Self Care | 7 Practical Ways to Deal with Stress

February 7, 2017 by Whitney 12 Comments

Do you often feel tired before the week even begins? Have you been experiencing insomnia or having disturbing dreams at night? Suffer from frequent headaches or stomach aches? According to the American Institute of Stress, these are common signs and symptoms of stress. A few years back, I suffered from severe migraines and debilitating stomach pain on and off for about 3-4 months. After trying to ignore/or live with the pain, I made an appointment with my doctor. Within a week I was seen, tests were run and eventually I was told these symptoms were due to stress.

Related: 11 Things to You Should Do Every Day

I wasn’t surprised, at all. Back then my life was a lot less organized than it is now and I was not making self-care a priority. I knew I had to make some lifestyle changes if I wanted to be healthier, so I started trying different ways to deal with my stress. Unfortunately, stress is inevitable, but it is something that can be managed. Here are 7 practical ways to deal with stress.

Ways to Deal with Stress

1. Express Gratitude | It sounds crazy, but expressing gratitude is a great way to get your mind off of the things you’re stressing about. If you’re busy counting your blessings, you don’t have much time to think and stress over the things you don’t have or can’t change. Try it.

2. Journaling | Sometimes all you need to do is put pen to paper and write whatever it is you’re feeling. Getting that stress out of your head and on paper is truly cathartic. Journaling also forces you to unplug from the world and focus on yourself. Lastly, keeping a journal allows you to reflect and look back at your patterns. This can be helpful when trying to pinpoint the cause of your stress.

3. Social Media Detox | Social media is such a helpful and necessary tool, especially for brands, businesses, and entrepreneurs. However consuming too much social media content can become stressful. When you’re constantly bombarded with images, memes, video clips and tweets it can become overwhelming, thus causing your stress level to heighten. Taking time “off” from social media is one of the best ways to quiet the noise, de-stress and refocus. Trust me, you won’t miss much.

4. Listen to Music | Listening to music has always been my go-to whenever I’m stressed out. It’s a great escape, if only for a few moments. I actually have a “Chill Mode” playlist on iTunes, as well as Spotify. Some of the artists on the playlists include Ella Mai, Boney James, Mali Music, Kehlani and more. I also turn to one of my Spiritual playlists at times. If you’re looking for some songs to add to your playlist, check out mine below.

Looking for a smooth and relaxing playlist? Check out this one from @whitneynicjames! #wnjplaylist

5. Learn to Relax | As I mentioned earlier, I have not always made self-care a priority. I think many of us believe the act of self-care is selfish when in actuality, self-care is extremely necessary. Studies have shown that self-care actually makes you more effective and energetic. Avoiding things that make you feel good can be damaging to your self-esteem and confidence. Plus in order to take care of and be there for those importation people in our lives, we have to take care of ourselves first.

Related: 11 Ways to Have a Better Day

6. Go to Bed | Getting enough sleep is probably one of the easiest ways to help keep your stress in check. Creating a nighttime routine and setting a bedtime for yourself is a great place to start. If you have an iPhone, I suggest trying the Bedtime Feature. You can set your bedtime and wake-up time for the week, as well as during the weekends. This feature lets you know 15-minutes before bedtime that it’s time to shut down. It even tells you how many hours you’ve slept.

7. See a Counselor or Therapist | If your stress is becoming too much to handle on your own, I definitely suggest finding a counselor or therapist to talk to. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeing a counselor, therapist, or even a pastor/spiritual advisor. Sometimes we need an outside person to give a fresh perspective on what’s going on with us. I truly believe God gave certain people the knowledge and skills to help others navigate through tough times. I’ve gone to my pastor during stressful times more than once. Talking through my issues and getting sound advice on how to deal with certain situations helped tremendously. So the next time you’re feeling stressed and nothing else seems to be working, don’t be afraid to ask for help. After all, we’re not meant to do this thing called life alone.

So tell me, how do you deal with stress? Let me know!

Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Personal Style | Grey Sweater and Black Leggings

February 6, 2017 by Whitney 14 Comments

This grey sweater and black leggings look is definitely my kind of outfit! While not a fan of cold weather, I am a huge fan of cold weather attire. When I saw this cozy, cute and affordable sweater in TJMaxx a month ago, I knew it had to be mine! Frantically scouring the racks, I found the last of my size and placed it in my cart. Mission accomplished! I was so sure the sweater would fit, I didn’t even try it on. That’s very unlike me. I always like to try on items before purchasing, but in this case I went with my gut and purchased it anyway. In the end it worked out in my favor.

Grey Sweater and Black Leggings

Before this purchase, I’d been looking to add a grey sweater to my wardrobe for quite sometime. It’s not secret that I wear leggings, a lot, so over-sized sweaters and tunics have become a wardrobe staple. When wearing leggings your top should cover your bottom. I also think wearing tops that flare out a bit or have slits on the side look very flattering on my figure when styling them with leggings, or even straight leg jeans/bottoms.

Learning how to dress for your body type is key when it comes to personal style. #wnjstyle

Aside from warm and cozy sweaters, I’m also a fan of stylish winter coats. Now let me clarify; I’ll choose to wear a fly cape over a heavy, bulky coat any day! I detest being hot, so capes are usually my go-to winter outerwear choices. However when the temperatures are disrespectfully low, I can suck it up and deal with a heavy, yet stylish, winter coat. This DKNY coat was a Valentine’s Day gift from hubs 2 years ago. He was tired of me wearing only capes and “heavy cardigans” during the winter and then complaining about being cold. Nice gesture, huh?

Personal Style | Burgandy and Leopard Print

February 1, 2017 by Whitney 21 Comments

Well, hello there! It’s been a while, almost 3 months actually, since I’ve shared a Personal Style post. It’s also been a while since I’ve wanted to share a Personal Style post. Let’s just say I wasn’t feeling the whole process of getting dressed, taking pictures and blogging about my outfit while. For the past few months I’ve been living in leggings, sweaters and sneakers while hibernating in our one bedroom apartment, my office and my parents house. But please, don’t feel sorry for me…at all.

* See Also, Holiday Wishes & a Happy New Year

I thoroughly enjoyed the last few months! During my “hibernation” I made time to plan and prepare content, among other things, for the months ahead. I also spent much needed quality time with my husband, family and good friends. Catching matinee’s and finishing some really good books is also something I enjoyed during that time. But alas, it’s time to resume sharing those minimal #WNJStyle posts and re-enter my world of Whitney Nic James, the blog.

Burgundy and Leopard Print

When I think about my wardrobe last season, as well as the current one, I notice that I’ve worn a lot of burgundy and black and burgundy and leopard print. It seems to be my go-to color combo. Deciding to wear these colors together is a chic style choice; the warm tone of burgundy is perfect for the fall and winter season(s). Adding leopard print to the mix brings it all together, don’t you agree?

Adding a touch of leopard print to a burgundy and black outfit is a perfect style choice! #wnjstyle

This burgundy cardigan is one of the few pieces I’ve added to my minimal wardrobe this season. I’m still being very selective about the wardrobe items I add to my closet, but this piece was a must. It’s versatile, the color is timeless and the material incredibly warm. There have been quite a few days that I’ve worn this cardigan as a light jacket/coat, with a scarf of course. And did I mention it was on sale when I purchased it? The sales racks at Target (still) get me, everytime.

Events | 2017 Washington Auto Show

January 31, 2017 by Whitney 3 Comments

Last Thursday I attended my first event of the year, thanks to the She Buys Cars team! It felt great to be back in action, as a blogger and influencer that is. I thoroughly enjoyed my day serving as a She Buys Cars Ambassador at the Washington Auto Show. I spent hours swooning over hundreds of shiny vehicles during Industry and Media Day, courtesy of Hyundai and Genesis, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. It’s no secret that I love cars, hence the numerous #WNJDrives car reviews on the blog, so I was in my world that day!

