are a must have. Adding them to my survival kit has been a lifesaver. I feel comfortable wearing them and the price (between $5.99 and $7.99) is very reasonable. I feel protected during the days leading up to my cycle, as well as those 2 or 3 days after. They’re lightweight, not bulky, and can fit in your purse with so much ease.

I believe that as women, we’re equipped with an undeniable amount of strength. We deal with and take on so much and we always have to be prepared. So what’s in my Survival Cycle Kit?

1. U by Kotex Curves® and U by Kotex® Lightdays Liners

2. Chocolate (preferably Goobers)

3. Water

4. Fashion Magazines

5. Pain Meds (to cure the stomach, back, and pelvis pain)

Thrifted Style | 5 Thrift Shopping Tips for the Summertime & Beyond + a Thrift Haul

June 18, 2015 by Whitney 5 Comments

I think I finally got my thrifting mojo back! Don’t get me wrong, I still love thrifting. But I have not been excited to thrift for months. Because I’m (still) going through a minimalist wardrobe (and lifestyle) phasing period, I haven’t been that into purchasing random pieces. And to be honest, that’s one thing I’m guilty of when thrifting. I’ve been known to thrift the most random pieces from time to time.

Nonetheless, I have made up in my mind which items I need and I was able to thrift quite a few of them. From housewares, books, accessories, and clothing, thrifting for necessities has become easier because I’m clear on what I want and need. Here are a few quick and easy thrift shopping tips for the summertime, and beyond!

thrift shopping tips

1.  Create a Thrift List (NEEDS, WANT & TRENDS TO TRY) | I have done a thrift list for years, but making the 3 columns within the list has been a great addition. The items I need (i.e. black purse, long gold chain necklace and kitchen items) are the items I make a point to look for first. The want list may consist of earrings and books; items I don’t really need but want to have. Trends to try are the items like overalls and fringe. I’ve seen them on others and I want to thrift the trend before committing to making a department store purchase for them. So, I add them to the list and see if I can thrift the items to give them a try. This section is the last section I shop for.

2. Throw it in the Cart | If you see something you like or something you maybe kind of like, throw it in the cart! If you leave it on the rack and try to come back to it, I highly doubt it’ll be there when you come back. Throw it in the cart if it catches your eye and sort it out later.

Thrift Tip: See something you might like? Throw it in the cart and evaluate later. #thriftwithnic

3. Try it On | Another reason I say throw it in the cart is because when you try items on, you’ll be able to decipher what you want to keep or not. I always suggest trying items on when thrifting, even if it’s trying on a dress in the aisle over your clothes. Not all thrift stores allow returns/exchanges, so TRY IT ON in order to avoid that yucky buyer’s remorse feeling.

4. Re-evaluate | Once you’ve tried everything on and know what you’re going to purchase, reevaluate one more time to be absolutely sure. Check your list and check off the items you’ve found. Also, price check. When I reevaluate towards the end of my trip, I usually ask myself if I’d really pay “x” amount for an item. I then figure out 3 ways to wear or use the item.

5. Bring Cash | Cash is king. Most thrift stores accept credit cards, but paying with cash is so much easier. It also helps keep you on target with your thrifting budget. If I bring $40 cash and I know that was my budget for the trip, I only spend that money. I don’t even reach in my purse for my card. It’s a mind thing, and it really does work!

5 quick and easy thrifting shopping tips for any season. #thriftwithnic

So tell me, what are some of your thrift shopping tips? What’re your fave items from my thrift haul? Let me know!

#FearlessWoman Feature | LaQuisha Hall of Couture’d Confidence

June 17, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

When I met LaQuisha Hall, I knew she was destined for greatness. There was no doubt in my mind that I had met a #FearlessWoman. This strong willed, intelligent and lovely survivor is the CEO of Couture’d Confidence and has had much success in the world of pageantry over the past few years. She is also a highly sought after speaker and confidence coach.

I look to her for inspiration on many endevours, and have worked side by side with her or several occasions. LaQuisha is an educator and takes shaping the minds of our young women and men very seriously. She’s my sister in the spirit and someone I know will be in my circle for years to come. Enjoy getting to know LaQuisha a little more and be inspired!

LaQuisha Hall - Couture'd Confidence

What’s a typical day for LaQuisha?

