Personal Style | 3 Reasons Why Fall Fashion Should Include Sweaters and Tunics

October 12, 2015 by Whitney 21 Comments

Happy Monday! The weather this weekend was perfect for sweaters and tunics so of course, I styled both in at least one outfit this weekend. I figured this pairing was perfect for church and afternoon errands. Fall fashion is all about sweaters and tunics. I’m a huge fan of embellished sweaters/cardigans and tunics; so much so that I pretty much wear one or both throughout the entire season! Here are 3 reasons you should include sweaters and tunics into your fall fashion wardrobe.

Fall fashion should include a plethora of sweaters and tunics! #wnjstyle

1. Affordability. Both sweaters and tunics are affordable wardrobe items, but especially sweaters/cardigans. Thrift stores have plenty to pick from and the uniqueness of each sweater/cardigan is great! Shopping for this item at your local thrift store is a great way to save a few coins, as well as add a bit of pizzazz to your personal style.

2. Wearability. When it comes to tunics, you can pretty much wear them for any and every occasion, depending on the style. Stocking up on a plethora of printed and solid tunics is a sure way to expand your wardrobe.

3. Transitional. I can’t get enough of transitional wardrobe items, which is another reason I love sweaters and tunics. You can wear either during all 4 seasons, depending on the material. If you want to stretch your wardrobe, these items are a must have.

Personal Style | Styling Leather Leggings

October 5, 2015 by Whitney 32 Comments

Today’s outfit is simple, functional and chic. Those are the main elements that make up my personal style. The leather leggings are a bit outside of my comfort zone, but I stayed true to my style aesthetic and paired them with a flowy tunic, a pair of nude pumps and minimal accessories.

Styling Leather Leggings

I wore this to church on Sunday and I’ve even figured out how to make the outfit work for my 9 to 5. Adding a pair of cute flats and a chic work tote will do the trick! If you’ve been reading for awhile you know I’m all about functional and transitional style. This is the perfect example of both.

Trendy pieces are great, as long as you can work them into your personal style aesthetic. #wnjstyle

To be quite honest, I was a bit unsure of the leggings at first. I’m not that into trendy pieces, however if I can work the trend into my wardrobe I’m good. I suggest trying trendy pieces here and there during each new season. Don’t be scared to have fun with clothes by stepping outside of your style comfort zone; your wardrobe will thank you!

Personal Style | Summer Personal Style Recap, Part II

September 8, 2015 by Whitney 22 Comments

Hey there! I hope you all had a marvelous holiday weekend. I spent most of my time organizing and cleaning up our new place, swimming, and cooking with hubs. All in all, the weekend was a great one and I’m so happy we have a short work week! Before I get into fall style, I want to take one last look at my favorite summer style outfits from the blog. I had so many I wanted to re-share so I figured a Part II post was necessary. Let’s take a look!

Summer Style Recap

Kimono // Travel Style

This summer was probably one of my favorites style-wise because I finally became 100% comfortable with my personal style. I know what colors, prints and styles work for me and I know how far I’m willing to step outside my style comfort zone. After much experimenting, donating old clothing and shopping around, I’m very comfortable with the clothes in my closet. That’s such a great feeling!

Building your personal style should be fun, precise and realistic! #wnjstyle

As I mentioned in a previous post, I now know the stores and brands are my go-to’s and for the most part, I don’t stray from those places. I’ve become very adamant about wearing clothing that’s comfortable and practical for my lifestyle. So much so that I’m in the process of creating a How-to Find Your Personal Style post and webinar for the upcoming season. Be sure to sign up for my mailing list so you can be the first to find out when that goes live!

Style | Summer Style Recap, Part I

August 31, 2015 by Whitney 32 Comments

Tomorrow is September 1st. Just typing that feels weird. I mean my goodness; the summer has come and gone like that! I do love the fall season, so I’m not complaining. However, Summer 2015 has been quite a memorable one and I’m a little sad to see it coming to a close. But I’m sure September, and the fall season, have plenty of greatness in store! Before we sashay into a new month, let’s take a look at my summer style recap.

Summer Style

Printed Pants in DC // Sheer in All Black

Shift Dress & Sunnies // Floral Tunic & Backpacks

I mentioned that I was all about being casual and chic this summer, so I gravitated towards black and white, tunic dresses and jumpsuits (one-pieces). I also play with accessories and hair; always fun to do! I knew this summer was going to be busy, so I styled lost of pants, leggings and practical shoes.  From pageants to road-trips, comfort was my #1 priority.

My summer style was casual and chic; lots of tunics, leggings and shift dresses! #wnjstyle

Always a fan of statement necklaces, I tried to style as many different ones as possible. I mean after all they sit on my dresser begging to be worn, so why not?! My summer style also included backpacks. I’m so glad I gave this trend a try because I honestly LOVE wearing them. Yes, they’re on trend and super cute, but also functional and practical for trips, weekend errands and even casual days at the office.

