I made a promise to support more Black women entrepreneurs in 2019. I’m a product of a Black woman who owns and operates her own business. Life Update | I Have Androgenetic Alopecia

January 24, 2019 by Whitney 13 Comments

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I have a new look for 2019. If you haven’t seen my latest post, no worries. Let me fill you in…

In December, I was diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia. Ever since mid-October, I knew something was going on with my hair, but I was sure the shedding and thinning could be remedied rather quickly. So, imagine my surprise when my hair stylist looked at my scalp and said, “This looks like Alopecia. I want you to go to a dermatologist ASAP to find out for sure.” Immediately, I went to trusty Google to look up Alopecia. I’d heard of the condition before but wasn’t fully knowledgable about the causes, symptoms, or treatments. The images and the amount of information were extremely overwhelming. But, isn’t that always the case when you look up your symptoms or a possible diagnoses on Google?

Fast forward a week later, I’m at the dermatologists’ office, anxiously waiting to be seen. After a thorough consultation, she confirmed that I indeed had Alopecia areata, but wanted to do a biopsy and send me for blood work to figure out the cause. I’ve never had a biopsy of any kind, and I hate going for bloodwork. However, I too was eager to figure out the root cause. So, I reluctantly scheduled both appointments just a few weeks before Christmas. Two days after Christmas, I returned to my dermatologists’ office for my results – Androgenetic Alopecia. In laymen’s terms, female pattern hair loss, and in my case it’s hereditary. We discussed my treatment options, I decided how I wanted to proceed, and I started treatment the very next day.

Life with Androgenetic Alopecia

After my Biopsy

After receiving my diagnoses, I was extremely thankful that my Alopecia was not connected to any autoimmune or any other disease. Knowing that I still had hair follicles was also a relief. However, I was still unhappy with the current state of my hair. It was brittle, dry, and I was combing out clumps the size of quarters morning and night. Even when I combed my hair as gentle as possible, I could literally hear my hair breaking off. I also felt the bald spots throughout my scalp. I hated it. It was depressing and emotionally draining.

I mentioned cutting my hair to my dermatologist early on, and she told me it wouldn’t hurt or help my condition. It would, however, allow her to clearly see my hair pattern. I also shared how depressing it was for me to comb my hair, and she did agree that cutting it may help emotionally. I brought up the idea (again) to Darrius and he was all for it. Although it was ultimately my decision, and something we’d discussed weeks before, I wanted to make him aware that I was actually going through with it. So, on Monday, January 14th, with my husband and younger sister by my side, I arrived at my appointment to see Susan, a Senior Cosmetologist, and Certified Hair Loss Specialist, to cut off my hair…all of it.

Life with Androgenetic Alopecia

A Few Hours After “The Cut”

This is my new normal. It’s taking time for me to adjust, but I can honestly say I’ve never felt freer. As I shared on Instagram, I know this journey will have its ups and downs. I just thank God for blessing me with an incredibly supportive, loving and encouraging village – my husband, family, and close friends. I’m also extremely thankful for my attentive and knowledgeable A-Team (Alopecia Team) – Dr. Kindred (Board-Certified Dermatologistgist), Susan Peterkin (Senior Cosmetologist, Certified Hair Loss Specialist & Natural Hair Educator), and the entire Kindred Hair & Skin Center. I’m also grateful to my hairstylist, Tamara. She took my hair concerns seriously and encouraged me to see a dermatologist in the first place.

This diagnosis has given me a new perspective on my purpose, and I plan to educate myself first, then others. That said, I will be sharing my journey, and keeping you informed as much as possible. I hope this post answered some of the questions I received on social media, as well as questions you may have had while reading. I will answer more detailed questions in the near future.

A Week After “The Cut”

To everyone on social media who have sent encouraging messages, scriptures, prayers, etc. THANK YOU once again. As I said last week, I am truly humbled by the love I’ve received from my social media community. Until next time, be blessed, stay safe, and take care of yourself. Talk soon!

P.S. Happy New Year!

Personal Style | Wardrobe Refresh

September 12, 2018 by Whitney 10 Comments

Lately, I’ve been wearing more color and more outfits that are a bit out of my comfort zone. But, to my surprise, I’m thoroughly enjoying this change of pace. Granted, I still wear my black leggings and kimonos faithfully, but even then I try to add a little pizazz to my day to day “uniform”.  The pizazz can be as simple as an avant-garde piece of jewelry, or a colorful lip. As long as it gives my outfit some umph, I’m here for it!