As I walked through the show, I spotted this huge monster looking truck on the 2nd floor. Intrigued by it’s color and size, I headed over and started investigating. What kind of truck was this? Who would drive such a big car? Is this truck even allowed on the road? After a few minutes of exploring it’s interior, my questions were answered. The “huge monster looking truck” is called the ZH2 Fuel Cell Electric Army Vehicle and was developed and built by General Motors. The vehicle was built to test and evaluate the readiness of Fuel Cell propulsion – the action of driving or pushing forward – in military like environments.

Check out the next BIG thing in military vehicles, spotted at the @WashAutoShow! #WAS17

I eventually made my way to the lower level where I was able to sit in on the Hyundai Ioniq presentation. I’m a huge fan of Hyundai vehicles, but I must say that I’m was even more impressed to find out about their life-time battery warranty for electric cars. Already known for having one of the best warranty programs in America, they’ve raised the stakes even higher! Their latest electric model, the Ioniq, will actually be one of the first to have this warranty feature.

Did you know that @Hyundai offers a lifetime warranty on their electric cars? #WAS17 #HyundaiDC

From luxury to American made to minivans and sports cars, I viewed several vehicles at the Washington Auto Show. I was in awe quite a few times during the day when I had the chance to come face to face with some of my “Dream Cars”, including the Mercedes G-Class SUV. I mean who wouldn’t be a little excited to get a thorough look at his or her Dream Car?! Take a look at one of the the newest luxury cars on the market, the Genesis G90, as well as a few of the beauties I couldn’t help swoon over.

So tell me, have you ever been to an Auto Show? Also, what’s your Dream Car? Let me know!

If you’re int he DMV area, I definitely suggest visiting the Washington Auto Show. Now until February 5th, tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and kids under 6 are free! You can purchase yours HERE. As always, thanks for reading. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Holiday Wishes…& a Happy New Year!

December 25, 2016 by Whitney 3 Comments

This year has been anything but easy, but I am extremely grateful that God has allowed me to make it this far. I’m also excited to spend the holiday season with my loved ones. The holidays seem to make everything that went wrong during the year irrelevant. To know that I’m able to eat, laugh, spend time and just be with my family erases all negativity. I am truly blessed and I plan to take some time to really embrace and enjoy our moments together this season. I also plan to enjoy some me time. I’ve been on the go pretty much all year, but now it’s time to slow down and take a breather.

Auto Review | 2017 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD Review

December 14, 2016 by Whitney 4 Comments

I had the pleasure of test driving the 2017 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD last week. I’ll be the first to say that this car is definitely a head turner! From it’s sleek and sporty body to the Dynamic Blue Mica color, all eyes were on me while driving the CX-3. While smitten with its exterior, I was also impressed with the cream and black interior (with a hint of maroon). It felt very luxurious inside, to say the least.

mazda-cx-3

car-review-mazda-cx-3

It was just me driving in the car most days, so I was OK with the compact size. Although the CX-3 can fit 5 passengers, I’m not sure how 3 people can comfortably fit in the backseat. I was, however, able to fit a few of my work bags and other items comfortably in the backseat, as well as a lot of groceries in the trunk. There was even a removable bottom in the trunk that made transporting groceries even easier. So carrying around items in this car is no problem. Several people, I’m not so sure. Check out some of my pros and cons for the Mazda CX-3 features below:

Pros

  • Clean Dashboard (no distractions)
  • 60/40 Split Fold Down Rear Seat
  • Compact & Easy to Park
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Reasonable Cost
    • $28,510 (with optional features)

Cons

  • Limited Space in the Front Console
  • Hidden Cupholder in the Front
  • Small Backseat

car-review-mazda-cx-3

2017 Mazda CX-3

I travel the Maryland roads and highways quite a bit each week, so having the rear-view camera to help me park and the blind spot monitoring while traveling up and down 95 was extremely helpful! Having a smooth ride each day made driving a real treat and I even noticed that the car was very sturdy. I was able to control the steering wheel and brakes without feeling like the car was jerking me all over the place. I felt extremely safe and that’s a VERY good feeling. Here are a few more Mazda CX-3 features:

– Keyless Entry & Push Button Engine Start

– Steering Wheel with Audio Controls

– Leather with Lux Suede Sports Seats

– 7-inch Color Touchscreen Display

– Power Mirrors with Turn Lamps

– Bluetooth Handsfree Phone

– Heated Front Seats

– Rear-view Camera

– Power Moonroof

So tell me, what do you think about the 2017 Mazda CX-3? Would a car like this fit your lifestyle? Let me know!

As always, thanks for reading and until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Lifestyle | 5 Books to Read in 2017

December 13, 2016 by Whitney 2 Comments

Every year I make it known that I want to read more. Sounds good, right? Well, I’m happy to report that this year I took action and read a lot more than usual. Thanks to Audible– no, this post isn’t sponsored – I’ve been able to read several really good books this year. I’ve also gone the old school route and read through a few hardback and paperback books as well. I’ve always been a fan of reading, but this year my urge to read and research was like no other. That brings me to today’s post. I want to share a few books that I think you should add to your 2017 reading list. That said, here are 5 books to read in 2017.

Related: What I’ve Been Reading Lately

Books to Read in 2017

1. Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren | I’ve read this book twice and each time, I received something different. I plan to read through it again in 2017, but this time my husband will be joining me. If you’re looking for a better understanding of what your purpose is and you can use it to serve others, this book is for you.

2. The Power of I am, Joel Osteen | Packed with uplifting affirmations, an in depth look at some of your favorite characters in the Bible and a little humor, this audio-book has given me life for the past week! I’ll be done this book by the end of the year and I highly suggest you give it a read/listen. Joel has a way of helping you remember that you’re not only God’s gift, but you were born to do GREAT things. Simply put, everything you need to be GREAT is already inside of you – it’s up to us to activate that greatness. This book will help you do just that!

3. The Bible | I’m telling you, this is the best book ever written. It should’ve been #1 on this list, but I digress. This year, I made the decision to commit to strengthening my relationship with the Lord. Thanks to the New King James Version of the Life Application Study Bible, pictured below, I was able to really dive in and dig deep into The Word. I am still and will always be a work in progress, but to see my relationship and faith grow stronger every day is something I’m really proud of.

Books to Read in 2017

3. The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster, Darren Hardy | I think I listened to this audiobook in less than 8 days. Yea, it was that good! Written by former publisher and editor of Success Magazine, Darren Hardy candidly shares the ups and downs of his entrepreneurial journey. Throughout the book, he provides easy to digest tips on how to navigate through the crazy, scary, yet rewarding world of entrepreneurship. It’s a great audiobook to listen to while riding in the car, as well as during your lunch break. I suggest getting the hard copy of the book too. Not only can you highlight the important messages and write your own notes in the margins, but it’s also a great resource to refer back to through your journey.

4. I’m Judging You, Luvvie Ajayi | While reading through this book, I could not stop laughing and nodding my head. This collection of essays, coined the Do-Better Manual, is raw, honest and so necessary…and not to mention hilarious. It’s one of those books that makes you take a look at yourself, your friend-circle, your family, social media and the whole world in general like, “DANG! We really DO need to do better!” If you’re up for reading some humorous and witty life lessons, mixed with a bit of side-eye and harmless judgment, this book is a must read for you in 2017!

5. Rich B*tch, Nicole Lapin | I listened to this audio-book throughout the entire year. If your goal is to get your finances and credit together in the New Year, this book is worth a read. The author gives practical and straightforward advice, in small doses, on how to get your finances in order. She also clears up a lot of credit and finical myths/rumors. I found that very helpful!

So tell me, have you read any of these books? What are some books you think are worth reading in 2017? Let me know!

I can’t wait to read your suggestions! Be sure to let me know if you plan to read any of the books I suggested as well. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!