I get up before the sun daily (even on the weekends!) to pray, blog and answer emails. I am an English teacher by day in Baltimore City Public Schools. After school, I can be found mentoring a group of girls via my Queendom T.E.A. program, in a rehearsal or bible study for church (Open Door Fellowship in Randallstown, Maryland). I also enjoy spending time with my handsome husband, reading books, especially novels by Jodi Picoult, writing and eating a pint of Talenti icecream, lol.

What inspired you to create Couture’d Confidence?

I was inspired by all that I have been able to achieve. I wanted to create an overarching umbrella for all that I do. I am an inspirational speaker, a mentor via my Queendom T.E.A. program, a fashion stylist inspired by my blog, Corner Curl Girl, and an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence implemented through my annual ceremony, SheRose Awards. In all three of these areas my ultimate goal is teach Couture’d (custom-made) Confidence (self-esteem and self-empowerment) which is the name of all 3 of these in one.

3. Who are your top 3 women inspirations, famous or non-famous, and why?

Angel Richardson, CEO of Life Coaches Rock, is a personal friend of mine. She inspires me because she successfully acts on any dream or idea she has and encourages others to do the same. She cheers me on with sincerity when I achieve my own goals. I love her spirit, smile and fierce fabulousity!

Stacia Pierce, CEO of Life Coach 2 Women, is a millionaire entrepreneur who has successfully trained others. Angel (who I just discussed) told me I should follow her. When I did, I fell in love! Soon after following her on social media, I met her in New York. She had no idea who I was but after talking with her she agreed to send me package. About a week later, I received a box full of her some of her coaching materials. Shortly afterwards, I won one of her contests which allowed me free entry to her Florida Success Tour this year. I am looking forward to her annual Women’s Success Conference this summer!

I know you asked me to only choose 3 individual women, but my final choice has to be all women I have encountered who have survived and conquered sexual abuse and domestic violence. These women inspire to keep moving forward with strength and power. They encourage me because sometimes I feel that the stories of abuse have been told enough. Then, I meet another woman who has not yet shared…

One piece of advice you have for women entrepreneurs?

As Kris Kross used to sing, “jump, jump”! Often entrepreneurs will stand by to contemplate and entertain a variety of thoughts. Should they pursue their dream? Should they invest in publishing a book? Should they call someone for advice or help? Is now the time to start a new project idea? The answer to all of these questions is an emphatic yes! Jump, with or without a parachute because even if the landing hurts, you will learn how to do a better jump the next time.

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

A #FearlessWoman is one who can encourage and empower other fearless women. She gives compliments to other women as she passes them on the street. Fearless women overcome past catastrophes with present triumphs and educate others how to do the same. She wears her crown daily and knows how to pray if it begins to tilt. She apologizes when she is wrong and is empathetic to those who are not in the same place she is.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I will be a retired teacher doing what I love full-time: instilling confidence in women and girls. I will successfully launch the Couture’d Confidence clothing and accessory line. I will have at least 3 published books and maybe 1 child (lol).

Style | What to Wear to Work + Personal Style Linkup

June 15, 2015 by Whitney 55 Comments

Happy Monday! This weekend was a busy one, thanks to my now 13-year-old sister. Her birthday was yesterday and she enjoyed a weekend long celebration. It all started with her Sky Zone party with a few friends on Friday night and ended with a family dinner at the Melting Pot last night. Now. she’s headed to Vegas with my parents to continue the celebration. Pretty sweet 13th birthday package, huh?

Needless to say, I am exhausted…LOL! But all for a good cause, so I’m all smiles. When Monday came, early this morning at 5 a.m., I knew I want to wear something simple and quick for work; preferably minimal ironing. So I decided my new thrifted dress was the perfect solution for the age ‘ol question, what to wear to work?

Dress: Jessica London, Thrifted (Savers | Owings Mills, MD) // Flats: Steve Madden (similar) // Cross Earrings: H&M

Thrifted Dress - Wear to Work

This lightweight Jessica London dress was purchased this weekend at Savers thrift store (in Owings Mills, MD). When I saw the dress, I knew I had to at least try it on. It fit, 3 or 4 women complimented me while trying it on in the aisle, and hubby was a fan. Above all the dress made me feel and look great. SOLD!

Pairing this dress with minimal accessories was key. The print is already bold  and the fringes along the dress make for amazing detail. So a pair of earrings, cute flats, and possibly a clutch were all I needed to complete the look. When styling a dress with loud prints, be minimal with the accessories; let the garment speak for itself.