I’m embracing change, figuring out how to make certain trends work for me, and most importantly, I’m having fun. I have a new found joy when I’m putting together outfits or shopping for new pieces. It’s quite refreshing.

I think every once in a while, everyone’s wardrobe needs to be refreshed. Granted, I’ve been known to take a minimalistic approach towards my wardrobe. I’ve written about it several times, and I still practice a lot of minimal wardrobe techniques. However, having the same wardrobe – with a few new additions here and there –  season after season can cause you to enter into a style rut. This happened to me. Again, each season I thoughtfully add new pieces. But I began to notice the bulk of my wardrobe has been the same for a very l o n g time.

Every once in a while, your wardrobe needs to be revamped and refreshed! #wnjstyle

Now, don’t take this as me telling you to purchase an entirely new wardrobe four times a year. That’s definitely not where I’m going with this. I’m just saying there’s nothing wrong with gradually refreshing your wardrobe. Being in a style rut is no fun. It’s uninspiring and can easily cause your mood and productivity to plummet. Trust me; the right clothes can do wonders for your mood AND your productivity! When I feel good about what I’m wearing I get a lot more done. I’m also more inspired to try things like a new lip color, or even a new hairstyle.

Social Media | How to Support Content Creators and Influencers

August 22, 2018 by Whitney 6 Comments

As a Content Creator, I use my platform to positively influence and uplift others by sharing bits and pieces of my daily life through social media and blogging. To some, my stats don’t make me an Influencer. The feedback and questions I get from my supporters say otherwise.

See Also: 5 Ways to Increase Your Visibility on Instagram

When you really get down to it, numbers aside, those of us Content Creators who don’t have “a lot” of followers are still Influencers. No matter the size of our following, we can still influence our audience. If you want to know how to support some of your favorite Content Creators and Influencers, check out a few easy ways to do so below!

Content Creators who don’t have “a lot” of followers can still influence their audience.

Click To Tweet

  1. Follow & Engage
    • Sounds obvious, right? You’d be surprised at how many people want to support their favorite Content Creators and Influencers, yet they don’t even follow them on social media. So, first thing’s first. Choose a social media platform (or 2) and press the follow button. Once you’ve become a follower, engage. Comment on their posts, tap the heart to show some love or share their posts with your followers. Let your favorites know you’re there!
  2. Show Up & Share
    • Planning, promoting and hosting events takes a lot of time, money and energy. So, showing up at an event hosted by your favorite Influencer is another way to show your support! If you can’t attend, sharing the event information with your followers can make a huge difference. Same goes for Content Creators. Sharing their content, that’s relevant to your audience, is one of the easiest ways to show your support.
  3. Purchase & Review
    • Purchasing a product or service is yet another great way to show support to your favorite Content Creator or Influencer. If they offer something that is of value to you, make the investment. I also suggest taking it a step further to publish an honest and thoughtful review. Trust me, it’ll be appreciated and it may encourage others to purchase the same product or service as well.

Personal Style | How to Add Color to Your Wardrobe

August 21, 2018 by Whitney 3 Comments

It’s no secret that I love wearing black. But lately, I’ve been adding more color to my wardrobe. It’s been a gradual process, but I’m enjoying it. I’ve never been opposed to color, I think I just got comfortable wearing mostly black.

See Also: How to Create a Signature Style

Black clothing is effortless when it comes to styling, and it’s such a chic and powerful color to wear. Styling colorful clothing takes more effort, for me anyway. But I’ve found a few ways to make adding color to my wardrobe both fun and practical. Check out 3 tips on how to add color to your wardrobe below!

How to Add Color to a Wardrobe

  1. Start Small
    • If you want to start adding more color to your wardrobe start small. Try adding colorful accessories, shoes or even lipstick to your wardrobe first. Get comfortable with a little color before making larger purchases like tops, bottoms, and outerwear.
  2. Pick a Season
    • Plan ahead and decide which season you’re going to start adding more color to your wardrobe. Research magazines, Pinterest, Instagram and other sources to find seasonal wardrobe inspiration. When adding color to your wardrobe by season, I suggest focusing on certain clothing items. For example, if you want to start in the fall, focus on adding a few sweaters and maybe one or two jackets. Being selective about your additions will help you avoid overspending, and it’s a great way to build around the wardrobe you already have.
  3. Have Fun
    • Incorporating color in your wardrobe should be fun! Don’t overthink the process like I did. Choose colors (and prints) that you enjoy wearing. Of course, I always suggest gathering fashion and style inspiration. However, when it comes to picking the right colors and prints for you, wear what makes you happy.