So tell me, what do you think about my summer style? What styles have you been wearing this summer? Let me know!

Feel free to catch up with me on Snapchat (@wnicjames) or Instagram to find out more about my weekend. Hubs and I finally moved into our new place and I’ve been snapping and sharing a few pics. Of course there will be a full update on the move later, but until then be sure to link your recent outfit to today’s Personal Style Linkup. Until next time, be blessed and stay safe…XO!

Fall Style Must Haves | Melissa McCarthy Seven7 at Nordstrom

August 25, 2015 by Whitney 4 Comments

When I first heard Melissa McCarthy was coming out with a clothing line for plus size women, I was ecstatic! I’ve been a huge fan since she played the high-strung and lovable Sookie on Gilmore Girls. Since then I’ve watched her evolve into an A-List actress. As her talent evolved, so did her style. She knows what styles fit her body and she knows what works well on her body type. Someone on my Twitter feed said it perfectly – “…her line is perfectly designed for curvy girls.“ Here’s a look at a few of my favorite items from the new Melissa McCarthy Seven7 line, available at Nordstrom (and HSN).

For a few extra coins I don’t mind because I know the garments will last. Also the items available are great transitional wardrobe pieces, meaning you can wear the item more than once. You know how I feel about stretching and expanding your closet – #WINNING!

Style | The Perfect Lounging Outfit

August 24, 2015 by Whitney 40 Comments

This weekend was a bit hectic because hubs and I are in the process of packing to move to our new place next Saturday. While packing can be very overwhelming, I was thankful my family came over to lend a hand. Because of their help, I know the rest of the process this week will be a breeze! With all the packing and whatnot I really needed a brief change of scenery. Thankfully, hubs was able to whisk me off to The Mayflower Hotel in D.C. for a relaxing overnight stay, which happens to be my post-birthday treat. I was thrilled; anytime I can throw on a lounging outfit and relax for a bit, I’m down!

I made sure I packed my favorite lounge item when I found out we were headed to D.C. This thrifted moo-moo is a staple lounging outfit. If I don’t thrift them I head to Marshall’s, TJMaxx or Ross; their prices and selections are always on point (starting at $9.99). Wearing this makes me feel like I stepped back to the 60’s or 70’s. I love those eras style wise so anytime I can channel that through an outfit, I’m a happy girl!

The perfect outfit for lounging and relaxing during the weekend. #wnjstyle

I like to wear garments like this because to be quite honest, it makes me feel FABULOUS. Wearing something flowy, pretty and feminine just while lounging always makes me feel good. Just because you’re in the house (or relaxing at a hotel) doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look and feel fabulous. Plus, your husband or significant other will appreciate it. I learned that from my Mom. 😉

Personal Style | Casual Wear Outfit from Nordstrom Rack

August 19, 2015 by Whitney 2 Comments

I’ve mentioned before that this summer has been quite the #CasualSummer as far as style. Sure, I can dress up with the best of them when necessary, but on most days you can catch me in a comfy and cute casual wear outfit like this one. I won’t bore you about how important I think it is to be comfortable and fashion-forward when dressing. I think by now, you get how important that is to me, LOL. However, I will say that casual wear is more than just leggings and denim. These pants are the perfect example!

The pants in today’s outfit are made of sweatpants material; so perfect for casual wear! The pants are also straight leg which makes them chic, not frumpy. Adding a pair of sparkly flats and a fun top gives the outfit personality without being too over the top.

All of these style elements make this OOTD a contender for perfect casual wear options. I can easily pair the pants with another top and I can do the same with the top. Just another example of how re-styling items saves money and expands your wardrobe.

Personal Style | Blue and White Calvin Klein Jumpsuit

August 18, 2015 by Whitney 20 Comments

For months I’ve been all about jumpsuits. They’re comfortable, chic and fashion-forward. Also whatever the occasion, a jumpsuit is the perfect garment. I’ve worn this jumpsuit to a fancy party and a corporate function. I actually have an event this weekend to attend and guess what? I plan to wear this jumpsuit! No surprise there, huh?

Plus Size Jumpsuit

I purchased this jumpsuit at a Macy’s event a few months back. I was skeptical about the purchase because of the print. I was unsure if the print would flatter me, but when I tried it on I was sold! I walked around the fitting room for a while, just to make sure it was comfortable. I also sat down in the garment; you always have to do the sit test, right?! I figured the jumpsuit could be worn for several occasions and styled with heels or sandals. After leaving the dressing room, I had 3 separate occasions in mind to wear the jumpsuit. Clearly, this purchase was more than validated.

Jumpsuits are the perfect wardrobe addition; they can be styled all season! #wnjstyle