Speaking of printed dresses, my favorite linkup from last week is Adrienne’s beautiful kaftan. The print is stunning and the way she effortlessly styled the garmnent deserves an applause. I LOVE Adrienne’s feminine and cute style and whenever she links up, I’m inspired and excited to see what she’s wearing! She is one stylish woman who enjoys wearing prints, fabulous heels and pretty things.

In case you need some help figuring out what to purchase with your $50, here are the two items I ordered (c/o Minted). I figured hubby and I could use the two prints to hang in our new apartment. We’re not moving in until the end of the summer, but we’ve seen the space and are really excited to decorate!

The 1st print I ordered was just the print; I want to add my own picture frame to it. I think it’s really cute and will be perfect to sit on our table near the front door. The last print includes one of hubby’s favorite scriptures. I decided to have that one framed and I ordered a larger size. I know we’ll be hanging that one on the wall.

So tell me, what would you do with a $50 Minted credit? What do you think about my orders? Let me know!

#FearlessWoman Feature | Breanne Stewart of Breanne Stewart Ministries

June 10, 2015 by Whitney 8 Comments

Today is the start of the #FearlessWoman Summer Series! I’m pleased to introduce today’s feature, Breanne Stewart. I’ve been friends with this strong, faithful and purpose driven wife since my family and I moved to Columbia, MD about 5 or so years ago. She actually interviewed and hired me for my 1st job in the area at Bakers Shoes in Colimbia Mall. When we met, I remember thinking what an independent and hard working young lady she was. I admired her work ethic and care free spirit, but I always knew Bakers wasn’t the end for her. I knew she had more to do and I knew her story was just beginning.

Watching her grow has been a joy and I’ve learned so much from her along the way. She is now a mother of two beautiful children, a wife, and an entrepreneur. Most imporrantly, Breanne is a woman of God who is serious about God’s business. I hope that you are inspired by her mission and life as much as I’ve been. And if you’re in the DMV area, I strongly suggest you attend her upcoming play and women’s conference. Details below…enjoy and be inspired!

Breanne Stewart - #FearlessWoman

What’s a typical day for Breanne?

A typical day for me starts at 7 a.m. I thank God for another day and I pray for my family, friends, and my church. I also call or text my mom good morning and talk/text for about 10 minutes about how Good God is and we share our prayer requests. Afterwards, I make my children breakfast and sing to them every morning.

Around 5 or 6 p.m., I start cooking dinner for my husband and children. After dinner I give my kids a bath, and we have reading time. Sometimes they go right to sleep and other times they love to stay up. The nights they stay, up we usually watch a movie in bed and that works every time! After my children fall asleep, I spend bonding with my husband; we talk about our day, watch movies, and  make each other laugh.

By the time I fall sleep its about 12 or 1 a.m. and before I close my eyes, I pray again to God for thanking him for my life and the lives of all the people  love.

What inspired you to start Breanne Stewart Ministries?

What inspired me to Create Breanne Stewart Ministries, was based off a vision that God gave me overnight. He told me that He wanted me to create a women’s ministry that will empower, inspire, and motivate women of all races, and nationalities. After that encounter i had with God, i realized that this was something i had to do, or i wouldn’t have peace of mind.

What is your definition of a #FearlessWoman?

My definition is a woman who does not care about what other people think. A #FearlessWoman accepts that she may not always get it right, but she will get up and try again. In order to be a #FearlessWoman, you have love and accept yourself for who you are. Never settle for less or dim your light to make others feel comfortable to be around you. Most importantly, a #FearlessWoman must know they are fearfully and wonderfully made by God.

FearlessWoman Feature

Advice for women entrepreneurs.

Never to give up. There will be times you question yourself, as well as times others will question if you are the real deal. You will also realize that the same friends you had before when you were dreaming about your business or ministry are no where to be found.  It’s okay…it may hurt a little, but you will be okay. Now that your dream has transformed into your reality, you must know and understand not everyone will applaud or celebrate you. Sometimes your haters can be closer than your friends; it can be your own family. They want to keep you in the past, because it makes them feel more comfortable. Truth is, in order to grow and go to  the next level, you have to be willing to be uncomfortable, that is the only way you will grow and see your full potential.

Who are your top 3 women inspirations?

I actually have 4, lol…

My Mother – She has taught me how to be strong and to walk by faith, not by sight. She is not only my mother, but she’s also my teacher. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without her. She was the first person who introduced me to God, and encourage me to have an active relationship with him.