Lifestyle | 5 Quick & Easy Ways to Boost Your Mood

August 7, 2018 by Whitney 8 Comments

Throughout the month of July, my mood was like a roller coaster. My workout routine dwindled, my workload picked up a bit, and my eating habits, well, let’s skip that part for now. All those things, I’m sure, had a lot to do with my everchanging moods. Nonetheless, I tried not to let those things throw me off (too much). Instead, I began making small changes and figuring out simple ways to boost my mood. If you’re looking for quick and easy ways to boost your mood, I’ve got five that I’m sure you will find helpful!

  1. Take a Break from Social Media
    • Constantly scrolling through your Instagram and Facebook feeds can be draining. Give your brain, and your fingers, a rest. Try designating certain times to check your social media feeds, and if you’re up for it try a social media free weekend. I do them quite often. No posting, no scrolling, and no commenting. I just enjoy my surroundings and focus on engaging in activities that make me happy. If you find that you really want to share what you did on social media, snap a few pictures and post them later.
  2. Create a Playlist
    • I’ve mentioned this several times, but listening to music helps improve my mood tremendously. Creating a playlist full of your favorite songs is one of the easiest ways to boost your mood!
  3. Go for a Walk
    • I love to go for leisurely outdoor strolls and nature walks. Connecting with nature can definitely rejuvenate your mood. The perfect times (for me) to go for walks are early morning or late evening. The weather is perfect and your surroundings are usually peaceful. Hearing birds chirp in the morning or watching the sunset in the evening is the perfect way to start or end any day.
  4.  Treat Yourself (and don’t feel guilty about it)
    • I’m not one to encourage constant indulging, but every now and then it’s OK to treat yourself. Treating yourself to something as simple as an ice cream cone or a new book can do wonders for your mood! You deserve a pick-me-up every now and then.
  5. Put on Your Favorite Lipstick
    • This is new for me. I usually prefer a nice nude gloss but lately, I’m noticing that putting on a nice red lip is an instant mood booster. It makes me feel powerful and it makes me feel FEARLESS!

Lifestyle | How to Make Things Happen in Business, in Relationships & in Life in General

July 17, 2018 by Whitney 8 Comments

The older I get the more I realize that people are scared to make things happen. Whether it’s a business decision or a romantic one many people are paralyzed by either the fear of failure or the fear of success. I have been guilty of being fearful of both.

Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen. ~ Michael Jordan

However, I’ve learned that in order to be successful in life I can’t afford to be afraid of the “what if’s.” I also can’t talk about making things happen more than actually putting in the work to make them happen. Read ahead for 6 things to keep in mind while making things happen in your business, relationships, and life in general.

How to Make Things Happen

1. Commit

  • First things first. In order for a business, a relationship or a marriage to succeed you have to be all in. Half committing won’t cut it. Period. Deciding to commit is both the hardest and most important part when it comes to making things happen.
Related: How to Choose a Word of the Year

2. Don’t Over Share

  • Whether it’s a new business idea or a relationship/or marriage, you don’t need to share everything with everybody.  My advice is to find three people to share those intimate and specific details with. These people should be trustworthy, honest, and loyal. If you’re in a relationship or married, the first person in this trifecta should be easy. Your partner. When it comes to the other two, pray for discernment while seeking them out, then go with your gut.

3. Track Your Progress

  • Create a Vision Board for your business, relationship/or marriage. Place the board somewhere you can see it, and keep track of your progress and accomplishments. For example, say you have images on your board that represent purchasing office space, traveling to Europe or owning a home. Once you’ve accomplished that goal remove those images, and store them in a place you can refer back to. Eventually, you will have an empty board. An empty Vision Board equals accomplished goals.

4. Don’t be Too Hard on yourself

  • You will make mistakes. A business deal will fall through. An idea won’t work. Your relationship will hit a rough patch. You will go through difficult seasons in your marriage. It’s ok. Nothing and no one is perfect. Give yourself some grace. You’ve already made the decision to commit, so dig in your heals and push through.

5. Celebrate Your Success

  • Don’t be afraid to celebrate the good things that happen to you. The celebrations don’t have to be elaborate but then again, they can be. Afterall, you deserve it!

The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate. ~ Oprah Winfrey