My Godmother/Mentor – Rev. Lisa Robinson has taught me to never apologize for my gift and anointing. She’s also taught me to embrace and accept who I am in Christ. She always tells me that, “no one has a heaven or hell to put you in, so do you.” If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be the #FearlessWoman I am today.

My Best Friend – Amanda Rhead has taught me to be selfless, humble, and giving. She has shown this to me, by expressing the same qualities to me. Before we became friends, I was a very selfish person, I truly believe God put her in my life for a reason. She is most giving person I know, and I thank God for her every day.

Iyanla Vanzant– Minister, author, poet, and life coach; she’s amazing! Through watching her teachings and reading her books, she has shown me how to forgive others and what it truly means to forgive them. I’ve learned from her that forgiveness sets you free, it doesn’t mean what a person did to you was okay, but you refuse to let that person have power over you. I have learned that forgiveness does not come naturally, it something that has to be taught. Learning how to forgive saved my life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I see Breanne Stewart Ministries on the road, traveling from city to city, state to state  spreading the word of God. I see my husband and I owning our first home, and having another baby. I also see myself receiving many awards, including being on the award show “Black Girls Rock“. I see myself just growing closer to God, where I don’t need or want for nothing. I believe God will fulfill these promises to me and my family, in Jesus name.

#FearlessWoman - Breanna Stewart

“I praise you because I’m fearfully & wonderfully made…” Psalms 139:14

What’s next for Breanne and how can we keep up with you?

I have an upcoming play on June 20th and I’m really excited about that! I also have a women’s empowerment conference, “Celebrate Me or Not, Here I Come”,  on July 10th. It’s going to be an awesome experience! Be sure to follow along with me at Breanne Stewart Ministries for more information. I hope to see you all there!

#WNJDrves | Road Trip Essentials + Traveling with the 2015 Kia Optima SX

June 9, 2015 by Whitney 17 Comments

My husband and I are on the road at least two weekends a month. Often, we’re road tripping to Delaware to visit Darrius’ side of the family. That’s exactly where we were this weekend; we had a great time! Our niece graduated from high school Saturday, so of course, we were front and center, cheering her on and showing our support. Without hesitation, we loaded up the 2015 Kia Optima SX, as well as our road trip essentials.

Road Trip Essentials (1)

A reliable and safe car is the #1 must-have when traveling on a road trip. This Remington Red Kia was just that! One of my favorite features was the rear-view camera; it’s beneficial when parking and backing out of a parking space. The power-folding outside mirrors also came in handy while traveling. The mirrors alert you by blinking and making a faint beeping sound to tell you when it’s safe to make a move. This feature is one I’d like to see in all cars; it’s so necessary!

Must have road-trip essentials. #wnjdrives

Another remarkable feature is the Infinity sound system. Cruising with music while road tripping is a must, and the sound system in the 2015 Optima is on point! From my homemade mix CD’s to the radio to Sirus XM, hubby and I grooved the entire time. The sound pouring from the speakers is crisp, and I could even listen to my iPhone playlists through the speakers.

Road Trip Essentials

Aside from a safe and reliable car and good music, here are my five must-have road trip essentials:

1. Sunglasses | When traveling, sunnies need to be on deck, especially during the summer months. Sun visors in the car can help, but wearing sunnies is better and much more stylish.

2. Hand Sanitizer | Eating and snacking on the road is a must, so be sure to pack some hand sanitizer (or wet wipes) to keep those hands nice and clean. The mini ones are great to keep in your glove compartment!

3. Phone Charger(s) | Separate phone chargers, yes, please! There’s nothing worse than your phone dying while traveling—pack at least two phone chargers, as well as an extra wall charger piece. If you have a portable charger, throw that in the bag too. Charging your phone, iPod, and other electronic devices is a must. You can never be too prepared, so pack extras!

Spacious Trunk Space!

4. Cash and Coins | If you don’t have an EZ-Pass, you need change for the tolls. Carrying $1 bills, a few $5’s and $10’s is always a good idea. Also, bring a couple of quarters and some other silver coins too. If you stop at a gas station for gas or snacks, it’s always better to pay with cash. Keep the transactions simple and quick.

5. Feminine Products | Every woman should have a few extra feminine care products to take on a road trip. You never know when you may need them, trust me.

So tell me, what are your road trip essentials? Have you ever driven a Kia? Let me know!

Thanks for reading and until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
